FINE PAIR OF ZITAN ARMCHAIRS
LATE QING dYNASTY
晚清 紫檀西洋花卉紋扶椅一對
each ornately carved in the Rococo style with European influenced lotus, the vase shaped back splats surmounted by shaped crest rail with fan shaped crestings, the scroll arms supported by acanthus-form pilasters, above rectangular solid seats, with scroll and ruyi head carved apron, raised on four cabriole legs, united by plain peripheral stretcher (2) 68cm wide, 114cm high, 52cm deep Provenance: Private Scottish Collection.
Note: The present pair of chairs exemplifies the influence of Western cabinet-making techniques and decorative motifs on Chinese furniture during the Qing dynasty. Beginning in the early Qing
dynasty, foreign tradesmen and firms brought European-made items and built trading houses in European styles in China. At the same time, the Jesuits arrived in Beijing and entered the Emperor’s service as court artists. They not only produced western-designed objects but also influenced architectural design, the most prominent example being the Chang Chun Yuan (Garden of Everlasting Spring) in the Summer Palace. As a result of such commercial and cultural exchange, European-
Illustration of a similar chair from Tian Jiaqing: Classic Chinese Furniture of the Qing Dynasty, p. 42, pl. 26.
influenced decorative arts objects, in particular furniture, began to appear in and outside the imperial court.
The architectural crest of the two chairs and the Westernized lotus and acanthus motifs of the surface carving are all drawn from the repertoire of Rococo art. The fanned lappet-shaped headrest surmounting the crest-rail clearly resembles a shell, another typical Rocaille motif. These motifs remind one of the identical carved decorations on the European-style complex of buildings in the Garden of Everlasting Spring. We can only imagine what the furniture looked like in the series of palaces, pavilions and terraces of the Yuanmingyuan as it is now only a place of memories. These ornate, pseudo-Rococo designs satisfied the self-indulgent taste of the royal household. For similar examples see Tian Jiaqing: Classic Chinese Furniture of the Qing Dynasty, p. 42, pl. 26 (see illustration above); a similar chair from the Qing Court, is in Treasure of the Ming and Qing Dynasty Palace Furniture, Vol. 1, Beijing, 2007, pl. 18 and another Western influenced chair, pl. 88; Sotheby’s New York, Collection of Lt. Col. Robert Gray Peck, 19th March 2014, lot 400; Christie’s Hong Kong, 2nd December 2008, lot 2508. HK$340,000-560,000 UK£30,000-45,000 |

RARE PAIR OF ZITAN AND REVERSE-PAINTED GLASS HANGING LANTERNS QING dYNASTY, 18TH/19TH CENTURY
清十八/十九世紀 紫檀玻璃彩繪人物圖四方燈
each exquisitely made of square section with a waisted top and a waisted stand, carved overall in delicate pierce-work with auspicious motifs including lotus flowers, cloud-heads, ruyi and symmetrically arranged scrolls, the centre section with lattice borders framing four inset glass panels reverse-painted with immortals, Chinese boys and foreigners within landscape settings (2) 52cm high
Provenance: Yester House, East Lothian, Scotland; formerly in the collection
of the Italian-American composer and librettist Gian Carlo Menotti (1911-2007), possibly acquired by the previous owner of Yester House, The Marquess of Tweeddale. Menotti won the Pulitzer Prize twice, for The Consul (1950) and for The Saint of Bleecker Street (1955). He founded the noted Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of the Two Worlds) in Spoleto in 1958 and its American counterpart, Spoleto Festival USA, in 1977. In 1986, he commenced a Melbourne Spoleto Festival in Australia. In 1974, Menotti, persuaded by the fine acoustics of the main room, purchased Yester House, in the village of Gifford, East Lothian, in Scotland.
