uropean furniture and decorative arts is defined by its collectors. For centuries, they have gathered objects as diverse as early tapestries, export porcelains, neoclassical furniture, silver, and objets de vertu creating personal environments that reflect their times and taste. In this sale, we are fortunate to have core objects that are excellent examples of this tradition. Early works of art from the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art open the sale, leading us to fine examples with important provenances both in Europe and in the United States. Highlights of the sale include The Hamilton Palace Table, commissioned by the 10th Duke of Hamilton for a now-lost Renaissance pietra dura top. The table was sold in the famed 1882 sale of the collections of Hamilton Palace, and found its way to the Gilded Age splendor of Belcourt Castle in Newport, Rhode Island. This dramatic baroque style giltwood table is a bold example of bravura carving and gilding. In contrast, French taste is represented by the restrained elegance of a suite of Restauration bois clair furniture from the Chateau de Monteul that joined the legendary collection of James McIlhenny on Sincerely,

Rittenhouse Square. Other examples from this suite are in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Always a favorite of collectors, Grand Tour objects are represented in this sale by an important set of cameo casts after the antique by Paoletti — the largest group ever to come to auction. Silver forms a stand-alone sale, presenting a range of important pieces. The sale features a unique gold-inlaid silver tea and coffee service by Tiffany & Co. The service, executed in an unusual fusion of Arts & Crafts and Art Deco, was a special commission presented to philanthropist W. Alton Jones that has descended in the family to the present owner. As a Depression-era investor in Tiffany & Co., it is likely that this service was given to Jones as a gift for his contribution to the company. Another exotic piece is a silver gilt kovsh by Faberge in a Slavic moderne style, with a handle in the form of a Firebird holding a pendant jewel in its beak. We trust that a new generation of collectors will be drawn to the exuberant diversity of European decorative arts.

Best/London” terminating in a fifth gold flame finial; the whole raised on four rocaille legs and feet. H: 7, W: 3 7/8, D: 2 1/4 in. provenance: Jointly owned by Ann Blyth Barnes Steere, Elizabeth Barnes Halsted, and Judith Barnes Luke. Nancy Rintoul Barnes. By descent in the family. Acquired by Angus Jacob Rintoul purportedly from the Chinese Imperial family, circa 1810. note: The history of this necessaire begins in China, where it was purportedly acquired by Angus Jacob “Jake” Rintoul (1783-1840) from the Chinese Imperial family in the first quarter of the 19th century. Born in Glasgow,
Rintoul moved to Edinburgh at the age of 15 to apprentice as a ship chandler. At 17, he is recorded as third officer on a merchant ship engaged in trade with the Orient, and by his early 20s he had risen to first officer, having developed a swashbuckling reputation battling pirates in the Far East. Family records indicate that he traveled to Canton (now Guangzhou) and became acquainted with the Imperial family, who were residing in the area during a heavy monsoon season and for whom he reportedly negotiated trade and protection agreements against pirates in the South China Sea. Nevertheless, the palace was marauded and family record goes on to state that “it is uncertain whether the ladies companion was obtained by Jake as a result of pursuing the looting pirates or whether it was given as a token of gratitude by the Imperial family for services rendered.” How the necessaire arrived in China is equally unclear-whether part of commercial trade or looted from a British settlement-but it has been suggested that it was given to an Imperial princess, probably Gurun Princess Hexiao (1775-1823), for her twelfth birthday. Having survived the looting of the palace, Rintoul returned to Europe, pursuing less adventurous mercantile business for the family’s whiskey trade. He disappeared in 1840 on a trip to Antwerp, and the necessaire has remained in the family by descent from his two children. The form of this necessaire bears notable similarities to examples by James Cox (1723-1800), particularly the upper portion of an exceptional musical and automaton table clock with necessaire, sold Christie’s London, June 7, 2007, Lot 125. Another similar example was sold Christie’s New York, April 19, 2002, Lot 51. $8,000-12,000 See also illustration on inside front cover.

