L
illian Louise Glenn, nee Lillian Louise McClaine was born on June 7, 1928 to Jim and Florence McClaine. She was nick named “Peaches” because she was so sweet. The family lived a charmed life in South Philadelphia and ran the highly successful McClaine Florist Shop, which was established in 1876. Peaches was both gregarious and sharp of mind. Peaches spent her summers in Ocean City, New Jersey and met her future husband, a charming and dashing lifeguard, George Parnell Glenn, Jr., who went on to become a successful orthopedic surgeon. The couple settled in Vineland and had two sons, George, III, affectionately known as Gidge and James. She had a discerning eye and acquired artwork, clothing and jewels to showcase her beauty and sense of whimsy. Peaches traveled extensively with her family; Fiji, Tonga, Europe, St. Barths and South Africa being just a few destinations. During these trips, she acquired an appreciation of the cultures and started acquiring jewels and jewelry. She wore her jewels as a celebration of her life, family, and friendships.

T
here is no wristwatch more legendary among watch collectors than the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona “Paul Newman.” The fascination for this chronograph (a stopwatch combined with a display watch) has increased continually in the last three decades. It gained its nickname through the actor Paul Newman who was photographed wearing it in the movie Winning, as well as in his private life. How did this watch reach iconic status, and why is it recognized today as the most coveted of sport watches? The years of economic prosperity following World War II changed the focus of Swiss watch companies. After making watches for soldiers, manufacturers needed to adapt their designs to a new generation of customers who were more active than their parents and had more time for leisure activities. Watches were developed specifically for the newly fashionable pursuits of adventurous jetsetters— some were designed for water activities such as diving, and others around the quest for speed such as car racing. Different activities required different functions from a watch. Since a racing driver may need to time a lap on a racing track, the chronograph function was specifically incorporated into watches sold to these enthusiasts. Although Omega was one of the pioneering manufacturers of the chronograph wristwatch, Rolex also had a long heritage of making them, having introduced their Cosmograph in 1963. Along with the regular dial, Rolex offered the option of an exotic dial as well. This dial had a different outer second track and the subsidiary dials featured square markers with a deco-style font for the numerals. It is this specific and exotic dial option which became known as the “Paul Newman” Daytona. Not only was the acclaimed Hollywood star viewed wearing the watch by millions of his movie fans, he also had a strong personal association with the timepiece. His beloved wife, Joanne Woodward, gifted the watch to Newman in the 1960s and he was often photographed wearing it, most notably when pursing his private passion for racing. Despite the charismatic support of one of the biggest movie stars of the time, the watch did not have a smooth path to iconic status. In the 1960s and 1970s the chronograph was a limited success for Rolex. As a manual-wind watch with limited water resistance, it was a struggle to market
81
a brand best known for its watches being impervious to water and self-winding. The watch was dismissed as “unfashionable” because of its multi-colored dial and exotic design and less successful than the regular model. Inevitably, these factors meant that Rolex strictly limited the production during that time and today these watches are extremely rare. During this same period, Rolex released a small batch of gold Cosmograph Daytona watches and among these were a very small number of exotic dials known as “Paul Newmans.” In ten years of production, the number of Rolex Cosmograph watches made with a “Paul Newman” dial is estimated to be less than 10,000, but only approximately 300 were made in gold. The watch illustrated has the rarest combination among gold “Paul Newmans.” It is fitted with a black dial and black bezel which is a very elegant contrast to the gold case and subdials, giving it a dressier look. The use of a precious metal transformed the watch from a mere “tool watch” to a status symbol. In today’s discerning market, the gold exotic dial of the “Paul Newman” Daytona has more than stood the test of time. Its glamor and rarity means it commands a much higher premiumamong collectors. Currently, a modern version of the Daytona is still being sold by Rolex, and it is now one of the brand’s most popular offerings. To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the model in 2013, Rolex introduced one in platinum. This year, they updated the stainless steel model with a ceramic bezel, presenting this icon to another generation of appreciative collectors. In the 1960s, Omega’s Speedmaster watch— introduced in 1957 specifically for the racing market, an immediate success, and subsequently included by NASA in their space program—became known as the “astronaut watch.” However, today the Rolex Daytona “Paul Newman” is one of the most valued wristwatches among cognoscenti—its appeal and collectability are universal and enduring. Freeman’swill offer a fine example, with a noteworthy singleowner provenance since it was crafted in 1969, at its upcoming fall auction. Who would have guessed that this utilitarian watch, once sidelined as a commercial error, but championed by a legendary Oscar-winning actor, would achieve such stardom of its own?