Note: Zitan framed lanterns made use of this precious timber left over from the making of larger pieces of furniture. Detailed with elaborate carving and delicately pierced lattice borders, they are comparable to the architectural latticework found on doors, windows and balustrades of traditional Chinese Palaces. Translucent glass panels are inset into their frames and it is known that in the middle of the Qing dynasty glass replaced paper or silk in windows, so it is highly probable that glass also began to be used in lanterns at that time. In addition to the fine carvings, elaborate pierce-work and pleasant spacing of the design elements, this pair of Zitan lanterns have a metal receptacle plate with a central pierced hole into which lit candles can be inserted. The dark openwork carving would have been silhouetted against the candlelight in an attractive pattern. Zitan and reverse-painted glass lanterns of similar form, bedecked with streamers and fringes, hang within the imperial wedding chamber in the Palace of Earthly Repose at the Forbidden City, see Wan-go Weng/Yang Boda (1982): The Palace Museum: Peking, Treasures of The Forbidden City. p. 56-57. Also refer to similar Zitan lanterns from the Collection of Robert H. Ellsworth (1929-2014), see Christie’s sale in their New York rooms on 17th March 2015, lot 52. Another comparable pair of lanterns can be found in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, see R.D. Jacobson, & N. HUANGHUALI HORSESHOE-BACK FOLDING ARMCHAIR LATE QING dYNASTY
清晚期 黃花梨交椅
the curved top rail with outscrolling arms, above a pierced carved splat depicting two qilin amongst clouds, surmounted by a further smaller pierced panel carved with a lotus blossom, the slatted seat over a scroll carved frieze, the slender legs united by a foot rest mounted with huangtong plaque, centred by interlaced lozenges 64cm wide, 112cm high, 43cm deep Provenance: Private Scottish Collection.
Note: Originally used only by the Emperors and princes, hunting chairs became popular among high ranking officials in the later period who commissioned these fine portable seats for themselves. These chairs accompanied their owners who often rode ahead on horse-back during hunts while male servants carried them upon their back and followed behind on foot.
23
One of the key features of these chairs is the surface carving. Imbued with traditional Chinese symbols of positive meanings, the chair also indicates the owner’s wealth and status. Running along the façade of the seat are auspicious Chi-dragons, and on the splat are carved fortuitous symbols of good fortune, long life and prosperity which run the gamut from lively qilin (Chinese unicorn), lotus blooms, Buddhist lions among other bears of luck. The hunting chair can be folded with ease, and comes with a handsome attached foot-stool with brass inlay. The brass fittings on the chair lends it a sense of strength whilst providing highlights to the piece. The ageless flowing dense grains of the precious Huanghuali adds greatly to the chair’s grand appeal. For a similar chair, see Christie’s Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art sale in their London rooms on 8th November 2011, lot 273. Note: This pair of armchairs is an excellent and rarely found example known as ‘Southern official’s hat.’ Unlike the Northern type, the ends of the Southern official’s chairs do not protrude. The name ‘official’s hat,’ in Chinese guanmaoyi, derived from the chairs’ resemblance to the winged hat that was part of the formal attire of Ming officials, used exclusively by members of
the elite class. Thus, even today, they are regarded as symbols of status and authority by the Chinese.
These two chairs embody a timelessness in the way they combine linear simplicity with sophistication of detail, loyalty to the traditional canon with a striking sense of modernity. Each is elegantly proportioned, with the narrow top rail supported on gracefully curved rear posts. The S-shaped splat is carved with a delicate ruyi-head medallion. The Huanghuali wood is of an attractive golden yellowish-brown tone with a mesmerizing translucent shimmer. The high-back form of the chairs is typical of the Ming dynasty. With the excellent material and superb craftsmanship, there is no doubt that they are the work of a highly skilled artist and
are of a rare quality.
For similar examples, see Wang Shixiang: Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture, p. 46, pl. A76; Wang Shixiang: Classic Chinese Furniture, p. 90, pl. 48; Christie’s sale in their New York

RARE AND MAGNIFICENT CARVED STONE RELIQUARY TANG DYNASTY
唐 石刻舍利石函
of square section with chamfered corners, each of the four wider sides carved with a niche with bas-relief depictions of Shakyamuni Buddha seated in dhysanasana on a lotus blossom at the centre, flanked by bodhisattvas and disciples standing on lotus bases, the narrower sides incised with floral scrolls 48cm long, 48cm wide, 34.5cm high
Provenance: From the Sze Yuan Tang Collection; acquired in Hong Kong in the 1980s.
