History of Freemasons’ Hall
Freemasons’ Hall itself is a Grade II listed building, an outstanding example of Art Deco architecture and design, which has inspired many of our exclusive ranges of gifts.
There has been a building on the site since 1775, with the current building, opened in 1933, being the third. It was originally dedicated as a peace memorial to honour the thousands of Freemasons who fought in WWI, later being renamed Freemasons’ Hall.
It is the headquarters of the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE), which is the governing body of Freemasonry in England, Wales, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and a number of Districts overseas.
1723 Freemasonry Constitutions
Modern Freemasonry was established 300 years ago when the new constitution was published in 1723. The 1723 Charges, Regulations and Ritual lie at the heart of modern Freemasonry.
This was at a time of great uncertainty, with threats to the new King George I from the Jacobite Rebellion. The constitution aimed to deliver stability and was based on the principles of enlightenment: religious toleration, constitutional government, civic responsibility, meritocracy, and the promotion of the societal and personal advantages that flow from courtesy, charity, education and self-improvement.
The 1723 Constitutions also reworked the Charges and Regulations and adopted a reformulated masonic ritual. The modern masonic values of integrity, friendship, respect and charity are derived from this.

Everything a Mason needs
You can obtain everything that you might need for your time as a mason from our shop, either in person or online. If you cannot find what you need, please don’t hesitate to contact a member of our team who will be delighted to help you.
What you will need and when
For Lodge meetings, the usual dress code is a dark suit, white shirt, black shoes and black (or other suitable) tie. Some Lodges are more formal and require dinner suits.
You will also wear regalia, which is historical and symbolic and has its roots in the use of aprons by ancient stone masons. There are different aprons depending on which level in Freemasonry you have reached, which indicates to other members where you rank in the organisation.
Masons may also wear jewels, which fall into various categories, including: Royal Arch, Past Masters’, Centenary, Founders’ and Charity jewels.
Once you’re a Master Mason
There are three degrees of membership, and you will progress through each at a ceremony:
• First degree – Initiate
• Second degree – Fellow Craft
• Third degree – Master Mason
A Master Mason’s knowledge is not considered complete until he has finished his journey in the four stages of ‘Pure Ancient Masonry’ which also includes the Royal Arch, which you are eligible to join four weeks after becoming a Master Mason.

Our team can advise you what you need and you can order everything either online 24/7 or at the Shop at Freemasons’ Hall:
• Aprons, including vegan options
• Collars and collarettes
