Th e Art o f Rus s i a n L a c qu e r : Nineteenth Century Masterworks from the Taylor Collection Freeman’s is pleased to offer “The Art of Russian Lacquer: 19th Century Masterworks from the Taylor Collection.” Larry and Mutsue Taylor’s love of Russian lacquer began shortly after their marriage in the late 1960’s, and over the following four decades they became a familiar presence to dealers and auction houses working in exceptional Russian lacquer. Such was the Taylors’ commitment to this material that their California home featured a custom-built gallery for display of the works, and they published a catalogue of the collection which illustrated the artistic character of each object in detail. The Russian fascination with lacquer goods came not from the Russian Empire’s proximity to China, as one would expect, but from Peter the Great himself. The Emperor Peter I had admired western craftsmen who worked in imitation of the precious Chinese material during his tour of Europe, and brought the art by commissioning works in Russia. From the establishment of the Lakovyi Dvor in St. Petersburg, Russian craftsmanship in the field was enriched by the influence of foreign artists who broadened and expanded the Russian lacquer craft and what it would become during the 19th century: Russia’s calling card to the world. By the 19th century, there were two major factories, both outside of Moscow. The Lukutin Factory was established in 1818, when control of the small Korobov workshop passed to Piotr Lukutin. Lukutin expanded production to include tea caddies, album covers, desk accessories, and boxes for many different purposes, and ultimately received the Imperial Warrant for lacquer goods. The other great manufactory was the Vishnyakov & Sons enterprise, founded at Ostashkovo in the 1780’s by Osip Fillipovich Vishnyakov, a former serf freed from the Ostankino estate of the Counts Cheremeteff. Vishnyakov and his sons produced a variety of papier-mâché lacquer ware items including: snuffboxes, tea boxes, eyeglass cases, matchboxes, and Easter eggs. During the 19th century, the subjects of the lacquer studios of Moscow break into several broad themes: the Imperial Family and the Court at St. Petersburg, Views of Old Moscow and ancient Russian Tales, Russian Military themes and the War of 1812, Country life and the peasantry, and, perhaps most interestingly, miniature representations of some of the greatest works of Russian 19th century genre and historical paintings. In examining a lacquer collection of this scale, one is introduced to an entire social history of Imperial Russia.

T he R o m ano vs , t h e C o ur t , an d St . Pet ersburg Lots 1 - 34 The fascination of the Russian Imperial Family with lacquer began with Peter the Great, but it was realized most fully during the reigns of Nicholas I and Alexander II when the lacquer studios were arguably at the height of their artistic creativity. Images of the Emperors and Empresses began to be distributed widely through prints, lithography, and in newspapers and periodicals. This wide-reaching dissemination of the Imperial image had a profound effect on the lacquer artists of the Lukutin and Vishnyakov factories, who were suddenly provided not only with images of formal portraits of all periods, but also informal views of members of the Imperial family traveling (lot 15), engaging in recreational activities like sleighing (lot 14), and with relatives and courtiers (lot 186). Court ceremonial also became a topic for lacquer artists, and the exceptional rendering of Ladurner’s sumptuous view of “Part of the White (Armorial) Hall in the Winter Palace” shows the Russian court at the height of its mid-19th century splendour. The city of St. Petersburg remained an important subject for lacquer artists, though in many cases, they knew the city only from the famous reproductions of Senate Square (lot 33) and St. Isaac’s Cathedral (lot 34). Perhaps the finest lot in this section is the exceptionally rendered miniature Alekseyev’s “View of the Stock Exchange and Admiralty from the Peter and Paul Fortress.” This work by Alekseyev, who was known as “The Russian Canaletto” captures perfectly the bravado of the original at the Tretyakov Gallery, but on a miniature scale.

O ld Mo s c ow an d t h e S k a z k i Lots 35 - 57A When Feodor Grigorievich Solntsev published his seminal Antiquities of the Russian State and began the restoration of many of the rooms and buildings of the Moscow Kremlin, his efforts marked the beginning of Russia’s return to a fascination with its own history and legends. The rise of pan-Slavism established a nationwide interest in and study of Russian historical models, and the Russian lacquer artists of Ostashkovo and Fedoskino were part of this movement with their vivid historical and contemporary images of Moscow and its environs. Historical scenes and images of the Skazki, or fairy tales, began to appear in the midnineteenth century after the publication of Afanisiev’s Russian Fairy Tales (Народные русские сказки), published between 1855 and 1863. Afanasiev was an ethnographer and Slavist, the publisher of nearly 600 Russian fairy and folk tales, one of the largest collections of folklore in the world. These tales were widely read and taught, and the instantly recognizable scenes began to be a major subject for lacquer artists. After the Revolution in 1917, images of Moscow and scenes from the skazki remained almost the only subjects which were still considered appropriate for distribution by the Soviet authority.