Note: With the transmission of Buddhism from India to China, the custom of building pagodas for the sepulchral burial of Buddhist relics also transmigrated to China. The Indian stupa,
which is shaped as an inverted bowl, served as the architectural model for the Chinese pagoda while at the same time coming to adopt Chinese characteristics. Receptacles for Buddhist relics (Sanskrit: sarira) such as the present lot would have been deeply interred in a vaulted crypt in the foundation of pagodas. Among the ones that have been
83
excavated in China, none can be dated before the 5th century. It was between the Northern Dynasties and the Tang Dynasty that the making of Buddhist reliquaries and their burial under pagodas of monasteries flourished. The traditional Chinese Buddhist reliquary is typically a squareshaped stone chest with a chamfered lid. The stone chest however is only the outermost layer in a nest of three to five containers. The reliquary excavated from Dayunsi monastery in Jingchuan, Gansu Province, for example is comprised of four nested containers: a stone casket with a chamfered lid, a gilt bronze casket, a silver sarcophagus, and finally a gold coffin in which a glass bottle containing grains of sarira was found. Of the stone reliquaries known, most are of plain form with the sides uncarved and only the lid inscribed. Stone reliquaries with bas-relief carvings around the sides, typically depicting scenes from the life of Shakyamuni Buddha, are extremely rare. A stone reliquary with bas-relief carving, also from the Tang Dynasty, is mentioned in P.E.Karetzky: A Scene of the Parinirvana on a Recently Excavated Stone Reliquary of the Tang Dynasty, in East and West, Vol. 38, No. 1/4 (December 1988), pp. 215-230. CHINESE WORKS OF ART
With traces of cobalt evident in the Tang dynasty it is not until the Yuan dynasty that the art of blue and white porcelain became the “most revolutionary technical and decorative innovation of the mongol regime in China, if not the whole of Chinese ceramic History” (m. medley 1969: The Chinese Potter). The Yuan dynasty’s connections with the middle east saw the import of cobalt and spurred the creation of these wares to meet the demands of the middle eastern merchants and subsequently for export. Whilst these merchants provided the stimuli for these types of wares, they were nevertheless painted with Chinese motifs, such as bands of scrolling lotus flowers symbolic of Buddhism. The imported cobalt which was difficult to grind was boldly applied in what is now regarded as an attractive quality of being ‘heaped and piled’, with some
101
cobalt particles frequently seen at the end of each brush stroke. The firing of these new wares took great technical skill to achieve the proper shades of blue by controlling the temperature and reducing effect in the kiln. This skill accompanied by the viscosity of the Yuan glaze prevented the cobalt diffusing, allowing clear, intricate decoration of which this period is renowned (s. J. Vainker 1995: Chinese Pottery and Porcelain: From Prehistory to Present). For a comparable blue and white charger, also from the Yuan Dynasty, see Bonhams’ sale in their Hong Kong rooms on 4th December 2008, lot 216. For another rare blue and white Yuan charger, but with the ‘mandarin ducks’ motif, see Christie’s sale in their Hong Kong rooms on 30th may 2012, lot 4054.
The History of the Thornhill Collection ernest Thornhill lived in Clapham, london and was a British pharmacist registered with the royal Pharmaceutical society from 1890 to 1936. Thornhill is acknowledged as an ardent and knowledgeable collector of asian ceramics, collecting from a number of sources including the renowned firm of Bluett & sons. Few details are known about his personal life, but he nevertheless has made his mark with the philanthropic legacy he left behind him.
in 1926 and in 1933 Thornhill donated six pieces of his collection to the British museum, however it was not until later, during the london Blitz in World War ii, that he sent the remaining 276 pieces to the then North staffordshire Technical College for safekeeping. as a mark of appreciation to the college for their generosity he later bequeathed the entire collection to them for its future study and appreciation. Over time the college merged with a number of institutions to become staffordshire University and the collection has
remained at the University ever since. in the 1970s, Professor Flavia swann, Head of art and Design History at North staffordshire Polytechnic, ensured that the collection was fully catalogued, thanks to funding from the spode Trust. in addition a scholarly paper describing the Collection was published in the Transactions of the Oriental Ceramics society 1983–1984, Vol.48. in keeping with the wishes of mr Thornhill, all the works were displayed at the University until the early 1990s.

