I

t is a privilege for Freeman’s to present the collection of Chinese and Southeast Asian ceramics assembled in Singapore by Mr. and Mrs. Gaylord and Pamela Watkins. As a collection, it offers the connoisseur and the student of Asian ceramics a rare opportunity to compare the range of wares produced in China and the kilns of Thailand, Vietnam and Burma, and to see the influences, variations on theme, and the wholly original forms and decoration informed by local tastes and customs. There are classic examples of Chinese white wares, celadons, and particularly black-glazed wares, dating from the Five Dynasties and Song period though the early Ming dynasty, such as the ewer, lot 151, the guan jar, lot 154, and the two globular jars, lots 155 and 157. Additional Song ceramics include the rare “persimmon”-glazed “Ding” ware bowl and cover, lot 164. The Southeast Asian stonewares and earthenwares include celadons clearly influenced by Chinese celadons of the Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties, which were so widely treasured by the societies of maritime Asia and the Middle East, such as the Yaozhou molded “Chrysanthemum” bowl, lot 165, the elegantly simple southern Song “Lotus” brush washer, lot 167, and the incised floriform Longquan bowl with molded central floret, lot 168. The Southeast Asian green-glazed wares influenced by Chinese examples include the Vietnamese gourd-form ewer, lot 171, the Vietnamese floral-incised “alms” bowl and the incised Thai dishes, lot 184, and the Thai incised dish from the Phan kilns, lot 191. The Southeast Asian ceramics are particularly diverse, illustrating a broad range of types and forms from a wide array of kilns. These include a particularly fine and elegant Vietnamese whiteglazed “lotus” jar and cover, Ly dynasty, 12th-13th century, lot 170, several late 15th/16th century Vietnamese blue and white-decorated dishes and jars influenced by Yuan and Ming dynasty Chinese blue and white porcelains (lots 175-183), two rare Burmese green-decorated white-glazed bowls, lots 189 and 190, and a diverse group of Thai dishes and vessels from the Sawankhalok and Kalong kilns (lots 184-186, 192). In addition, there are examples rarely seen in western collections, such as the Burmese Shwebo bowl, lot 187, and the Thai (Haripunjaya) inlaid earthenware jar (nam ton), lot 193. Of additional interest is that several of these pieces have been published and discussed in “Southeast Asian ceramics, New Light on Old Pottery” edited by John Miksic, professor, Department of Southeast Asian studies, National University of Singapore. The collection is rounded out by additional Chinese and southeast Asian ceramics which serve to further remind us of the international trade which was carried out along the coasts of the south China sea and beyond, such as the so-called “Swatow” and “Kraak” blue and white porcelain bowls and dishes, lots 199 and 200, and the large brown-glazed stoneware “Martaban” jars, lot 197, so important in transporting oils, spices, perfumes, foods and even smaller ceramics in the coastal trade between southern China, Indonesia, Malaysia and beyond to India, the East African coast and the Middle East. We are pleased to have been given the rare opportunity to present such a diverse collection, which not only illustrates the rich historic trade links forged between the societies and cultures of China and East Asia, but which also serves as a tribute to the eye of the collectors, who so carefully assembled a group of works as aesthetically pleasing as they are reminders of the history of this important region of the world. 44

Once the first bid has been placed, the auctioneer asks for higher bids in increments determined by the auctioneer. To place your bid, simply raise your paddle until the auctioneer acknowledges you. Shipping and Packing Responsibility for packing, shipping and insurance shall be exclusively that of the purchaser. Upon request, Freeman’s will provide the purchaser with names of professional packers and shippers known to us. Endangered Species Lots marked * are manufactured in whole or in part of restricted materials that may include tortoiseshell, ivory, mother-of-pearl, coral, rhinoceros horn, whalebone or marine ivory. Such materials may require specific licenses, certificates, or CITES documentation for import, export, moving between states in the U.S., or resale. Obtaining these documents may require scientific, laboratory or other expert analysis, in order to establish which species or genus the material came from. Freeman’s is unable to provide this information, and the obligation is on the purchaser of a lot containing any of these materials to ensure that they are able to obtain all the necessary or required documents should they need to, prior to bidding on the lot. If proper documentation or licenses etc. cannot be obtained for a purchased lot, the purchaser will still be required to make an on time payment for the lot as per our standard terms and conditions. Freeman’s cataloguing of the lots marked with this symbol * represents the best of our opinion, and the absence of this symbol from any lot description does not form a warranty that the lot will be free from any licensing or certification restrictions.

In writing Bid forms are available in the sale room and at the back of the catalogue. These should be submitted in person, by mail or by fax no later than one hour prior to the scheduled start of the sale. The auctioneer will bid on your behalf up to the limit.
