Experience living independently Our Independent Living Programme offers Upper 6 students the opportunity to experience living independently and managing day-to-day tasks before moving away from home. They will be given the chance to gain skills which will prepare them for life after Freemen’s. Situated at the top of Main House, the Independent Living Suite consists of four bedrooms, three bathrooms (including one accessible one) and a common area – complete with kitchen facilities and a lounge space. This means that eight students can become residents for the week, learning to adapt to life away from home before they leave the School for whatever may come next for them. The entire experience is designed to encourage students to adapt to living independently and to proactively learn skills that will benefit them in adult life.
Independent Living Programme
There will be an expectation on them to do things for themselves, from cooking and cleaning to ensuring they are ready for the school day each morning. There will always be support available, day or night, with a Boarding House tutor residing in a staff room on the same floor overnight.
LEARN, LEAD AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE
There are also clear rules which will need to be followed by the students to ensure their safety and wellbeing during the week’s stay. These include respecting your fellow residents, not allowing visitors in the Independent Living Suite and following the School’s Pupil Code of Conduct and Behavioural Policies. If you would like to apply, please complete the form to express an interest. For more information, please contact Katie Moilliet, Deputy Houseparent katie.moilliet@freemens.org.
Adapt to life away from home HOW DOES IT WORK? Up to eight residents will live in the suite per week, with two in each of the four bedrooms. Bedrooms will be shared by the same sex.
WHEN DOES IT START? The Independent Living Space is available to book from now, with the first residents staying from the week beginning Monday 14 November 2022.
HOW DO I APPLY TO STAY IN THE INDEPENDENT LIVING SPACE? Complete this form to express interest. WHO CAN JOIN THE INDEPENDENT LIVING PROGRAMME? The programme is only open to Upper 6 students. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? It is free to stay in the Independent Living Suite. However, money for the weekly food shop and any other purchases will need to be provided by the resident. We suggest working to a set budget to increase the skills learnt during the experience. WHAT ARE THE RULES FOR RESIDENTS DURING THEIR WEEK IN THE INDEPENDENT LIVING SPACE? There is an A-Z of Independent Living Handbook, which will be shared with all residents before their stay. We expect residents to let us know of their whereabouts when leaving the school site – we will do this using our system called Orah. They will be shown how to use this on the first morning.