The Thornhill stem Cup is an excellent example of its type, which is virtually unseen outside museum collections. The motif of flying dragons was popular in the Yuan dynasty (12711368), but was revived in the Xuande (1425-1435) as can be seen in this case. The fearsome five-clawed dragon flies amongst flames, chasing the eternally flaming pearl, above a sea with crashing waves tipped in white, with rocks seen around the base. The stem Cup is crowned by the elegantly painted six-character reign mark within the cup, and circled by double rings, repeated on the inside and outside rim, and on the foot. This is a truly remarkable and rare piece, of a type not
seen at auction for many years. The reign of the emperor Xuande commenced when the ming dynasty (1368-1644) had been in power for 60 years, and China
(back)
found herself thriving under new leaders. They had a capable and just government, there were no recent wars or natural disasters, and artistic inspiration was allowed to flourish at the
kilns at Jingdezhen in Jiangxi Province. Xuande was a much respected leader, well read and versed in the classics, and a talented artist in his own right. He was fascinated by porcelain and was a keen collector. The word ming translates as brilliant, and this applies to the treasures produced during the reigns of the triumvirate of emperors; Yongle, Xuande and Chenghua. scholars agree that the reign of the Xuande emperor represents the apogee of blue and white ceramic production
during the ming dynasty. The clay was purified several times to produce the whitest and finest porcelain.
CHINESE WORKS OF ART
The wares’ unique qualities include the glaze, which is thick and lustrous, with a buttery softness to it that responds to touch, and a luminosity unsurpassed in later wares. This glaze is untainted by age, and consequently the pieces still give us the same pleasure today as when the emperor Xuande held them in his hands.
Today, The National Palace museum, acknowledged to hold the finest collection in the world, has a collection of over 2,000 various Xuande
pieces. The British museum and The Percival David Foundation collection (now housed in the British museum) also hold a number of interesting Xuande wares including a small number
107
of stem cups. The museum’s collection consists of three similar stem cups, one with a lotus scroll, one with a phoenix in flight and the last with dragons on a blue wave ground.
The Percival David Foundation has a very similar stem cup, but with a Qilin on the cup rather than the flying dragon. an almost identical cup is found in the National Palace museum in Taiwan, although with a meander border circling the foot [see Catalogue of the special exhibition of selected Hsüan-Te imperial Porcelains of the ming Dynasty, National Palace museum, 1998].

well potted with rounded sides resting on a short slightly tapering foot, elaborately painted in soft blue tones with a medallion enclosing a single five-clawed dragon amongst crested waves, his sinuous body with powerful legs and finely detailed scales, surrounded on the cavetto by three striding five-clawed dragons chasing each other amongst ruyi clouds, the exterior decorated with further ruyi clouds and inscribed with a six-character reign mark below a double-ring, the base unglazed 30.1cm diam Provenance:
Private english Collection.
Note: Following the passing of the Chinese emperor Xuande and the empowerment of the empress Dowager as regent, the interregnum period of blank ceramics commenced. With the
implementation of an edict banning the production of blue and white wares, which had flourished in production and use under the emperor Xuande, empress Dowager promoted a new style in ceramics. Following her passing and the succession of Chenghua we encounter not only a revival in the production of blue and white wares but a period where it can be argued that it reached its zenith, as it is considered the main rival to Xuande wares. The earlier pieces, still with the darker imported cobalt remaining from Xuande, show transition into the lighter blues of locally mined cobalt that the period is more known for. The locally mined cobalt was more malleable to prepare and apply, resulting in the replacement of the ‘heaped and piled’ effect to a much softer and even toned greyish blue. Comparatively very few pieces of Chenghua wares bear the reign mark of the period. However, examples such as the present dish with the Chenghua reign mark allow us to understand that it was accorded official approval and intended for imperial use with the dragons all endowed with five claws. For further reading, see D. macintosh (1994): Chinese Blue and White Porcelain. HK$340,000-440,000 UK£30,000-40,000 |

LANGYAO COPPER-RED GLAZED BALUSTER VASE, GUAN YIN PING KANGXI PERIOD
清康熙 郎窯紅釉觀音瓶
the slender baluster body rising from a spreading foot to a waisted cylindrical neck with a flared rim, the exterior covered overall with a copper-red glaze suffused with a network of fine crackle throughout, the interior and the base covered with a crackled ivory-coloured glaze 34.5cm high
Provenance: Private london Collection.
