Welcome to our first Organ Concert of 2021, being held virtually. We are fortunate to be able to welcome Carl Jackson to inaugurate this year’s Organ Concert series by playing a wonderful selection of pieces on the recently refurbished organ in the Grand Temple. With the Coronavirus restrictions in place we are holding this evening’s concert virtually, however, we are very much looking forward to welcoming visitors back to Freemasons’ Hall for our next organ concert on Thursday, 22nd July 2021 (see page 10 for more details). Completed in 1933 as the Masonic Peace Memorial in memory of over 3,000 Freemasons who died in the First World War, the present Freemasons’ Hall was designed to be both modern and ‘best-of-class’ in its decoration, amenities and furnishings and is considered to be one of the finest art deco buildings in London. For more than eighty years the organ, built by Henry Willis III, the foremost organ-builder of the day, has been an essential part of Masonic ceremonies and central to many concerts and musical events. Although regularly maintained, the organ was not altered during those years until the organ-builders Harrison and Harrison of Durham were asked by the Supreme Grand Chapter of England to refurbish and restore the instrument and to add the new ‘Grand Organ’ division. This has been placed in the matching new case which you can see in the centre of the east wall of the Grand Temple above the console. CARL JACKSON Carl Jackson was born in London and studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Malcolm Hill and Alan Harverson. He also held organ scholarships at the Chapel Royal, Hampton Court Palace and at Downing College, Cambridge where he was a pupil of Peter Hurford. He obtained a postgraduate teaching certificate at Goldsmiths’ College (University of London) before embarking upon a thirty-six-year teaching career, from which he retired in July 2018.
He has held positions at Croydon Parish Church (now Croydon Minster) and St Peter’s, Eaton Square, and has been Director of Music at the Chapel Royal, Hampton Court Palace since 1996. He has appeared regularly on television with its choir and features with them on CDs. He was appointed MVO in the 2012 New Year Honours list.

ROYAL COLLEGE OF ORGANISTS FREEMASONS’ PRIZE The Freemasons’ Prize is awarded to the candidate who scores the most points overall in the examination for the Diploma of Colleague (CRCO). The winner of last year’s Freemasons’ Prize is Miriam Reveley from Ely. Also in 2020, Freemasons’ Bursaries - which go to help pupils with tutors’ fees, travel expenses etc. were awarded to Saleem Nassar, Ben Markovicz, George Baldwin, Hannah Meeks, Stanley Whitmarsh-Hart and Reuben Sturges. Under normal circumstances all the proceeds from the sale of this programme (£2 each) would go to the Royal College of Organists to assist them in their efforts to encourage more young people to play the organ.