T he W a r o f 1 8 1 2 & Th e M i l i t a ry Lots 58 - 87 In the 19th century, the Russian military was an omnipresent force in Russian society. Nicholas I had declared that all members of the army, navy, and civil services were to be in uniform at all times, and as a result Russians were used to streets filled with uniforms and an almost constant display of might and Imperial authority. As a result, military scenes were a topic which was ripe for exploration by the lacquer artists of Lukutin and Vishnyakov. Historical battles, contemporary military scenes, and representations of the army whether at rest or on maneuvers were of interest to buyers of lacquer, and are represented here. The Taylor Collection features an unprecedented number of military subjects, not only of typical nature, but relating specifically to the War of 1812 against Napoleon. Between 1887 and 1912, there was an enormous rise in interest in the War against the French, largely connected to the 75th anniversary celebrations in 1887 (when there were a few veterans left alive who provoked enormous interest from the public), and again during the 100th anniversary celebrations in 1912, to which Nicholas II paid particular attention. Many of the boxes show important scenes from the War of 1812 (lots 59 and 73, for example), images of diplomacy surrounding the war (lot 63), and dramatic miniatures of famous paintings of the period.

T he R u s s i a n L a nd & R u r al L if e Lots 88 - 227 Perhaps the most ubiquitous subject for Russian lacquer boxes are the images of the Russian countryside, peasant life, rural genre scenes, and the ever-present troika rides. The nineteenth century in Russia was defined by the abolition of serfdom in 1861 under Emperor Alexander II “the Tsar-Liberator.” Almost immediately, romantic and nostalgic images of rural life, particularly in the outer reaches of the empire such as White Russia, Little Russia, and the Ukraine, became the most popular subjects for Russian lacquer, both inside the Empire and abroad for export. Even Tiffany & Co. in New York imported Vishnyakov wares, having seen them at the Philadelphia Exhibition of 1876. Whether engaged in ancient traditions such as “casting wreaths” to tell fortunes; riding in sleighs or troikas in the snow; whether off to, working at, returning from, or resting after the harvests; whether flirting, dancing, singing, playing instruments, or drinking tea – the images misrepresent the harsh realities of Russian rural life well into the 20th century. Most of the images on the lacquer boxes of this type were drawn from the prints and lithographs of Ivan Sokolov (Russian 1823-1918) whose scenes were originally published in the Russkie Khudozhestvennyi Listok (‘The Russian Art Journal’). His Harvester’s Farewell and Malorossiyanka (‘Woman from Little Russia’) were copied endlessly, and multiple examples on various types of objects exist in the Taylor Collection.

R u s s i a n 1 9 t h C e nt ur y P a i nt i n gs Lots 228 - 283 It would be fruitless to attempt to describe the range and depth of Russian nineteenth century paintings in this catalogue, but it is easy to see from the breadth of the offered lots from the Taylor Collection that the work of contemporary Russian artists had an important effect on the craftspeople of Ostashkovo and Fedoskino. Repin, Vereshchagin, Morozov, Perov, Sedov, Vasnetsov, and perhaps above all Makovsky were copied and imitated in lacquer reductions. This early form of “art for the masses” was a staple of the houses of Lukutin and Vishnyakov. Many of the boxes trace their subject origins to the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow which opened to the public in 1856 and which was expanded regularly through the 19th century. It is interesting to note the dates of the boxes with the dates of the paintings. Sometimes, a work achieved popularity almost immediately (as in the case of “A Boyar Wedding Feast” of 1883, lots 282 and 283), and in other cases, the work appears to have been executed when the death of an earlier artist caused their life’s work to be evaluated. In other cases, only the “gold medal” winning academy works of certain artists were painted. It has been suggested that these miniatures were a form of “final exam” for the lacquer artists themselves. Perhaps the brilliance of the painters of Vishnyakov and Lukutin are best seen in these works, where in painstaking miniature, the work in pismo po-plotomu (opaque oil painting) captures, often to the smallest detail, the bravado and élan of the original canvases, often massive in scale.

D e c o ra t i v e O b j e c t s & Wo r k s of A rt Lots 284 - 308 In addition to the tea caddies, tobacco boxes, and snuffboxes which were the stock in trade of the Lukutin and Vishnyakov workshops for decades, the late 19th century brought new lacquer forms to explore. The letter folio gradually evolved into the new form of the photo album, and of particular note is the masterpiece album and casket created by the Lukutin Factory in 1903 to commemorate the Russian cruiser “Boyarin” (lot 303). Lacquer techniques began to be used on silver as well as on base metals, making such objects as the kerosene lantern possible (lot 304). Perhaps the most extraordinary pieces in the Taylor collection are the twin icon rondels of St Mikhail and St. Gavril, attributed to the Lukutin factory (lot 308). Carefully mounted into giltwood frames, these icons look to the most distant past of Russian painting, but also hint at the future — after the Revolution, when icon painters were no longer able to work in Communist Russia, many of the best iconographers went to work at the lacquer studios of Fedoskino, developing a whole new school of lacquer painting in the towns of Palekh, Mstsera, and Kholui.
