MORE THAN WE DREAMED

A

year before he died, Malcolm Forbes wrote a book entitled More Than

I Dreamed —A Lifetime of Collecting. Even in our wildest dreams I don’t think that my siblings and I realized just how much Pop managed to collect! Two and a half decades and numerous major auctions later, we are still grappling with his glorious varied and vast legacy. The diversity of the lots in this latest sale form a microcosm of his eclectic enthusiasms. They have been drawn from the houses on his two hundred-fifty square mile ranch in Colorado, palace in Tangier, mansion in London, island in Fiji, legendary yacht “The Highlander”, FORBES former headquarters at 60 Fifth Avenue and his beloved New Jersey estate “Timberfield”. From paintings to porcelain, furniture to Fabergé, from toys to trompe l’oeils — it’s all here — a lifetime of collecting indeed! My brothers, sister and I all inherited the collecting “gene” from our father and some of the results of our own efforts are being offered here as well — most notably a selection of photographs from brother Bob’s superb holdings as well as a number of pieces of Biedermeier furniture for which there was, alas, no room in Astrid’s and my new home. Quoting from page 223 of More Than I Dreamed, Pop’s advice is as apt as ever: “I’ve often told my children I hope that if they decide to be done with one of the collections, they will put it back on the auction block so that other people can have the same vast fun and excitement that we did in amassing it.” So have fun and bid away!

AN IRANIAN IMPERIAL ARMORIAL AMBASSADORIAL PART DINNER SERVICE lots 295-298

295 152647/610 A Rosenthal parcel-gilt porcelain Iranian Imperial Armorial Ambassadorial part dinner service rosenthal, germany, commissioned 1973 In a custom variant of the “Aria” pattern, the borders in gilt ciselé, and each piece decorated with the Iranian Imperial crowned lion in gold, and marked to the bottom with the overglaze green Rosenthal mark; comprising 29 dinner plates, 55 salad plates, 23 soup bowls, 37 bread plates, 36 crescent-form cheese dishes, 32 tea bowls and 36 saucers, 31 tea cups and 30 saucers, 15 demitasse cups and 28 saucers, four teapots, three coffee pots, four covered sugars, and two creamers. (approx. 365). Dia: 10 in. (dinner plates) note: The “Aria” pattern by Rosenthal was offered by the company in various iterations from 1934 until it was discontinued in 2005. This particular version, specially commissioned by the Imperial Government for the US Embassy, was ordered in 1973. With delicate incised and gilded borders, all the pieces are also decorated with the Lesser State Arms of Iran, the Lion passant crowned.

After the Iranian Revolution, the Embassy and its property in Washington were subject to a dispute over ownership. The new Khomeini government refused to recognize American property rights in Iran, but insisted that the Iranian Embassy in Washington and its contents belonged to the new leadership. Invoking the 1982 Foreign Missions Act that gives the State Department custody over such foreign-owned embassy properties, the State Department offered the former Imperial properties at an auction in December of 1983. (cf. Perl, Peter, “Iranian Embassy Finery on Auction Block This Weekend,” The Washington Post, 7 December, 1983.) The sale at Weschler’s auction house attracted great attention for the Iranian lots, though they tried to downplay the sale because of its politically charged nature (Pearl, ibid.). The property also caught the eye of Malcolm Forbes, who, long a collector of Imperial property of all kinds, bought portions of the service, which went into use at his Manhattan townhouse off Fifth Avenue. We are grateful to Petra Werner, MA, Curator, Staatliches Museum Fur Porzellan, Selb, Germany, for her assistance in the Rosenthal archives in compiling this entry.

Acquired by Malcolm Forbes December 5-7, 1983, Iranian Embassy Sale. Weschler’s Estate Auction, Washington, D.C. Lots 1280, 1282, 1285, and 1287 Malcolm Forbes, New York Thence by descent

note: In 1953, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi of Iran returned to power after the United Kingdom and United States aided a coup against Prime Minister Mossadegh in August. This service was likely ordered after the restoration from the venerable firm of Mappin & Webb in London, and sent to the U.S. Embassy. After the Iranian Revolution, the Embassy and its property in Washington were subject to a dispute over ownership. The new Khomeini government refused to recognize American property in Iran, but insisted that the Iranian Embassy in Washington and its contents belonged to the new leadership. Invoking the 1982 Foreign Missions Act that gives the State Department custody over such foreign-owned embassy properties, the State Department offered the former Imperial properties at an auction in December of 1986. (cf. Perl, Peter, “Iranian Embassy Finery on Auction Block This Weekend,” The Washington Post, 7 December, 1983.)

