monochromes

Selections from Asian & Japanese Arts

R

ivaling the expressive and graphic range of early Chinese pottery sculpture are the vast panoply of subtler Chinese monochrome-glazed stonewares and porcelains, collected by connoisseurs for centuries.

It is Freeman’s privilege to offer a range of monochromes from the collection of Dr. Steven K-M Tim and Nancy Tim, Brooklyn, New York. As a collector, Dr. K-M Tim (1937-1998) was drawn to the subtle glazes and elegant forms of Qing dynasty monochromes. Undoubtedly for Dr. Tim, Vice-President for Science, Library and Publication at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, New York, and a noted botanical illustrator, whose work had appeared in the New York Times, the alchemy of the kiln and the magic of a flower’s bloom were directly related. The delicate hues of ephemeral garden leaves and blossoms were mirrored by the mysterious chemical processes at work in the potter’s kiln, with colors and textures developing in a molten state, cooling down to be captured for all time. These alchemical jewels from the Tim collection are joined by a variety of related wares dating from the Song through Qing dynasties from other private collections, to be shared with the next generation of enthusiasts.
