F

rom fashion to theater, music to dance, Gloria G. Einbender (1930-2017) was a passionate lover and supporter of the arts, especially the visual arts. Born in Kansas

City, Missouri, Gloria moved to New York City at the age of twenty to pursue a career in fashion illustration. It was there that she married her longtime beau, Edwin Einbender. In 1964, the couple relocated to the Philadelphia area where Edwin founded the Honeybee clothing store. Gloria worked closely beside him and together, they produced a fashion catalogue that won accolades in the women’s fashion industry; they later expanded their business from one store to fourteen. The Einbenders returned to New York City in the late 1970s to fully participate in and derive inspiration from the city’s vibrant and diverse cultural offerings. Widowed in 1987, Gloria developed an interest in Folk and Outsider Art at the American Folk Art Museum and shortly thereafter began collecting works by Outsider and self-taught artists, with an emphasis on rural Southern artists. Gloria ultimately returned to Philadelphia, where she filled her Rittenhouse Square home with the brilliant color and exuberance of the collection she built over the course of nearly 30 years.

a profound look into early american life

T

his remarkable collection relating to prominent Quaker families of Philadelphia, Bucks and Chester Counties is comprised of decorative

objects, furniture, and related manuscripts, printed pamphlets, books, journals and correspondence from the 17th to the 20th centuries . Connected by marriage and often through membership in the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, families represented in the collection include Richardson, Sharpless, Haines, Cadwallader, Randolph, Eastburn, Moon, Mendenhall, Newlin, Stackhouse, Taylor and Clark. The material descended to the Moon Family of Bucks County and Virginia, to the present consignor who lovingly organized the manuscripts and preserved the early handwritten notes accompanying the decorative objects. “Nothing brings us home to the contributions made by American families to the fabric of American republic life and continent as intimately—and materially—as this collection,” Freeman’s Vice President and Senior Specialist of Books, Maps & Manuscripts, David Bloom said. “They almost seem to form themselves, over several generations, into archives of inexhaustible cultural and historical and even aesthetic interest. This archive, formed out of more than 200 years of the private (even internal) and public lives of the related Quaker families, is richly representative of this principle.”

The chest was at “Woodbourne” when Jane Haines (1793-1884) married James Burgess Moon (1782-1855) in 1813. note: The frame’s feet appear to be period and doweled. 149 Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860) portrait of george washington (1732-1799) in presidential costume Oil on canvas, framed. 35 in. x 27 7/8 in. (sight) provenance: From the Estate of former Pennsylvania Governor William W. Scranton and First Lady Mary L. Scranton. note: In 1795, Charles Willson Peale arranged for his 17 year-old son, Rembrandt, to accompany him to a portrait sitting with George Washington. Though never fully satisfied with the portrait that resulted from that sitting, Rembrandt used it as a model for replicas. Twenty five years later, after a tour of France and exposure to the neoclassical style, Rembrandt Peale sought to create a new “standard likeness” of Washington, one that expressed the first President’s “mild, thoughtful & dignified, yet firm and energetic Countenance.” In 1823, he created his first “Porthole” painting, showing Washington within a stone oval window. Rembrandt painted numerous replicas of the “Porthole” George Washington, as well as “Porthole” Martha Washington, until the 1850s. $150,000-250,000

272 Carved and painted figure of trapper possibly new jersey, circa 1870 The figure of a man standing on a naturalistically carved base, with arrow quiver at back. H: 62 in. provenance: Property of a Texas Collector. note: Although this figure no longer retains his costume accessories or most of his carved pendants and bosses, it shares numerous characteristics with two iconic Folk Art figures: American Indian Man (1986.65.303) and American Indian Woman (1986.65.384), in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, formerly in the collection of Herbert Waide Hemphill, Jr. (1929-1998). A January 19, 1987, New York Times article, announcing the Smithsonian’s acquisition of the Hemphill Folk Art collection, notes that the figures were used as shop signs in a New Jersey store. This figure’s proportions, his large bellied posture, the treatment of his hands and the pattern of his pendants are almost identical to both of the Hemphill figures, while his facial features are more closely related to those of the Indian Woman. This figure retains a quiver similar to that on the Indian male, and is carved with similar arms, suspenders, protruding ankle bones, shoes, and naturalistically carved circular base. The similarities strongly suggest that this Trapper figure was carved by the same maker as the two Hemphill figures. $30,000-50,000

Endangered Species Lots marked * are manufactured in whole or in part of restricted materials that may include tortoiseshell, ivory, mother-of-pearl, coral, rhinoceros horn, whalebone or marine ivory. Such materials may require specific licenses, certificates, or CITES documentation for import, export, moving between states in the U.S., or resale. Obtaining these documents may require scientific, laboratory or other expert analysis, in order to establish which species or genus the material came from. Freeman’s is unable to provide this information, and the obligation is on the purchaser of a lot containing any of these materials to ensure that they are able to obtain all the necessary or required documents should they need to, prior to bidding on the lot. If proper documentation or licenses etc. cannot be obtained for a purchased lot, the purchaser will still be required to make an on time payment for the lot as per our standard terms and conditions. Freeman’s cataloguing of the lots marked with this symbol * represents the best of our opinion, and the absence of this symbol from any lot description does not form a warranty that the lot will be free from any licensing or certification restrictions.

In writing Bid forms are available in the sale room and at the back of the catalogue. These should be submitted in person, by mail or by fax no later than one hour prior to the scheduled start of the sale. The auctioneer will bid on your behalf up to the limit.
