reeman’s is delighted to offer the Memento Mori and Mourning Jewelry collection of the late Irvin & Anita Schorsch.

This remarkable and extensive collection of over 150 tokens of mortality, grief, commemoration and remembrance, represents over 200 years of private and public expressions of death. From the graphic symbols of skulls, skeletons and hourglasses featured on the rock crystal slides of the 17th century to the more idealized depictions of mourning and loss found on pieces from the Neoclassical period, the collection vividly documents the culture of grief and tracks Western society’s changing relationship to death and to those who have died. As collectors and historians, Irvin and Anita Schorsch did not limit themselves to the more traditional areas of Americana collecting: furniture, decorative arts, needlework, textiles, fine arts and silver. Their interest in all tangible aspects of American and English life and craftsmanship, from the 17th to 19th centuries, led the couple, especially Anita, to a passionate immersion in the study and collecting of the artful expressions of mourning. Anita’s intense scholarship in the area led to the 1976 publication, Mourning Becomes America, Mourning Art in the New Nation. The publication was released in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name at the Pennsylvania State Museum and the Albany Institute of History and Art. In 1990, the Schorsches established the unique Museum of Mourning Art at Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania to house and exhibit their impressive collection.

1 Gold and pearl “Stuart crystal” love token or slide england, late 17th century Of oval form, with two applied gold cherubs holding aloft a flaming heart, above gold wire cipher, “M,” all against hairwork ground and under faceted rock crystal, with seed pearl surround, reverse engraved with flowers and scrolls with loop attachments, seemingly unmarked. L: 1 1/8 in. provenance: Mrs. Halpin, March 14, 1994. Likely Raizel Halpin (1925-2003), a partner in Ares Antiques, dealers in rare jewelry on Madison Avenue in Manhattan, New York. $1,000-2,000

The term Stuart crystal originally referred to the rock crystal jewelry clandestinely worn by Royalists (those loyal to the Stuart monarchy) in reaction to the execution of King Charles I in 1649. Typically featuring a miniature portrait or the cipher of the slain King under faceted rock crystal, these early Stuart crystal tokens were undoubtedly political in origin. The Restoration of the monarchy, which began in 1660, ushered in a shift whereby Stuart crystals were fashioned and worn publicly and for much more personal reasons: in honor of living loved ones, in memory of those who had passed, or as Memento Mori - as a reminder of one’s own ephemerality.

Please note: items are not shown to scale, but instead, are enlarged to show detail.

Likely Raizel Halpin (1925-2003), a partner in Ares Antiques, dealers in rare jewelry on Madison Avenue in Manhattan, New York. note: To ensure its survival and to continue the Protestant succession established by the Revolution of 1688, the House of Stuart needed to produce an heir. Despite her seventeen pregnancies, Princess Anne (later Queen of England, Ireland and Scotland, 1702-1714), wife of Prince George of Denmark (1653-1708), had only one child survive past infancy: Prince William, Duke of Gloucester. William’s childhood was plagued with illness, and he died just days after his eleventh birthday on July 30, 1700. Lest the throne be turned back over to a Catholic, Parliament enacted the 1701 Act of Settlement, which ultimately transferred the British throne to Sophia of Hanover and her Protestant heirs subsequent to Anne’s death in 1714. $2,000-2,500 25 Gold “Stuart crystal” mourning slide converted to pendant england, early 18th century Of oval form, with applied skull and crossbones over gold wire initials, “JM,” against hairwork ground with cobalt blue and looping gold wire border, all under faceted rock crystal, the reverse with loop attachments and inscription, “Obt 12/ May 1704/ æta 39,” seemingly unmarked. The late 18th and early 19th century pieces in the Collection demonstrate the influence of Neoclassicism—the Greco-Roman revival popularized after the archaeological finds in Pompeii and Herculaneum during the first half of the 18th century. Classical devices and urns, weeping willow trees, idealized mourners at tombs or obelisks, and winged cherubs ornamenting lockets, pins, bracelets, rings and miniatures kept in cases, come to replace their gruesome, bony predecessors. These Neoclassical images are grief-filled, but more peaceful and idyllic, free of the negativity of reality while also poignant reminders of death and human mortality.