HAND-MADE TABLE SILVER BY STUART DEVLIN lots 299-317

S

tuart Devlin (australian/british, b. 1931) is one of the most important gold and silversmiths of the latter 20th century, bringing a focus on both traditional craftsmanship and modern design to all of his works. Born in Geelong, Australia, he won his first scholarship to study design at the Gordon Institute of Technology at only thirteen years of age. He went on to

earn an Art Diploma with highest honors from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and further scholarships which took him, in 1958, to study at the Royal College of Art in London. He received dual diplomas in both light engineering and design and gold and silversmithing, each with high accolades, before embarking on a two-year Harkness Fellowship at Columbia University in New York. His approach to silversmithing, both academic and technical as well as highly creative and inventive, has rewarded Devlin with a career in high-profile public commissions, beginning in 1964 when he won a competition to design new coinage for Australia. Returning to London in 1965, he opened a workshop in Clerkenwell, an area best-known for its fine craftsmen in clockmaking and goldsmithing, to hone his reputation as a traditional craftsman of the highest order. His important commissions include coins and medals for nearly forty countries worldwide, ceremonial works for numerous British universities, sporting trophies, and personal gifts for the British Royal Family. His popularity with the Royal Family, most notably Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, was reflected in his Appointment as Goldsmith and Jeweller to Her Majesty the Queen in 1982. Devlin’s works have a distinctly modern aesthetic, experimenting with both deeply organic and sharply angular forms. He often juxtaposes naturalistic, applied surfaces with minimalist silhouettes, resulting in a uniquely mid-century feel consciously evocative of the ‘Space Age’. At the same time, his centuries-old construction methods, including hand-hammered plates, hand-raised goblets and bowls, lathe-turned stems, and hand-forged flatware, imbue each piece with a weighty and ancient honesty absent in more elaborate cast silver objects. Truly innovative in his designs, his genius helped cultivate the aesthetic now inextricably linked to the technology- and progress-obsessed mid-century. More importantly, his exhaustive academic practice and efforts to push the technical boundaries of metallurgy resulted in new tools and techniques which brought hand gold and silversmithing from the 19th into the 21st century. These nineteen lots of Stuart Devlin dining silver are wholly reflective of Malcolm Forbes’ eclectic and forward-thinking taste. Acquired by Mr. Forbes in the 1980s from several prestigious collections, they are remarkably cohesive as a single oeuvre. Each with date marks from the late 1960s, they are some of the earliest examples of these forms, production of which continued well into the 1990s. Their simple, modernist shapes are contrasted with mottled surfaces that draw inspiration from tree bark, worms, vines, and other natural surfaces. Representative of Devlin’s timeless designs, their beauty is almost without origin — they could be from deep within the earth, or from a future civilization.

345 Eugene J. Kupjack (American, 1912–1991) fabergé, 20th century A romantic depiction of the Fabergé shop, possibly modeled on the facade by Etienne Séjournant (maitre in 1772) of 3, quai de Bourbon, Île Saint-Louis, Paris, between 1775–77, on display at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. H: 16 1/4, W: 15 3/8, D: 24 in. provenance: E.J. Kupjack Associates, Inc., Park Ridge, Illinois, August 16, 1984. Note: The Fabergé firm had, at various times, shops in St. Petersburg and Moscow, as well as Kiev, Odessa, and London. This shopfront does not bear a marked similarity to any of these locations, and so it appears that Eugene Kupjack used a bit of an architectural fantasy to suggest the fin-de-siècle luxury of the Fabergé store. The façade appears to be modeled on the façade by Etienne Séjournant at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, though it is largely a decorative pastiche. This work was exhibited at the Winter Antiques Show, New York, NY, January 19-28, 1990.