Note: The term langyao (‘lang wares’) derives its name from lang
Tingji, supervisor of the official kilns at Jingdezhen between
1705-1712, who is credited with the revival of monochrome glazes and particularly copper-red glazes. The copper-red colour is often considered the most
challenging to regulate during the firing process as exactly the right conditions are required within the kiln to achieve the rich tones. although copper-red was used successfully in the ming dynasty, particularly during the Xuande period, the copper-red monochrome glazes seen in the Qing dynasty became even more refined and were of an exceptionally even and vibrant tone. The fine glaze and elegant form of the present vase demonstrates the skill of the Chinese potters under lang Tingji. a similar vase of larger size was sold by Christie’s in their london rooms on 13th may 2014, lot 100. FINE FAMILLE ROSE OVOID ‘WU ZI DENG KE’ VASE
DAOGUANG MARK AND OF THE PERIOD
清道光 粉彩松石綠地「五子登科圖」罐
the ovoid body delicately and skilfully enamelled with a young scholar wearing a red robe and a red cap, holding aloft a large helmet and surrounded by four smaller boys leaping with excitement to reach for the helmet, all set within a garden of
rocks and pines, the reverse decorated with a flowering pomegranate branch bearing three fruits, all between turquoise-ground borders containing meandering lotus scrolls, bats and ruyi-heads 19.1cm high
Provenance: Private English Collection.
Note: The subject of five boys fighting for a helmet is a very popular motif in China. Referring to the five boys competing for distinction, the narrative symbolises the blessing for one’s sons to achieve outstanding results in the civil service examinations. Helmet (kui) is a pun for ‘leader’, which also indicates first place in the imperial examination. For related Daoguang vases, but decorated with a ruby ground around the elongated neck and foot, such as one depicting children in a Dragon Boat Race, and another decorated with fruiting pomegranate trees, see The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Porcelains with Cloisonné Enamel Decoration and Famille-Rose Decoration, Hong Kong, 1999, pls.189 and 194. RARE AND IMPORTANT IMPERIAL GILT-BRONZE RITUAL BELL, BIANZHONG MING DYNASTY
明 重要禦製銅鎏金編鍾
finely cast of slightly flattened barrel form, surmounted with a handle in the shape of swirling clouds above two pairs of cranes and phoenix flying amongst clouds on the top, the sides decorated with five bands of alternating bosses and stylised flames between a frieze of dragon-tortoise and phoenix at the top and a frieze of stylised frames at the bottom, each of the wider sides centred by an empty rectangular panel framed with ruyi clouds and raised on a lotus pedestal, each of the narrower sides decorated with a panel containing a five-clawed dragon amongst swirling clouds 27cm high
Provenance: From the collection of an important military family.
141
Note: Known in Chinese as bianzhong, gilt bronze bells were an exclusive and important part of imperial court rituals and ceremonies. In the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), bianzhong were
commonly played during ceremonies at the Temple of Heaven and the Temple of Agriculture, as well as during imperial banquets and state rites. Bells of this type were usually assembled in graduate sets of sixteen, producing twelve different musical tones and four repeated tones of a lower octave. Their respective musical notes were determined by their thickness. As depicted in court paintings, bianzhong would have been suspended in two tiers of eight over tall and elaborate wooden frames. Some of these bells were reputed to have left China during the late 19th and early 20th century. A few of these bells, particularly from the Ming dynasty, have resurfaced at auction over the past decade, including an identical gilt-bronze bell sold at Sotheby’s Paris, 9th June 2010, lot 43. Another similar sample was sold at Freeman’s on 14th March 2015, lot 65. HK$1,700,000-2,700,000 UK£150,000-250,000 | US$220,000-300,000

Please note that Lyon & Turnbull do
not pack, ship or oer export advice. It is the buyer’s responsibility to make all arrangements. EXPORT
The export of any lot from Hong Kong or import into any other country may be subject to one or more export or
import licences being granted. It is the buyer's responsibility to obtain any
relevant export or import licence. The denial of any licence required or delay
in obtaining such licence cannot justify
in making payment of the total amount
you retain all import and export papers, including licences, as in certain
countries you may be required to produce them to governmental authorities.
ENDANgERED SPECIES (Y)
Items made of or incorporating plant or animal material, such as coral, crocodile, ivory, whalebone,
tortoiseshell, etc., irrespective of age or value, may require a licence or
certiďŹ cate prior to exportation and require additional licences or
certiďŹ cates upon importation to any country outside Hong Kong. Please
note that the ability to obtain an export licence or certiďŹ cate does not ensure
the ability to obtain an import licence or certiďŹ cate in another country, and vice versa. For example, it is illegal to
import African elephant ivory into the
United States. Lyon & Turnbull suggests that buyers check with their own
government regarding wildlife import
requirements prior to placing a bid. It is the buyer's responsibility to obtain any export or import licences and/or certiďŹ cates as well as any other
required documentation (please refer to Condition 12 of the Conditions of
Sale (HK464) for Buyers printed in this catalogue).