Though jewelry incorporating hair from a corpse may not exactly align with current sartorial trends, wearing such an accessory was considered an appropriate, and even stylish, tribute from the late 17th century onward. Locks of hair were often exchanged between (living) friends and lovers, and they were kept by mourning family members who coveted physical mementos of their late relatives. Human hair—in loose or plaited strands—could be secured within the back of a brooch, or used as a surround within a slide, ring or pendant, and then sentimentally worn by the bereaved. In the Victorian Era, the hair tradition peaked, to the extent that entire pieces of jewelry, as well as wreaths and pieces of art, were frequently fashioned from hair. The popularity of mourning jewelry and art in mid 19th century England was so great that the country purportedly imported 50 tons of hair a year to satisfy demand.

G

ene Derryberry (1942- 2007) was known as a man who had figured out what was important in life and what was not, and lived accordingly. A graduate of Duke University Law School, Derryberry

excelled as a lawyer with the firm of Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore of Roanoke for 34 years. He was a talented musician, and would often sing and play his guitar in the middle of the afternoon to lighten up the office. A colleague remembered, “When Gene would sing, everything in the world would be all right.” Known as a mentor and strict grammarian, Derryberry was in love with teaching and learning. He volunteered as a Barrister Book Buddy, served as a board member for Total Action Against Poverty, The Child Health investment Partnership and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke, where he sang in the choir. Derryberry also loved American antiques— especially antiques with a history. He began collecting in the 1960s and bought from dealers and auction houses up and down the east coast. Derryberry had a special passion for small painted boxes and for Windsor chairs with original paint. According to antique and art appraiser and former auction house owner, Ken Farmer, “The thing I remember most about Gene was his endless curiosity about the objects we were selling. He always seemed to have another question.” An ideal collector, Derryberry maintained highly detailed records on each item acquired. It is the wish of Gene’s widow, Joanne Derryberry, that his cherished collection find new and loving owners.

the herrick-maynard-hatch dining chairs designed by alexander jackson davis (1803-1892) for ericstan, tarrytown, ny

T

he six armchairs and eight side chairs offered here are one of the last groups of seating designed by the architect Alexander Jackson Davis (1803-1892) still in private hands. Securely documented

furniture by Davis exists for only four of his houses: Lyndhurst, Tarrytown, New York (first built as Knoll 1838-1842, expanded into the present house 1864-1867); Belmead, Powhatan County, Virginia (built 1845-1848), Ericstan, Tarrytown, New York (built 1855-1859), and Walnut Wood, Bridgeport, Connecticut (built 1846-1850). The fourteen chairs in this sale were made for Ericstan about 1857 by the firm of Burns and Brother in New York City, the same firm that made the lost chairs for the original Knoll dining room at the same period. Although they have less carving than the dining room chairs made for Lyndhurst in the 1860s, the Ericstan chairs are more consistent with Davis’s earlier style. Other surviving furniture from Ericstan includes the immense dining table that some of these chairs were used with, sold by a cousin of the consignor to the Toledo Museum of Art in the early 1980s; an occasional table with a carved frieze and cast iron bull’s legs (private collection); two large, throne-like library armchairs with carved finials in the form of a maid and man o’ the woods (private collections); and delicate, rib-backed chairs with deer hoof feet (Museum of the City of New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art). Records indicate that Davis also designed library bookcases, two bedsteads, a wardrobe, and a sideboard for the house, but their present whereabouts are now uncertain.

