13 A fourteen karat gold ‘Liberty Bell’ signet ring centering a piece of the Liberty Bell, mounted in fourteen karat gold. Ring size: 6 1/2 provenance: Property through descent of John Morin Scott Accompanied by a document from Winterthur stating “The alloy analysis of the bronze confirmed the provenance of the ring and that it was prepared from metal drilled from the crack of the Liberty Bell in the middle of the 19th century”. note: The Liberty Bell bears this timeless biblical verse, an ideal which all Americans hold dear. More than just a piece of fine jewelry, this patriotic ring is a unique artifact of American History. The signet ring contains an authentic piece from the Liberty Bell that was removed from the Bell when it was repaired early in 1846. The crack that we are all familiar with today is actually an attempt to repair a much finer split that developed over 90 years of continued use. A process called “stop drilling” was performed in an effort to halt the growth of the much narrower crack. This procedure involved making numerous drill holes in the Bell along the length of the crack to prevent it from spreading further. Drilling the Bell produced excess metal which was used in this case as the center piece for a gold signet ring. The ring was presented to John Morin Scott as a gift from the city of Philadelphia after his tenure as Mayor from 1841 to 1844. Scott, who graduated from Princeton at the age of 15, was a 1st Lieutenant of the 2nd Troop of the City Cavalry, served in the War of 1812, and was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives before his election to Mayor. Scott descended from a long line of prominent political and military figures dating back to the early 1600’s and Sir John Scott, who was the 1st Baronet of Ancrum Scotland. The lineage continues in America with his son Capt. John Morin Scott who served as Brigadier General in the Revolutionary war under General George Washington. General Scott fought fiercely to defend New York where he had large land holdings in what is now Times Square and the Theater district. He later became New York’s first Secretary of State. His son Lewis Allaire Scott also served as New York’s secretary of State succeeding his father. Lewis married Julianna Sitgreaves who gave birth to their son, John Morin Scott served 3 terms as the mayor of Philadelphia. The gold and brass signet ring has since been passed down through the family. In 2013, descendants of John Morin Scott brought the ring to Winterthur for metallurgic testing to verify the provenance of the ring. Winterthur was chosen due to it’s previous tests performed on the Liberty Bell and knowledge of it’s metallic content and alloy. In 1960, the Franklin Institute took drillings from the Liberty Bell and the International Nickel Company analyzed the content. In 1975, scientists from Winterthur Museum and the DuPont Company used an X-Ray Florescence Analyzer to describe the metallic content at ten points around the rim of the Bell. Winterhtur determined that the brass portion of the ring did indeed match fragments of the Liberty Bell and confirmed the provenance described. The ring is accompanied by the document provided by Winterthur stating that “The alloy analysis of the bronze confirmed the provenance of the ring and that it was prepared from metal drilled from the crack of the Liberty Bell in the middle of the 19th century”. Freeman’s Auction house is proud to present this unique and rare piece of American history. Freeman’s is America’s oldest auction house and was operating at the time when the Liberty Bell rang for the last time in 1846 to celebrate George Washington’s birthday. $8,000-12,000

Buyer’s Premium A Buyer’s Premium will be added to the successful bid price and is payable by the buyer as part of the total purchase price. The Buyer’s Premium shall be: 25% on the first $200,000 of the hammer price of each lot, 20% on the portion from $200,001 through $3,000,000, and 12% thereafter.

Catalogue Descriptions All item descriptions, dimensions and estimates are provided for guidance only. It is the buyer’s responsibility to inspect all lots prior to bidding to ensure that the condition is to their satisfaction. If potential buyers are unable to inspect lots in person, our specialists will be happy to prepare detailed Condition Reports on individual lots as quickly as possible. These are for guidance only, and all lots will be sold “as is” as per our Terms and Conditions of Sale.

Endangered Species Lots marked * are manufactured in whole or in part of restricted materials that may include tortoiseshell, ivory, mother-of-pearl, coral, rhinoceros horn, whalebone or marine ivory. Such materials may require specific licenses, certificates, or CITES documentation for import, export, moving between states in the U.S., or resale. Obtaining these documents may require scientific, laboratory or other expert analysis, in order to establish which species or genus the material came from. Freeman’s is unable to provide this information, and the obligation is on the purchaser of a lot containing any of these materials to ensure that they are able to obtain all the necessary or required documents should they need to, prior to bidding on the lot. If proper documentation or licenses etc. cannot be obtained for a purchased lot, the purchaser will still be required to make an on time payment for the lot as per our standard terms and conditions. Freeman’s cataloguing of the lots marked with this symbol * represents the best of our opinion, and the absence of this symbol from any lot description does not form a warranty that the lot will be free from any licensing or certification restrictions.

Bidding At the sale Registered bidders will be assigned a bidder number and given a paddle for use at the sale. Once the first bid has been placed, the auctioneer asks for higher bids in increments determined by the auctioneer. To place your bid, simply raise your paddle until the auctioneer acknowledges you. The auctioneer will not mistake a random gesture for a bid. By phone A limited number of telephone lines are available for bidding by phone through a Freeman’s representative. Phone lines must be reserved in advance. Requests must be submitted no later than 24 hours prior to the scheduled start of the sale. In writing Bid forms are available in the sale room and at the back of the catalogue. These should be submitted in person, by mail or by fax no later than one hour prior to the scheduled start of the sale. The auctioneer will bid on your behalf up to the limit.
