note: William Felsted, the father of Samuel Felsted (1743-1802), was an English-born merchant, ironmonger and organist, who arrived in Jamaica in the 1730s, but was in Boston in 1737, petitioning to establish a shop. In 1741, before returning to Jamaica, William Felsted married Joyce Weaver at Christ Church in Philadelphia. Samuel Felsted was born in Jamaica in 1743, was a property owner by the age of 19, and baptized as an Anabaptist in 1763 at the age of 20. He married Maria Laurence, daughter of a plantation owner, in 1770, and they eventually had eight children. In 1771, Felsted was admitted to the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia—one of four Jamaicans to be accepted to the organization in the 18th century. In support of his application for membership and due to his interest in botany, Felsted sent drawings of Jamaican butterflies. Dr. James Smith, a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in Jamaica, in a letter of support for Felsted’s membership wrote, “Mr. Samuel Felsted, an ingenious young Gentleman of good reputation in this Town applied to me for an introduction to the members of your newly established Society, expressing a great desire to become a correspondent; being long convinced of his merit

in the three Sister Sciences: Poetry, Painting and Music for which he has natural genius.” Smith continues, “His education has been rather confined, but by great industry and force of native genius, he has recommended himself to the wise and learned of this island.”

After his admission to the Philosophical Society, Felsted sent plans for a horizontal windmill designed to power sugar mills. For most of his life, Felsted was the organist at St. Andrew Parish Church in Kingston, and is best known today as the composer of the first complete oratorio written in the New World—Jonah, published in London in 1775.

Emanuel Baruh Lousada (1740-1797 or 1807) was a prominent Jewish merchant, land owner and trader in Kingston with family business connections throughout the West Indies and London. Lousada married an English cousin, Esther Lousada, who died in 1775, and later his brother Daniel’s widow, Rachel. The Lousadas traced their ancestry to Granada, Spain and frequently used a Coat-of-Arms as seen in this painting.

Dr. Thomas Miller married Virginia Collins Jones, and they had five children: George, Thomas, Anna, Virginia and Sally. D: 33 1/2 in. provenance: Family tradition traces the ownership of this sideboard to Dr. James Ritchie Sparkman (1815-1897) and Mary Elizabeth Heriot Sparkman (1827-1912) of Dirleton Plantation, Plantersville, Georgetown County on the Peedee River. Dr. Sparkman built the extant 23-room plantation house in 1859. It has been suggested that the sideboard was inherited by Mrs. Sparkman from her parents, Dr. Edward Thomas Heriot (1793-1854), a physician, merchant and planter, and Elizabeth Stark Heriot (1801-1886), who lived at Mount Arena Plantation on Sandy Island and Dirleton Plantation.

The sideboard may have originally been owned by Mrs. Sparkman’s grandparents, William Heriot (1745) and Mary Thomas (1771-1806), who married in 1792. Heriot emigrated from Scotland in 1768 and served in the South Carolina militia during the Revolutionary War. He became a prominent Georgetown merchant and bookseller, highly active in civic and church affairs.

113 note: The full-length portrait of the Marquis de Lafayette in civilian dress was presented to the U.S. House of Representatives by French artist Ary Scheffer in 1824 to commmemorate Lafayette’s address to the Joint Meeting of Congress. Upon its receipt, the portrait was highly praised for being “as large as life, and... the best portrait we have ever seen. Its fidelity to the venerable original is, indeed most admirable.”

The likeness became the most famous image of Lafayette during his thirteen month US tour, during which time it hung in the Capitol Rotunda and was visited by numerous artists wishing to make copies.

his portrait was commissioned in 1825 by Isaac P. Davis (1771-1855), a wealthy Boston manufacturer of cables and cordage for construction of rope bridges and an important early patron of American artists. Davis served on the Fine Arts Committee of the Boston Athenaeum for many years and was an intimate friend of both artist, Gilbert Stuart, and sitter, Daniel Webster.

As a brilliant representation of a young Massachusetts Congressman, this portrait is the meeting of two of the nineteenth century’s great American talents.

Webster was one of the most highly regarded Constitutional scholars, courtroom attorneys, diplomats and politicians of his time. Besides the House of Representatives, he also served in the Senate, twice as Secretary of State, and ran for the office of President on the Whig Party ticket. Nationally known for his spectacular oratory skills, Webster’s 1830 address, “Second Reply to Hayne,” is regarded as the most eloquent speech ever delivered in Congress. In that speech, he describes the U.S. government as “made for the people, made by the people and answerable to the people,” later paraphrased by Lincoln in his Gettysburg Address. Webster championed America’s Union and put forth compromises to avoid a Civil War.