148

The carving of the chairs displays some variations, notably in the feet, and one armchair appears to be a variant design with a loose seat frame rather than upholstered partially over the rails. One armchair retains relatively early oilcloth covers and probably retains much of its original upholstery foundation. Other chairs appear to retain old, if not original back foundations under modern red leather covers. The furniture from Ericstan was preserved with the house for much of its existence. The original builder, John J. Herrick, seems to have over-extended himself paying for the house and was forced to sell it to Edward Maynard in 1865. Maynard later sold the house to Alfrederick Smith Hatch (1829-1904), in whose family much of the furniture descended. Photo copies of correspondence between Davis scholar Jane B. Davies (1913-2000) and several of the Hatch descendants are available to purchasers. Sources: Jane B. Davies, “Gothic revival furniture designs of Alexander J. We will require proof of identification and residence and may require a credit card and/or a bank reference. By registering for the sale, the buyer acknowledges that he or she has read, understood and accepted Freeman’s Terms and Conditions of Sale.

On the internet A fully-illustrated catalogue is available on-line at www.freemansauction.com. Registered bidders may leave absentee bids through the website and will receive email confirmation of their bid. Freeman’s is not responsible for errors or failure to execute bids. Payment Payment is due within ten (10) working days of the sale. Lots purchased will not be released until we have received full payment. Payment may be made in cash, by check, money order, or debit card. Payments by check must clear the bank before goods will be released.

Buyer’s Premium A Buyer’s Premium will be added to the successful bid price and is payable by the buyer as part of the total purchase price. The Buyer’s Premium shall be: 25% on the first $200,000 of the hammer price of each lot, 20% on the portion from $200,001 through $3,000,000, and 12% thereafter.

Removal of Purchases Deliveries will not be made during the time of the sale unless otherwise indicated by the auctioneer. All items must be paid for and removed within ten (10) working days of the sale. Purchases not so removed may be turned over to a licensed warehouse at the expense and risk of the purchaser.

Sales Tax All items in the catalogue are subject to the 8% Pennsylvania and Philadelphia sales tax. Dealers purchasing for resale must register their tax numbers on current PA forms. Forms should be submitted to our Client Services office on the second floor.

Shipping and Packing Responsibility for packing, shipping and insurance shall be exclusively that of the purchaser. Upon request, Freeman’s will provide the purchaser with names of professional packers and shippers known to us.

Catalogue Descriptions All item descriptions, dimensions and estimates are provided for guidance only. It is the buyer’s responsibility to inspect all lots prior to bidding to ensure that the condition is to their satisfaction. If potential buyers are unable to inspect lots in person, our specialists will be happy to prepare detailed Condition Reports on individual lots as quickly as possible. These are for guidance only, and all lots will be sold “as is” as per our Terms and Conditions of Sale.

Endangered Species Lots marked * are manufactured in whole or in part of restricted materials that may include tortoiseshell, ivory, mother-of-pearl, coral, rhinoceros horn, whalebone or marine ivory. Such materials may require specific licenses, certificates, or CITES documentation for import, export, moving between states in the U.S., or resale. Obtaining these documents may require scientific, laboratory or other expert analysis, in order to establish which species or genus the material came from. Freeman’s is unable to provide this information, and the obligation is on the purchaser of a lot containing any of these materials to ensure that they are able to obtain all the necessary or required documents should they need to, prior to bidding on the lot. If proper documentation or licenses etc. cannot be obtained for a purchased lot, the purchaser will still be required to make an on time payment for the lot as per our standard terms and conditions. Freeman’s cataloguing of the lots marked with this symbol * represents the best of our opinion, and the absence of this symbol from any lot description does not form a warranty that the lot will be free from any licensing or certification restrictions.

Bidding At the sale Registered bidders will be assigned a bidder number and given a paddle for use at the sale. Once the first bid has been placed, the auctioneer asks for higher bids in increments determined by the auctioneer. To place your bid, simply raise your paddle until the auctioneer acknowledges you. The auctioneer will not mistake a random gesture for a bid. By phone A limited number of telephone lines are available for bidding by phone through a Freeman’s representative. Phone lines must be reserved in advance. Requests must be submitted no later than 24 hours prior to the scheduled start of the sale. In writing Bid forms are available in the sale room and at the back of the catalogue. These should be submitted in person, by mail or by fax no later than one hour prior to the scheduled start of the sale. The auctioneer will bid on your behalf up to the limit.