note: This extraordinary collection of twenty-four of Paoletti’s intaglios represents the largest single collection ever brought to market at auction. For a recent sale of twelve volumes, see Bonham’s New York, March 4, 2015, Lot 1283. Before the advent of photography, Grand Tour souvenirs were among the most widely collected of travel mementos. A number of artists and sculptors capitalized on this craze, in particular the Italian Bartolomeo Paoletti (1757-1834) and his son,
Pietro. A trained frescoist, Pietro was extremely capable with plaster and, in addition to the many exquisite frescoes he installed in churches across Italy, he is best known today for his work making intaglios, plaster casts of engraved cameos, sculptures, architectural monuments, and antiquities. The evident skill and intricacy of his work won Paoletti patronage by Europe’s royalty and, especially, the British elite. Referenced in Count Hawks Le Grice’s travelogue, Walks through the Studii of the Sculptors at
Rome (1841), the Count describes the intaglios as such: “Although the Impronte are but miniature copies, they exhibit all the fidelity and beauty of the originals, and convey to the eye a better idea of sculptured works of art than the most finished engravings. The Studio of Paoletti is in Piazza di Spagna No. 49, where collections in impronte may be had of all the works existing in the different Museums in Europe.” $20,000-30,000

note: Brothers John (1754-1835) and William Cary (1759-1825) established themselves in London as globe manufacturers at the end of the 18th century, producing their first examples in 1791. With John’s training in map engraving and William’s specialty in nautical instruments, the brothers turned to cartography, creating highly accurate globes from new map plates of their own design. Their globes have long been regarded among the finest produced in England during the Georgian and Regency periods of exploration. John’s sons, George (1788-1859) and John, Jr. (1791-1852), joined the firm in 1820 and the workshop was moved from its original home at 181 The Strand to a larger studio at 86 St. James’s Street. The present pair of globes was designed in 1816, the last to be made with maps exclusively by John, Sr. and William, and produced in 1826 after the design was updated to reflect recent cartographical discoveries. After the 1820s, the firm was taken over by John, Jr. and George, continuing to operate as J. & G. Cary until 1850. Antoinette, for whom he fulfilled a large number of commissions for the Tuileries, Versailles, Saint-Cloud and Fontainebleau from 1785-1791. Other furniture designed by Jacob for the Palais des Tuileries, and bearing the same stamps as the present example, are in various museum collections, including a carved beechwood chair, circa 1785, in the Brooklyn Museum (68.202.3). The present marks, including three fleur-de-lys and a crown accompanied by “TH”, indicate that this fauteuil was likely accounted for in the inventories of the Tuileries made during the 19th century after the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy. Some pieces are also marked with inventory numbers related to their original commission; many, including the current example, are not, rendering it difficult to determine the exact date of commission or the room for which it was originally commissioned. $2,000-3,000

THE FRÈRES MONTGOLFIER AND ROBERT The frères Montgolfier, JosephMichel (1740-1810) and JacquesÉtienne (1745- 1799), were among the earliest of French aviators and are credited with the invention of the world’s first globe aerostatique, or hot air balloon. From a prosperous family of paper manufacturers in Annonay, southeastern France, the brothers demonstrated ingenuity from an early age. By 1782 they were experimenting with techniques involving small chambers heated by burning paper, and tested their first balloon form in late 1782. On June 4, 1783, they made their first public demonstration in
Annonay using a balloon of cloth and paper, which was executed with great success. Later that year Étienne became the world’s first aeronaut, lifting off on October 15, 1783. In January 1784, after several further successes, a large demonstration was planned for Lyon. On January 19, in front of a crowd of 100,000 people, Joseph took flight for the first time, accompanied by several French nobles. Sadly the flight was doomed, ending dramatically with the balloon in flames, but fortunately none of the passengers was hurt. At the same time, two younger
brothers, the frères Robert, AnneJean (1758-1820) and Nicolas-Louis (1760-1820), were also experimenting with early aviation techniques. The frères Robert were trained engineers from Paris working together with a professor named Jacques Charles, who was the first to propose a hydrogen balloon model. They launched their first manned hydrogen balloon flight in Paris on December 1, 1783. They next began experimenting with a dirigible form, which they hoped to steer with rudder and oars. Their dirigible had its first trip on July 15, 1784, traveling from Saint-Cloud to
Meudon, and its second on September 19, 1784 from Paris to Beuvry. Though the steering mechanisms ultimately proved useless, this second attempt was the first long-distance flight over 100 kilometers. This collection of four layered reverse-painted glass panels depict these early advances in flight. Like a diorama or stage set, they rely on flat layers to enhance the illusion of depth so essential to creating an image of altitude and distance. An early form of illustration, this technique was used by both Roman and medieval artists before flourishing in the early 19th century, when the present two lots were painted.