The portrait hung in Davis’s Boston parlor until he presented it to Webster, who displayed it in his family home in Marshfield, Massachusetts. In 1878, it was rescued from a house fire by Webster’s descendants and subsequently became the property of Dedham, Massachusetts politician, George Frederick Williams (18521932). The portrait later joined the collection of Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge (1882-1973), whose estate was sold

by Sotheby’s in 1975. At this auction, the portrait was re-acquired by a member of the Webster family who then gifted it to the Holderness School in New Hampshire.

Comparably, Stuart was one of the era’s most gifted, prolific and successful portrait painters of America’s early nationhood. After studying in London and Dublin, Stuart gained popularity overseas and his portraits were sought after on both sides of the Atlantic. Stuart won commissions from a host of notable figures, including Kings George III and IV; Abigail and John Adams; Thomas Jefferson; James Monroe; and, most famously, George Washington.

By the end of his career, Stuart had painted more than 1,000 portraits of politically and socially prominent Americans. His paintings of the Founding Fathers have frequently been used as models for engravings and are often the most recognizable images of their respective sitters.

Lawrence Park discusses this portrait in his classic publication, Gilbert Stuart: An Illustrated Descriptive List of his Works (1926), remarking that it “...has a depth of expression for which (Stuart) was so remarkable.” Park also recounts Webster’s approval of this likeness: “One day while visiting Mr. Davis, Webster stood for some time before the picture and, making a low bow to it, said, ‘I am willing that it shall go down to posterity.’”

note: In January of 1764, Germantown citizens met at town hall to discuss means of protecting themselves from the ravages of fire—a daily occurrence in colonial America.

Germantown, in the northwest corner of Philadelphia, was too far from the centralized Philadelphia fire companies, and the roads were often too poor to reach the fire in time. The decision was, therefore, made to organize three separate volunteer fire companies: the Fellowship of the Upper Ward, the Fellowship of the Middle Ward and the Fellowship of the Lower Ward.

The Fellowship of the Upper Ward, organized in March of 1764, located on Franklin Street, would eventually become the Franklin Fire Company. They adopted the portrait of Benjamin Franklin as their symbol, honoring the founding father and Philadelphian most closely associated with the founding of the city’s fire fighting and insurance companies.

Railroad, Navigation and Banking Company. After the annexation of Texas, Green moved to California where, in 1849, he was elected State Senator from Sacramento County and subsequently sponsored the bill for the establishment of the State University at Berkeley. In 1850, Green was elected Major General of the First Division of the California Militia. Green returned to North Carolina in 1857, where he purchased Esmerelda Plantation. He died at Esmerelda in 1863, reputedly heartbroken over Confederate losses Green’s papers are in the collections of the University of Texas and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. $4,000-6,000

(pestle) provenance: By descent in the family to the present owner. note: Thomas Jefferson Green (1802-1863) was born in Warren County, North Carolina, educated at both the University of North Carolina and U.S. Military Academy at West Point and began a political career in the North Carolina State Legislature. In 1826, he moved to the territory of Florida and served as Justice of the Peace and representative in the territorial legislature. Green left Florida after the death of his young wife in 1836 and travelled to the then Republic of Texas where he established the Texas Land Company. Green was commissioned that same year a Brigadier General in the Texas Army and successfully raised money, procured ammunitions and recruited a brigade for the “War of Texas Independence” cause against Mexico. This was likely when the Mortar and Pestle was presented to Green. He later represented Bexar County in the House of Representatives of the First Congress of the Republic of Texas and was elected to the Senate of the Second Congress of the Republic of Texas. In 1843, as the representative from Brazoria County, Green introduced the bill establishing the Rio Grande as the boundary between Texas and Mexico. He was one of the organizers of the Texas

Their son, Colonel Ezra H. Ripple (1842-1909), enlisted in Company K, Fifty-second Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry in March 1864. In July of 1864, during an assault on Fort Johnson in Charleston Harbor, he was taken prisoner, and was later transferred to the Andersonville stockade. After three months, he was transferred again to Charleston and then to Florence, South Carolina, where he was kept for five years, enduring wretched conditions, illness, and mistreatment. After a failed escape attempt, he remained in stockades until his honorable discharge at Camp Parole, Annapolis, June 30, 1865. He was a noted citizen of Scranton, serving as postmaster and mayor.

