BRITISH EDUCATION AND
GLOBAL EDUCATION -
A LEVEL STUDENTS AGED 16-18

Welcome to Freemen's Global School

Using state-of-the-art technology, originally developed for Harvard University, Freemen’s Global provides an opportunity for ambitious schools across the globe to partner with City of London Freemen’s School to attract and retain high achieving students who wish to study UK qualifications.

They are taught in English through live lessons by Freemen’s UK qualified teachers.

Freemen’s Global ensures those international students studying with us, but attending our partner schools, are supported by expert counselling to achieve their ambitions for entrance to the world’s top universities and beyond.

Students learn in a Freemen’s Global centre within their own school. They join others on a video wall from around the world in small classes taught by Freemen’s Global staff who use the same teaching and learning methods which have made Freemen’s a top 5 UK school.

When students are not working with Freemen’s teachers, they attend activities in their own school, enjoying all of the benefits of in-person school life, such as sport, extra-curricular activities and pastoral care.

Students joining Freemen’s Global become part of an international network of Freemen’s alumni, with access to former pupils from across the world in all fields of work.

Freemen’s Global School has been established to teach GCSEs and A Levels to students attending partner schools around the world.

Advanced Level Learning is particularly suited for students wanting to gain a deep understanding of a subject in which they show a real interest. A love of the subject is very helpful in ensuring success. A Levels offer students the opportunity to play to their strengths.

Keys to a brighter future

A Levels

A Levels – or Advanced Level Learning – are recognised as an academic gold-standard for university entrance in the United Kingdom and the United States. A number of top universities in the Far East, Middle East and across Europe also accept A Levels as evidence of academic ability. A Level candidates are aged 16-18.

Students usually take three A Level courses with many supplementing their chosen programme by completing an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This is an A Level standard standalone qualification, designed to extend a student’s abilities beyond the syllabus and demonstrate to universities their competence in studying at a higher level.

GCSEs

Prior to A Levels, students between the ages of 14-16 frequently prepare by study of an International General Certificate of Education (IGCSE) programme. Students can complete anywhere between eight and ten IGCSE courses, which offer a broad-based knowledge of their chosen subjects. High scores in IGCSEs, followed by top grades at A Level, are impressive qualifications which university admissions tutors acknowledge as superior evidence of a student’s academic abilities. Students can however enter A Level courses without IGCSE support, but with either local evidence of academic ability or by completing successfully entrance examinations set by Freemen’s Global School.

What is the difference between A Levels and the International Baccalaureate?

Advanced Level Learning is particularly suited for students wanting to gain a deep understanding of a subject in which they show a real interest. A love of the subject is very helpful in ensuring success. A Levels offer students the opportunity to play to their strengths.

Some universities require students to have studied a particular subject before admitting them onto an undergraduate course. For example, to study Medicine or Veterinary Science at university level, students will be expected to have achieved a high grade in Advanced Level Sciences and, often, Mathematics. Paradoxically, some undergraduate academic disciplines, such as Law, do not require Advanced Level Learning in that subject.

Counsellors at Freemen’s Global and the local partner school are available to help students and parents make their subject choices.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a more general course with students having to undertake some compulsory subjects and make choices of others.

Our partner schools offer supplementary programmes, such as the development of Critical Thinking, or community service opportunities, which are embedded into the IB but which are additional to the A Level academic studies.

A Levels offer students the opportunity to play to their strengths and their interests.

Preparation for university

We are very experienced and successful at this. Students who study at Freemen’s Global are able to inform universities that they have studied with City of London Freemen’s School.

Year on year, students attending Freemen’s gain entry into Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, the London School of Economics, Durham, Bristol and other members of the ‘Russell Group’ – the top 20 UK universities.

Additionally, many of the US-based Ivy League universities visit our School, looking for scholarship candidates to enter the likes of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT and Stanford. We support their applications and advise on the entry process.

In addition to excellent academic results, students applying through the UK’s University and Colleges

Admission System (UCAS) are required to complete a Personal Statement, aimed at attracting the interest of Admissions Tutors. The content of the UCAS Statement must be evidence-based with students able to demonstrate they have undertaken work experience or related activities relevant to their chosen field of study.

Increasingly, international and UK universities are requiring students to undertake formal interviews. Preparation support for this is provided by Freemen’s Global.

Freemen’s Global offers a full university admissions counselling programme.

@HELLOFREEMENS

Freemen’s Global is not an online set of resources which students follow independently, like a MOOC. Freemen’s Global allows students to connect into our digital immersive learning classroom with our world-class Freemen’s teachers and be taught by them in small groups, situated in their local school, according to the best possible classroom practice.

Live learning

Our teachers offer direct classroom instruction, questioning, assessments and feedback, challenges and homework. Just like a physical classroom, students are sometimes taught as a class and sometimes the teacher works in small groups or even individually.

Students are expected to work hard, complete work to the best of their ability, ask questions to enhance understanding, reflect on material and make improvements based on feedback. Most importantly, students are expected to aim high.

The technology

Students have access to two state-of-the-art technologies. Seated in specially configured classrooms in their own school, they have a PC with their own screen, a set of noise-cancelling headphones and a Laptop or iPad, with stylus, so they can work on a digital exercise and text book through Microsoft’s 365 ‘One Note’ software.

A teacher or support assistant, and technical assistant, is available to help supervise the learning in the local classroom. Their images are life-size on a video-wall located in City of London Freemen’s Digital Immersive Learning Classrooms. On their own PC screen, they have the choice of multiple camera angles to view the lesson and are able to speak directly to the teacher.

The teacher has a number of digital support mechanisms to identify when students wish to speak

or ask questions, break into smaller work groups, or participate in polling. Students can access both their own whiteboard and that of the teacher. When asked to complete an assignment they are directed to use their OneNote, and the teacher is able to comment on the work, request amendments or additions, in real-time as part of the live lesson.

The technology, which was originally developed by X20 Media for Harvard Business School, also includes a mechanism to alert the teacher if the student’s attention has drifted elsewhere on the internet. Behind the scenes, the technology provides further data for the teacher to gauge levels of participation and involvement in the lesson.

Logging into the lesson initially requires a number of security checks to be completed. The technology also has the capacity to amend the bandwidth in the event of connection disruption or interference.

How parents will keep up to date with progress Freemen’s Global will provide regular progress updates to students and parents every half term indicating performance to date plus likely grades in the final assessments. These will take the form of report cards. In addition, parents and guardians will be invited to attend parents’ evenings where they will be able to speak to Freemen’s Global teachers.

The student experience

Advanced Level students attending City of London Freemen’s, based on a our 57-acre site in the Surrey Hills on the outskirts of London, have been using Digital Immersive Learning over recent months. You can hear about their experiences in the video below.