The living room of Mr. McIlhenny’s Rittenhouse Square home, published in House and Garden magazine. The present sofa is illustrated, as well as the crest of one fauteuil behind, along with the original firescreen and two portraits by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, all now in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
This exquisite salon suite, comprising a settee and two fauteuils, was originally part of a larger assembled suite purchased by the renowed Philadelphia collector and curator, Henry P. McIlhenny, from Jean Chélo, Paris, in the early 1950s to furnish his recently purchased and redesigned residence in Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia. At that time, Mr. McIlhenny acquired two settees, five fauteuils, and a firescreen, among other pieces, which were illustrated together in situ in House and Garden magazine in 1986. Following Mr. McIlhenny’s death, the present settee and fauteuils were sold in Christie’s May 20 and 21, 1987 sale of Property from the Collection of Henry P. McIlhenny, Lots 84 and
85, respectively. The remaining settee, three fauteuils, and firescreen were donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where Mr. McIlhenny had served for fifty years, first as Curator of Decorative Arts and later as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. These pieces are illustrated in the Museum’s 1987 catalogue, The Henry P. McIlhenny Collection: An Illustrated History, by Joseph Rishell. The fauteuils were produced by the notable ébéniste Jean-Jacques Werner (1791-1849) at his Rue de Grenelle workshop in St. Germain, Paris, where he was located from 1819-1828. One of the original suite of five is illustrated in D. Ledoux-Lebard’s Les Ébénists Parisiens 1795-1870 (1965), plate CXXIV. In addition, a very similar
example is illustrated in Mobilier Restauration (1976), Chantal Bizot, page 34. The settee is attributed to Joseph-Pierre-François Jeanselme (d. 1860), whose firm was established in 1824 at 7 rue des Deux-Portes, Paris. This settee hails from a larger suite that was commissioned by the Château de Montuel in Eure, Normandy, France. Part of this suite remains in residence at the Château and those examples bear Jeanselme’s labels. These lots are accompanied by a similar and associated Charles X inlaid bois clair firescreen purchased by the present owner, offered as lot 248 on page 69.

297 152401/1 Chinese export porcelain armorial platter for the Swedish market circa 1750 Oval with a finely moulded scalloped rim, painted to the well with a pseudo-heraldic crane of the Grill family. W: 17 1/2, D: 14 1/4 in. note: This platter hails from one of 13 sets of export porcelain commissioned in the mid18th century by Stockholm’s merchant-elite Grill family, historically one of Sweden’s foremost collectors of export porcelain. The present platter was part of a 68-piece set commissioned by Jean Abraham Grill (1732-1792) following his tenure at the Swedish East India Company’s Canton factory in the 1750s. It was likely manufactured in the early 1760s: the notable scalloped edges of this form were particularly fashionable in Sweden during
this period. The platter bears a unique and original decorative pattern of geometric, foliate, and scrollwork designs, centered by a pseudo-heraldic image of a crane, alluding to the the Grill family armorial of a crane holding a grillo, or grasshopper, facing the dexter rather than sinister side. A nearly identical but smaller platter from the same set, held in the Bloomfield Moore Collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, was loaned to the China House Gallery for its exhibition, ‘China Trade Porcelain’, 1973-74, and is published in the exhibition catalogue of the same name. This set of porcelain is also discussed in Jochem Kroes’ article, ‘The Grill Family from Sweden and the Netherlands and their Chinese Armorial Services’ (2012). $3,000-5,000

With its flowing lines and vaguely mythological subject, Danse Sacrée, or Sacred Dance, is emblematic of both Segoffin’s modern style as well as that of the Art Nouveau movement, with which he is closely associated. A larger version of this important sculpture, in marble, can be found in the collection of the Musée d’Orsay, Paris. $10,000-15,000