He married Sarah H. Hackett (b. 1843) in Scranton, Pennsylvania on April 22, 1874. $1,500-2,500

the mclin collection of quilts and coverlets washington county, tennessee 1830-1910 lots 165-183 n 1979, a remarkable and large group of quilts and coverlets were found in the Estate of Mattie Duncan Beard (1888-1979) in Jonesboro, Tennessee. While cleaning out the large house, Mattie’s daughter, Ruth Beard Farris (1917-1990) and granddaughter, Elizabeth Farris Hulcher (b. 1946), found over fifty exceptional quilts and quilt tops, and a number of coverlets, dating from 1830 to 1910. The textiles were in remarkable condition, having been carefully stored, some in custom-made wooden boxes lined with cotton. Twenty-seven quilts were sold at the auction of Mattie Duncan Beard’s Estate, but the best examples, admired for their aesthetic beauty, pattern, coloration and exceptional quilting, were kept by Ruth Beard Farris. In 1990, the quilts and coverlets were

One ring inscribed, “Walt Whitman’s hair given to Mrs. J.H.J. (Mrs John (Alma) Henry Johnston) in 1881 / given to B.J. (Bertha Johnston) 1893 / B.J. to M.J. (May Johnston) in 1921.” note: Kitty and Harry Johnston were the youngest children of New York Jeweler John Henry Johnston (1837-1919) and his wife, Amelia F. Johnston (d. 1877). According to The Walt Whitman Archives, Johnston “provided personal and financial support for the aging poet and housed him for long stays in New York in the 1870s.”

The Johnstons had a wide circle of friends including Charles Dana, Theodore Roosevelt, John Burroughs, Henry Ward Beecher, Horace Greeley, Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Walt Whitman.

Johnston also served as chief organizer for fundraising lectures that benefitted Whitman. During Whitman’s stay in 1877, Johnston’s first wife died as she gave birth to Harry.

After Johnston’s marriage to his second wife, Alma Calder Johnston, Whitman returned to the Johnston home on upper Fifth Avenue and in a recollection, J.H. Johnston remarked, “Walt enjoyed rambling up & down the Avenue and opposite Central Park with our two youngest children, and one day of his own accord, he took them down to Kurtz—then the most famous photographer in New York—and had himself photographed with them.” Whitman wrote of Harry and Kitty describing them as “model children, lively & free... [who] form a great part of my comfort here.” In August of 1881, Whitman stayed at the Johnstons’ summer house at Mott Haven on the Harlem River to finish editing his new edition of Leaves of Grass. All of the Johnston childen affectionately called him “Uncle Walt.” Accompanied by photocopy of hand-written note: “...Walt W.’s hair cut from his head by Alm. Cald. J. in 1881/ W.W.’s hair cut from his head at 1309 Fifth Ave on July 1878.” $3,000-5,000

inherited by Elizabeth Farris Hulcher, who began serious research with curators, historians and conservators into her family’s genealogy and into textile history so as to date and attribute her inherited collection. While no written record was kept, stories relating to the makers of the quilts and coverlets—the McLin Family women—had long been part of the family’s oral tradition. A relative recalled that ”the [McLin Family] ladies had the reputation of being the finest seamstresses in the area-- those gals were artists with the needle, [who] fussed over” their quilting. Rachel McLin’s granddaughter, Martha or “Mattie,” wrote to her fiancé before her 1886 marriage, “When you have time to think of me, pity my sore fingers for we are quilting and I have pricked my fingers badly...” The McLin women were also known for their weaving skills, and their renowned quilting and weaving techniques descended matrilineally, passing from mother to daughter to granddaughter. This fine collection of Tennessee quilts and coverlets was loaned, in part, by Mattie Duncan Beard to be illustrated in House and Garden, “Southern Highland’s” issue (June, 1942) and has been exhibited in numerous museums.

TERMS & CONDITIONS All property offered and sold (“property”) through Samuel T. Freeman & Co, (“Freeman’s”) shall be offered and sold on the terms and conditions set forth below which constitutes the complete statement of the terms and conditions on which all property is offered for sale. By bidding at the auction, whether present in person or by agent, by written bid, telephone, internet or other means, the buyer agrees to be bound by these terms and conditions.