Special Notice to Prospective Jewelry Bidders Prospective jewelry bidders should exercise caution. Diamonds and gemstones commonly undergo various type of treatments, including but not limited to: heat treatment, irradiation, oiling, bleaching and/or dyeing, resin and/or polymer impregnation, diffusion, fracture filling, laser drilling, high temperature high pressure (a.k.a. HTHP) and coating with wax or other compounds. These represent some of the treatments which are common in the industry and are generally considered acceptable. While Freeman’s endeavors to disclose the most noteworthy of these, many treatments are not listed in the catalog as many gemstones are regularly treated with one or more of these treatment or enhancements. Therefore we would like to remind all prospective buyers that unless otherwise noted in the catalog, the buyer should assume that one or more of these treatments is present in the described gem material and may or may not be permanent or detectable. When Freeman’s has obtained additional information from a reputable, recognized laboratory or external source, we will commonly include the findings in our catalog description as additional information to prospective buyers. Various laboratories exist for these types of reports and findings may or may not be in agreeance with each other. Therefore, Freeman’s makes no guarantees as to the accuracy or consistency of these reports and/or findings, but rather we provide this information to our clients in order to assist them in making determinations for bidding purposes.
Special Notice to Perspective Watch and Clock Bidders Prospective watch and timepiece bidders should exercise caution. While Freeman’s offers a short description of the piece, the catalog notes and condition reports are not intended to be a complete analysis of the condition of any watch or timepiece. All watches and timepieces offered at auction are often of age and have received much wear during their lifetime. All watches and timepieces are to be sold in ‘as is’ condition and we encourage bidders to evaluate the piece in person prior to bidding.

In addition, a defaulting buyer will be deemed to have granted and assigned to Freeman’s, a continuing security interest of first priority in any property or money of, or owing to such buyer in Freeman’s possession, and Freeman’s may retain and apply such property or money as collateral security for the obligations due to Freeman’s. Freeman’s shall have all of the rights accorded a secured party under the Pennsylvania Uniform Commercial Code. 10 Unless the sale is advertised and announced as “without reserve”, each lot is offered subject to a reserve and Freeman’s may implement such reserves by bidding through its representatives on behalf of the Consignors. In certain instances, the Consignor may pay less than the standard commission rate where Freeman’s or its representative is a successful bidder on behalf of the Consignor. Where the Consignor is indebted to Freeman’s, Freeman’s may have an interest in the offered lots and the proceeds therefrom, other than the broker’s Commissions, and all sales are subject to any such interest. 11 No “buy” bids shall be accepted at any time for any purpose. 12 Any pre-sale bids must be submitted in writing to Freeman’s prior to commencement of the offer of the first lot of any sale. Freeman’s copy of any such bid shall conclusively be deemed to be the sole evidence of same, and while Freeman’s accepts these bids for the convenience of bidders not present at the auction, Freeman’s shall not be responsible for the failure to execute, or, to execute properly, any pre-sale bid. 13 A Buyer’s Premium will be added to the successful bid price and is payable by the buyer as part of the total purchase price. The Buyer’s Premium shall be: 25% on the first $200,000 of the hammer price of each lot, 20% on the portion from $200,001 through $3,000,000, and 12% thereafter. 14 Unless exempted by law from the payment thereof, the buyer will be required to pay any and all federal excise tax and any state and/or local sales taxes, including where deliveries are to be made outside the state where a sale is conducted, which may be subject to a corresponding or compensating tax in another state. 15 Freeman’s may, as a service to buyer, arrange to have purchased property posted and shipped at the buyer’s expense. Freeman’s is not responsible for any acts or omissions in packing or shipping of purchased lots whether or not such carrier is recommended by Freeman’s. Packing and handling of purchased lots is at the responsibility of the buyer and is at the entire risk of the buyer. 16 In no event shall any liability of Freeman’s to the buyer exceed the purchase price actually paid. 17 No claimed modification or amendment of this Agreement on the part of any party shall be deemed extant, enforceable or provable unless it is in writing that has been signed by the parties to this Agreement. No course of dealing and no delay or omission on the part of Freeman’s in exercising any right under this Agreement shall operate as a waiver of such right or any other right and waiver on any one or more occasions shall not be construed as a bar to or waiver of any right or remedy of Freeman’s on any future occasion. 18 These Conditions of Sale and the buyer’s, the Consignor’s and Freeman’s rights under these Conditions of Sale shall be governed by, construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Consignor and Buyer agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Shipping and Packing Responsibility for packing, shipping and insurance shall be exclusively that of the purchaser. Upon request, Freeman’s will provide the purchaser with names of professional packers and shippers known to us. Endangered Species Lots marked * are manufactured in whole or in part of restricted materials that may include tortoiseshell, ivory, mother-of-pearl, coral, rhinoceros horn, whalebone or marine ivory. Such materials may require specific licenses, certificates, or CITES documentation for import, export, moving between states in the U.S., or resale. Obtaining these documents may require scientific, laboratory or other expert analysis, in order to establish which species or genus the material came from. Freeman’s is unable to provide this information, and the obligation is on the purchaser of a lot containing any of these materials to ensure that they are able to obtain all the necessary or required documents should they need to, prior to bidding on the lot. If proper documentation or licenses etc. cannot be obtained for a purchased lot, the purchaser will still be required to make an on time payment for the lot as per our standard terms and conditions. Freeman’s cataloguing of the lots marked with this symbol * represents the best of our opinion, and the absence of this symbol from any lot description does not form a warranty that the lot will be free from any licensing or certification restrictions.
In writing Bid forms are available in the sale room and at the back of the catalogue. These should be submitted in person, by mail or by fax no later than one hour prior to the scheduled start of the sale. The auctioneer will bid on your behalf up to the limit.