H: 10 1/4, W: 18, D: 11 1/4 in. note: Evgeny Aleksandrovich Lansere (also called Lanceray) was born August 24, 1848, in Morshansk and died April 4, 1886, at Neskuchne, Kharkiv Province, Ukraine. As a sculptor, Lansere was known primarily for his Russian and
ethnographic genre studies, as well as animalier. The son of state councilor Ludwig Paul (Aleksandr) Lansere (1815-1869), Lansere grew up in a privileged noble family, entering the local gymnasium where it was noted at a young age that he was already a talented renderer of horses. In 1861 he moved to Saint Petersburg with his family, where he completed his education. In 1867 and 1876 he traveled to Paris, where he studied sculpture as well as the methodology of bronze casting. Following his first stint in Paris he returned to Russia in 1868, when the original of the present lot was sculpted. In 1872 he received the
title of Artist First Class from the Imperial Academy of Arts and 1874 he was recognized as an Academician; from 1879 he was also a member of the Moscow Society of Fine Arts. Lansere began his public career executing private commissions as unique casts, but the popularity of his work convinced Lansere to sell the license to cast his works to the Chopin, Sazikov, and Grachev foundries. These makers began replicating his work and creating the large numbers of casts we see today of varying quality. This bronze is stamped with Sokolov foundry marks. The A. N. Sokolov Foundry was founded in 1856 and
quickly became one of the foremost foundries in Moscow, executing casts for N. Lieberich. Known for working closely with sculptors, Sokolov owned and cast the very first of Lansere’s “Troika” groups in 1869, and was noted for his high quality casts. Unfortunately, Sokolov was unable to compete with the larger Woerffel and Chopin foundries in Saint Petersburg in the 1880s, and was forced to closed his foundry. $10,000-15,000 END OF SALE