Freeman’s reserves the right to determine any and all matters regarding the order, precedence or appropriate increment of bids or the constitution of lots. 6 The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the buyer. The auctioneer has the right to reject any bid, to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion and in the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have the sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re- offer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after sale, the Freeman’s sale record shall be conclusive in all respects. 7 If the auctioneer determines that any opening or later bid or any advance bid is not commensurate with the value of the Property offered, he may reject the same and withdraw the Property from sale. 8 Upon the fall of the hammer, title to any offered lot or article will immediately pass to the highest bidder as determined in the exclusive discretion of the auctioneer, subject to compliance by the buyer with these Conditions of Sale. Subject to the foregoing, all Property shall be paid for and removed by the buyer at his/her expense within ten (10) days of sale and, if not so removed, may be sold by Freeman’s, or sent by Freeman’s to a public warehouse, at the sole risk and charge of the buyer(s), and Freeman’s may prohibit the buyer from participating, directly or indirectly, as a bidder or buyer in any future sale or sales. If the foregoing conditions or any applicable provisions of law are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to Freeman’s and the Consignor (including without limitation the right to hold the buyer(s) liable for the bid price) Freeman’s, at its option, may either cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the buyer(s), or resell the property. In such event, the buyer(s) shall remain liable for any deficiency in the original purchase price and will also be responsible for all costs, including warehousing,

the expense of the ultimate sale, and Freeman’s commission at its regular rates together with all related and incidental charges, including legal fees. Payment is a precondition to removal. Payment shall be by cash, certified check or similar bank draft, or any other method approved by Freeman’s. Checks will not be deemed to constitute payment until cleared. Any exceptions must be made upon Freeman’s written approval of credit prior to sale. In addition, a defaulting buyer will be deemed to have granted and assigned to Freeman’s, a continuing security interest of first priority in any property or money of, or owing to such buyer in Freeman’s possession, and Freeman’s may retain and apply such property or money as collateral security for the obligations due to Freeman’s. Freeman’s shall have all of the rights accorded a secured party under the Pennsylvania Uniform Commercial Code. 10 Unless the sale is advertised and announced as “without reserve”, each lot is offered subject to a reserve and Freeman’s may implement such reserves by bidding through its representatives on behalf of the Consignors. In certain instances, the Consignor may pay less than the standard commission rate where Freeman’s or its representative is a successful bidder on behalf of the Consignor. Where the Consignor is indebted to Freeman’s, Freeman’s may have an interest in the offered lots and the proceeds therefrom, other than the broker’s Commissions, and all sales are subject to any such interest. 11 No “buy” bids shall be accepted at any time for any purpose. 12 Any pre-sale bids must be submitted in writing to Freeman’s prior to commencement of the offer of the first lot of any sale. Freeman’s copy of any such bid shall conclusively be deemed to be the sole evidence of same, and while Freeman’s accepts these bids for the convenience of bidders not present at the auction, Freeman’s shall not be responsible for the failure to execute, or, to execute properly, any pre-sale bid. 13 A Buyer’s Premium will be added to the successful bid price and is payable by the buyer as part of the total purchase price. Freeman’s is not responsible for any acts or omissions in packing or shipping of purchased lots whether or not such carrier is recommended by Freeman’s. Packing and handling of purchased lots is at the responsibility of the buyer and is at the entire risk of the buyer. 16 In no event shall any liability of Freeman’s to the buyer exceed the purchase price actually paid. 17 No claimed modification or amendment of this Agreement on the part of any party shall be deemed extant, enforceable or provable unless it is in writing that has been signed by the parties to this Agreement. No course of dealing and no delay or omission on the part of Freeman’s in exercising any right under this Agreement shall operate as a waiver of such right or any other right and waiver on any one or more occasions shall not be construed as a bar to or waiver of any right or remedy of Freeman’s on any future occasion. 18 These Conditions of Sale and the buyer’s, the Consignor’s and Freeman’s rights under these Conditions of Sale shall be governed by, construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Consignor and Buyer agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Endangered Species Lots marked * are manufactured in whole or in part of restricted materials that may include tortoiseshell, ivory, mother-of-pearl, coral, rhinoceros horn, whalebone or marine ivory. Such materials may require specific licenses, certificates, or CITES documentation for import, export, moving between states in the U.S., or resale. Obtaining these documents may require scientific, laboratory or other expert analysis, in order to establish which species or genus the material came from. Freeman’s is unable to provide this information, and the obligation is on the purchaser of a lot containing any of these materials to ensure that they are able to obtain all the necessary or required documents should they need to, prior to bidding on the lot. If proper documentation or licenses etc. cannot be obtained for a purchased lot, the purchaser will still be required to make an on time payment for the lot as per our standard terms and conditions. Freeman’s cataloguing of the lots marked with this symbol * represents the best of our opinion, and the absence of this symbol from any lot description does not form a warranty that the lot will be free from any licensing or certification restrictions.
