FURNISHINGS FROM HISTORIC LEMON HILL MANSION, FAIRMOUNT PARK, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA LOTS 1-91

L

emon Hill mansion has elegantly stood on a spectacular bluff above the Schuylkill River for more than 200 years, affording its visitors with unrivalled views of the river below and the city beyond. Today, the mansion’s extraordinary double-hung windows frame Philadelphia’s most iconic sites: Boat House Row, the Fairmount Waterworks, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. During its extensive and impressive history, the renowned mansion has functioned as an idyllic country villa, ice cream parlor, beer garden, the private residence of Fiske Kimball—the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s first director (1926-1955)— and presently, a historic house. Philadelphia merchant and horticulturalist, Henry Pratt (1761-1838) built Lemon Hill mansion as a fashionable riverside retreat with extensive gardens and green houses on grounds once owned by Robert Morris (1734-1806). Pratt’s 1799 design incorporated the latest in Neoclassical architectural forms and captured the optimism and energy of the Federal era in Philadelphia. At that time, Philadelphia was the commercial, cultural and political center of the new nation, serving as its Capitol until 1800. As the vibrant “Athens of the Western world,” Philadelphia was America’s most cosmopolitan city and both Pratt and Lemon Hill embodied the sense of style so important to that vigorous era. The mansion was the first property purchased by the city of Philadelphia to become part of Fairmount Park in 1855. The Colonial Dames of America, Chapter II took charge of the daily operations and maintenance of Lemon Hill in 1957, transforming it into a most believable historic house. They restored the mansion to the splendorous riverside villa Pratt envisioned it to be, recreating for its visitors the sense of escape enjoyed formerly by the 19th century gentry. The Dames selected a group of highly appropriate and sophisticated Federal and Classical period furniture, decorative arts and paintings to furnish the mansion. Though incorporating items from outside the city, the core of the Lemon Hill collection is either Philadelphia-made or has strong Philadelphia provenance. Many objects have historic ties to Wakefield, a country retreat built by Quakers Sarah Logan (1751-1796) and Thomas Fisher (17411810) at the northeast corner of Ogontz and Lindley in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. Wakefield was occupied by four generations of the Fisher family until 1918, when ownership was transferred to the City of Philadelphia. The Colonial Dames of America, Chapter II used the home as their headquarters from 1927-1957, furnishing the property with a number of Fisher family items loaned by Lydia Fisher Warner (1870-1947). Her estate eventually gifted these items to The Colonial Dames, Chapter II, and the furnishings were transferred to Lemon Hill in 1957. One of the original missions of The Colonial Dames of America, Chapter II was funding scholarships for secondary education. As the financial obligations of maintaining Lemon Hill increased, scholarship funding decreased. With the goal of returning to the mission of scholarship funding, the Colonial Dames of America, Chapter II are offering the furnishings of Lemon Hill at auction. All proceeds from this sale will go to the Colonial Dames, Chapter II scholarship fund.

ENGRAVED POWDER HORN OF GEORGE NEAS (1744-1809) OF HANOVER, PENNSYLVANIA attributed to the “pointed tree artist,” dated august 7, 1779 Engraved with potted flowers, leaping stags, trees, hunter, dogs, rabbit, and boar, and inscribed, “George Neas Ano, 1779, Aug. 7,” and heightened with black and red. L: 8 1/2 in.

note: According to an article by Rev. Frederick S. Weiser, George Neas (1744-1809) purchased six lots from Richard McAllister, March 7, 1765 in McAllister’s town (now Hanover) on what is now High Street. Neas created a successful tannery on these six lots. He was married to Anna Maria and had a number of children. A powder horn, in the collection of the Hanover Area Historical Society, also inscribed “George Neas” is engraved with the earliest known map of Hanover, about 1775, and shows the tannery surrounded by a stockade. It is thought that Neas left Hanover with his wife, Mary, for Baltimore about 1780 and rented the tanyard to his brother, Matthias. In 1782, George Neas sold the tannery to Matthias for twelve hundred pounds. George Neas died in Baltimore County a wealthy man, with considerable land and seven slaves.

(sight) provenance: By descent in the family to the present owner. note: George Neas, Jr. (1763-1829) and Catherine Slagle (1771-1853) were leading members of the Hanover community when it was incorporated as a town in 1815. Neas was a successful businessman—a third generation tanner— and active in politics. He served as Hanover’s first mayor or Burgess, was appointed Postmaster by President John Adams and served from 1790-1813, was Justice of the Peace, and a member of the State legislature as a Federalist from 1807-1810. Neas was educated in England and renowned for his writings and speechmaking. Catherine-- the daughter of Revolutionary War Colonel and member of the Constitutional Convention, Henry Slagle, and Dorothy Slagle-- was known as a person of great “force of character and sound good sense.” Their home, the Neas House, located at West Chestnut and High Streets, is a historic house museum managed by the Hanover Area Historical Society.

Register, the six-story building that Freeman’s has called home since 1924 is America’s first purpose-built auction house. It forms an integral part of Freeman’s history and is inextricably linked to the many objects that have passed through it over the years. The imperfect and unrefined warehouse surfaces lend themselves well to backdrops that show the versatility of the furniture and decorative arts on offer. We hope to suggest how they might complement a contemporary aesthetic or work within a more nontraditional design scheme.

No course of dealing and no delay or omission on the part of Freeman’s in exercising any right under this Agreement shall operate as a waiver of such right or any other right and waiver on any one or more occasions shall not be construed as a bar to or waiver of any right or remedy of Freeman’s on any future occasion. 18 These Conditions of Sale and the buyer’s, the Consignor’s and Freeman’s rights under these Conditions of Sale shall be governed by, construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Consignor and Buyer agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