Terms & Conditions All property offered and sold (“property”) through Samuel T. Freeman & Co, (“Freeman’s”) shall be offered and sold on the terms and conditions set forth below which constitutes the complete statement of the terms and conditions on which all property is offered for sale. By bidding at the auction, whether present in person or by agent, by written bid, telephone, internet or other means, the buyer agrees to be bound by these terms and conditions.
1 Unless otherwise indicated, all Property will be offered by Freeman’s as agent for the Consignor. 2 Freeman’s reserves the right to vary the terms of sale and any such variance shall become part of these Conditions of Sale. 3 Buyer acknowledges that it had the right to make a full inspection of all Property prior to sale to determine the condition, size, repair or restoration of any Property. Therefore, all property is sold “ASIS”. Freeman’s is acting solely as an auction broker, and unless otherwise stated, does not own the Property offered for sale and has made no independent investigation of the Property. Freeman’s makes no warranty of title, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, or any other warranty or representation regarding the description, genuineness, attribution, provenance or condition to the Property of any kind or nature with respect to the Property. 4 Freeman’s in its sole and exclusive discretion, reserves the right to withdraw any property, at any time, before the fall of the hammer. 5 Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer at the time of sale, all bids are per lot as numbered in the printed catalogue. Freeman’s reserves the right to determine any and all matters regarding the order, precedence or appropriate increment of bids or the constitution of lots. 6 The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the buyer. The auctioneer has the right to reject any bid, to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion and in the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have the sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re- offer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after sale, the Freeman’s sale record shall be conclusive in all respects. 7 If the auctioneer determines that any opening or later bid or any advance bid is not commensurate with the value of the Property offered, he may reject the same and withdraw the Property from sale.
8 Upon the fall of the hammer, title to any offered lot or article will immediately pass to the highest bidder as determined in the exclusive discretion of the auctioneer, subject to compliance by the buyer with these Conditions of Sale. Buyer thereupon assumes full risk and responsibility of the property sold, agrees to sign any requested confirmation of purchase, and agrees to pay the full price, plus Buyer’s Premium, therefore or such part, upon such terms as Freeman’s may require. 9 No lot may be removed from Freeman’s premises until the buyer has paid in full the purchase price therefor including Buyer’s Premium or has satisfied such terms that Freeman’s, in its sole discretion, shall require. Subject to the foregoing, all Property shall be paid for and removed by the buyer at his/her expense within ten (10) days of sale and, if not so removed, may be sold by Freeman’s, or sent by Freeman’s to a public warehouse, at the sole risk and charge of the buyer(s), and Freeman’s may prohibit the buyer from participating, directly or indirectly, as a bidder or buyer in any future sale or sales. In addition to other remedies available to Freeman’s by law, Freeman’s reserves the right to impose a late charge of 1.5% per month of the total purchase price on any balance remaining ten (10) days after the day of sale. If Property is not removed by the buyer within ten (10) days, a handling charge of 1% of the total purchase price per month from the tenth day after the sale until removal by the buyer shall be payable to Freeman’s by the buyer; Freeman’s shall charge 1.5% of the total purchase price per month for any property not so removed within 60 days after the sale. Freeman’s will not be responsible for any loss, damage, theft, or otherwise responsible for any goods left in Freeman’s possession after ten (10) days. If the foregoing conditions or any applicable provisions of law are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to Freeman’s and the Consignor (including without limitation the right to hold the buyer(s) liable for the bid price) Freeman’s, at its option, may either cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the buyer(s), or resell the property. In such event, the buyer(s) shall remain liable for any deficiency
in the original purchase price and will also be responsible for all costs, including warehousing, the expense of the ultimate sale, and Freeman’s commission at its regular rates together with all related and incidental charges, including legal fees. Payment is a precondition to removal. Payment shall be by cash, certified check or similar bank draft, or any other method approved by Freeman’s. Checks will not be deemed to constitute payment until cleared. Any exceptions must be made upon Freeman’s written approval of credit prior to sale. In addition, a defaulting buyer will be deemed to have granted and assigned to Freeman’s, a continuing security interest of first priority in any property or money of, or owing to such buyer in Freeman’s possession, and Freeman’s may retain and apply such property or money as collateral security for the obligations due to Freeman’s. Freeman’s shall have all of the rights accorded a secured party under the Pennsylvania Uniform Commercial Code. 10 Unless the sale is advertised and announced as “without reserve”, each lot is offered subject to a reserve and Freeman’s may implement such reserves by bidding through its representatives on behalf of the Consignors. In certain instances, the Consignor may pay less than the standard commission rate where Freeman’s or its representative is a successful bidder on behalf of the Consignor. Where the Consignor is indebted to Freeman’s, Freeman’s may have an interest in the offered lots and the proceeds therefrom, other than the broker’s Commissions, and all sales are subject to any such interest. 11 No “buy” bids shall be accepted at any time for any purpose. 12 Any pre-sale bids must be submitted in writing to Freeman’s prior to commencement of the offer of the first lot of any sale. Freeman’s copy of any such bid shall conclusively be deemed to be the sole evidence of same, and while Freeman’s accepts these bids for the convenience of bidders not present at the auction, Freeman’s shall not be responsible for the failure to execute, or, to execute properly, any pre-sale bid.
13 A Buyer’s Premium will be added to the successful bid price and is payable by the buyer as part of the total purchase price. The Buyer’s Premium shall be: 25% on the first $200,000 of the hammer price of each lot, 20% on the portion from $200,001 through $3,000,000, and 12% thereafter. 14 Unless exempted by law from the payment thereof, the buyer will be required to pay any and all federal excise tax and any state and/or local sales taxes, including where deliveries are to be made outside the state where a sale is conducted, which may be subject to a corresponding or compensating tax in another state. 15 Freeman’s may, as a service to buyer, arrange to have purchased property posted and shipped at the buyer’s expense. Freeman’s is not responsible for any acts or omissions in packing or shipping of purchased lots whether or not such carrier is recommended by Freeman’s. Packing and handling of purchased lots is at the responsibility of the buyer and is at the entire risk of the buyer. 16 In no event shall any liability of Freeman’s to the buyer exceed the purchase price actually paid. 17 No claimed modification or amendment of this Agreement on the part of any party shall be deemed extant, enforceable or provable unless it is in writing that has been signed by the parties to this Agreement. No course of dealing and no delay or omission on the part of Freeman’s in exercising any right under this Agreement shall operate as a waiver of such right or any other right and waiver on any one or more occasions shall not be construed as a bar to or waiver of any right or remedy of Freeman’s on any future occasion. 18 These Conditions of Sale and the buyer’s, the Consignor’s and Freeman’s rights under these Conditions of Sale shall be governed by, construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Consignor and Buyer agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. v2.2016