1 Unless otherwise indicated, all Property will be offered by Freeman’s as agent for the Consignor.

2 Freeman’s reserves the right to vary the terms of sale and any such variance shall become part of these Conditions of Sale.

3 Buyer acknowledges that it had the right to make a full inspection of all Property prior to sale to determine the condition, size, repair or restoration of any Property. Therefore, all property is sold “AS-IS”.

Freeman’s is acting solely as an auction broker, and unless otherwise stated, does not own the Property offered for sale and has made no independent investigation of the Property. Freeman’s makes no warranty of title, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, or any other warranty or representation regarding the description, genuineness, attribution, provenance or condition to the Property of any kind or nature with respect to the Property.

4 Freeman’s in its sole and exclusive discretion, reserves the right to withdraw any property, at any time, before the fall of the hammer.

5 Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer at the time of sale, all bids are per lot as numbered in the printed catalogue. Freeman’s reserves the right to determine any and all matters regarding the order, precedence or appropriate increment of bids or the constitution of lots.

6 The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the buyer. The auctioneer has the right to reject any bid, to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion and in the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have the sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re- offer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after sale, the Freeman’s sale record shall be conclusive in all respects.

7 If the auctioneer determines that any opening or later bid or any advance bid is not commensurate with the value of the Property offered, he may reject the same and withdraw the Property from sale.

8 Upon the fall of the hammer, title to any offered lot or article will immediately pass to the highest bidder as determined in the exclusive discretion of the auctioneer, subject to compliance by the buyer with these Conditions of Sale. Buyer thereupon assumes full risk and responsibility of the property sold, agrees to sign any requested confirmation of purchase, and agrees to pay the full price, plus Buyer’s Premium, therefore or such part, upon such terms as Freeman’s may require.

9 No lot may be removed from Freeman’s premises until the buyer has paid in full the purchase price therefor including Buyer’s Premium or has satisfied such terms that Freeman’s, in its sole discretion, shall require. Subject to the foregoing, all Property shall be paid for and removed by the buyer at his/her expense within ten (10) days of sale and, if not so removed, may be sold by Freeman’s, or sent by Freeman’s to a public warehouse, at the sole risk and charge of the buyer(s), and Freeman’s may prohibit the buyer from participating, directly or indirectly, as a bidder or buyer in any future sale or sales. In addition to other remedies available to Freeman’s by law, Freeman’s reserves the right to impose a late charge of 1.5% per month of the total purchase price on any balance remaining ten (10) days after the day of sale. If Property is not removed by the buyer within ten (10) days, a handling charge of 1% of the total purchase price per month from the tenth day after the sale until removal by the buyer shall be payable to Freeman’s by the buyer; Freeman’s shall charge 1.5% of the total purchase price per month for any property not so removed

within 60 days after the sale. Freeman’s will not be responsible for any loss, damage, theft, or otherwise responsible for any goods left in Freeman’s possession after ten (10) days. If the foregoing conditions or any applicable provisions of law are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to Freeman’s and the Consignor (including without limitation the right to hold the buyer(s) liable for the bid price) Freeman’s, at its option, may either cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the buyer(s), or resell the property. In such event, the buyer(s) shall remain liable for any deficiency in the original purchase price and will also be responsible for all costs, including warehousing, the expense of the ultimate sale, and Freeman’s commission at its regular rates together with all related and incidental charges, including legal fees. Payment is a precondition to removal. Payment shall be by cash, certified check or similar bank draft, or any other method approved by Freeman’s.

Checks will not be deemed to constitute payment until cleared. Any exceptions must be made upon Freeman’s written approval of credit prior to sale. In addition, a defaulting buyer will be deemed to have granted and assigned to Freeman’s, a continuing security interest of first priority in any property or money of, or owing to such buyer in Freeman’s possession, and Freeman’s may retain and apply such property or money as collateral security for the obligations due to Freeman’s. Freeman’s shall have all of the rights accorded a secured party under the Pennsylvania Uniform Commercial Code.

10 Unless the sale is advertised and announced as “without reserve”, each lot is offered subject to a reserve and Freeman’s may implement such reserves by bidding through its representatives on behalf of the Consignors. In certain instances, the Consignor may pay less than the standard commission rate where Freeman’s or its representative is a successful bidder on behalf of the Consignor. Where the Consignor is indebted to Freeman’s, Freeman’s may have an interest in the offered lots and the proceeds therefrom, other than the broker’s Commissions, and all sales are subject to any such interest.

11 No “buy” bids shall be accepted at any time for any purpose.

12 Any pre-sale bids must be submitted in writing to Freeman’s prior to commencement of the offer of the first lot of any sale. Freeman’s copy of any such bid shall conclusively be deemed to be the sole evidence of same, and while Freeman’s accepts these bids for the convenience of bidders not present at the auction, Freeman’s shall not be responsible for the failure to execute, or, to execute properly, any pre-sale bid.

13 A Buyer’s Premium will be added to the successful bid price and is payable by the buyer as part of the total purchase price. The Buyer’s Premium shall be: 25% on the first $200,000 of the hammer price of each lot, 20% on the portion from $200,001 through $3,000,000, and 12% thereafter.

14 Unless exempted by law from the payment thereof, the buyer will be required to pay any and all federal excise tax and any state and/or local sales taxes, including where deliveries are to be made outside the state where a sale is conducted, which may be subject to a corresponding or compensating tax in another state.

15 Freeman’s may, as a service to buyer, arrange to have purchased property posted and shipped at the buyer’s expense. Freeman’s is not responsible for any acts or omissions in packing or shipping of purchased lots whether or not such carrier is recommended by Freeman’s. Packing and handling of purchased lots is at the responsibility of the buyer and is at the entire risk of the buyer.

16 In no event shall any liability of Freeman’s to the buyer exceed the purchase price actually paid.

17 No claimed modification or amendment of this Agreement on the part of any party shall be deemed extant, enforceable or provable unless it is in writing that has been signed by the parties to this Agreement. No course of dealing and no delay or omission on the part of Freeman’s in exercising any right under this Agreement shall operate as a waiver of such right or any other right and waiver on any one or more occasions shall not be construed as a bar to or waiver of any right or remedy of Freeman’s on any future occasion.

18 These Conditions of Sale and the buyer’s, the Consignor’s and Freeman’s rights under these Conditions of Sale shall be governed by, construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Consignor and Buyer agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Buyer’s Premium A Buyer’s Premium will be added to the successful bid price and is payable by the buyer as part of the total purchase price. Catalogue Descriptions All item descriptions, dimensions and estimates are provided for guidance only. It is the buyer’s responsibility to inspect all lots prior to bidding to ensure that the condition is to their satisfaction. Bidding At the sale Registered bidders will be assigned a bidder number and given a paddle for use at the sale. Once the first bid has been placed, the auctioneer asks for higher bids in increments determined by the auctioneer. To place your bid, simply raise your paddle until the auctioneer acknowledges you. The auctioneer will not mistake a random gesture for a bid.

By phone A limited number of telephone lines are available for bidding by phone through a Freeman’s representative. Phone lines must be reserved in advance. Requests must be submitted no later than 24 hours prior to the scheduled start of the sale.

On the internet A fully-illustrated catalogue is available on-line at www.freemansauction.com. Registered bidders may leave absentee bids through the website and will receive email confirmation of their bid. Freeman’s is not responsible for errors or failure to execute bids.

Payment Payment is due within ten (10) working days of the sale. Lots purchased will not be released until we have received full payment. Payment may be made in cash, by check, money order, or debit card. Payments by check must clear the bank before goods will be released.

Removal of Purchases Deliveries will not be made during the time of the sale unless otherwise indicated by the auctioneer. All items must be paid for and removed within ten (10) working days of the sale. Purchases not so removed may be turned over to a licensed warehouse at the expense and risk of the purchaser.

Shipping and Packing Responsibility for packing, shipping and insurance shall be exclusively that of the purchaser. Upon request, Freeman’s will provide the purchaser with names of professional packers and shippers known to us.

Endangered Species Lots marked * are manufactured in whole or in part of restricted materials that may include tortoiseshell, ivory, mother-ofpearl, coral, rhinoceros horn, whalebone or marine ivory. Such materials may require specific licenses, certificates, or CITES documentation for import, export, moving between states in the U.S., or resale. Obtaining these documents may require scientific, laboratory or other expert analysis, in order to establish which species or genus the material came from. Freeman’s is unable to provide this information, and the obligation is on the purchaser of a lot containing any of these materials to ensure that they are able to obtain all the necessary or required documents should they need to, prior to bidding on the lot.
