Welcome to Freemen’s

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to City of London Freemen’s School.

Our mission at Freemen’s, is to learn, lead and make a difference and we live and breathe that ethos every day.

Academic excellence is a given, that’s the foundation of any good school and we are firmly rooted in a tradition of achievement. However, good grades and progression to top universities only make up part of the picture here in Ashtead Park. Freemen’s is more than just a school: we are a community built upon over 170 years of history.

As a school community, we want to inspire and nurture our pupils to develop into balanced, compassionate, rounded and unpretentious young people, who will go out into the wider world and leave a lasting impact: young people who can and will make a difference throughout their lives.

With every good wish,

A Joyful Community: where every pupil finds their path

We support every pupil so that they find their path in whatever area of the curriculum or co-curriculum they wish to pursue. We foster in our pupils the confidence, curiosity, independence and wisdom to succeed in the next stage of their life, whether it be preparing for Senior School, Sixth Form or life beyond Ashtead.

For us, it’s about preparing our pupils so that when they finally come to GCSEs and A-Levels, they have the solid foundations to succeed.

The journey from age 7 to 18 is seamless, and without exams to progress through the school, our pupils thrive in an innovative and secure learning environment.

Our pupils achieve high results to pursue their dreams at Russell Group universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, as well as at universities outside of the UK. But we are not an academic hot house. The important thing about being educated at Freemen’s is we want our young people to find a path that’s right for them.

Our staff deliver high quality, stimulating and dynamic lessons, where our pupils are supported and challenged to make excellent progress in their learning. They achieve this by having a passion for their subject, making it interesting and lively and, most importantly, building positive relationships with their pupils, so that every child can flourish.

We use the four pillars of the school: house system, pastoral care, curriculum and co-curriculum to build nine essential traits: self-discipline, resilience, principles, empathy, self-confidence, respect, kindness, compassion and environmental awareness.

As part of the City of London Corporation, our pupils benefit from links with Livery Companies, Guild and The City. There are opportunities through prizes and awards, invitations to unique high-profile events, as well as chances to network and discuss career opportunities.

Our school community engages with the important concepts of service and giving, and this is an integral part of our culture at Freemen’s. We take our responsibility extremely seriously and develop partnerships that benefit both the school and the wider community.

Wellbeing and Pastoral Care

Wellbeing and pastoral care are at the heart of everything we do at Freemen’s. We invest a great deal of curriculum and staff training time to ensure that both our pupils and staff thrive. Collaborating with our pupils, parents, and staff, we continuously define and enhance our approach to wellbeing based on the latest research.

Wellbeing means all of the pupils and staff being able to thrive, not just survive, aspiring to flourish in all aspects of their lives. It is about nurturing a positive sense of self and belonging, developing resilience, having purpose and feeling they can be themselves in a safe and accepting environment.

Our curriculum is thoughtfully developed to equip our young people with the skills they need to overcome life’s hurdles. We have parent, staff and pupil wellbeing working groups which regularly review surveys to identify areas for improvement. Our professional team is trained to spot early signs when our young people may need support, ensuring timely assistance is available. Open communication with parents is also a key aspect of our approach.

Onsite, pupils have access to a School Counsellor, mental health first-aid trained nurses, and our large and competent safeguarding team. Recognising that young people often advocate best for one another,

we train our pupils to become mentors. This not only boosts self-esteem for both the mentor and the mentee but also fosters kindness throughout the school. Many of our Sixth Form are trained in Mental Health First Aid, enabling them to support their peers and younger pupils. We have quiet spaces for pupils to have time away from the hustle and bustle and these are overseen by pupils. We also prioritise our staff’s wellbeing, understanding that a nurturing environment benefits everyone.

Our Continued Professional Learning (CPL) programme focuses on pastoral and SEND needs in the classroom, emphasising the importance of community and mattering. We are proud of our large staff population trained in Mental Health First Aid, ready to spot early warning signs and provide support.

Junior School:

YEARS 3-6

In the Junior School, we embrace the values of Kindness , Honesty , and Fun ; qualities that foster a nurturing and engaging environment for your child to flourish and excel in.

Kindness is the integral thread that holds everything else together. At Freemen’s, our community, from children to parents and teachers, has forged its culture to ensure all are supported, valued, motivated, and working together harmoniously. As we all know, it takes a village to raise a child but it takes kindness to empower young people to aim for the stars.

Honesty, a cornerstone of our ethos, is crucial for personal growth and learning. Encouraging integrity helps our pupils make wise and measured decisions, whilst learning to take responsibility for their actions. These are the qualities of courageous learners, future leaders and great friends.

Finally, fun is an essential part of our school life, ensuring that our activities not only align with our principles of kindness and honesty but are also enjoyable. We believe fun has to be for all. There is always plenty of fun to be had in learning at Freemen’s but not just in the classroom. We pride ourselves on the celebration of the fun in the experience not just the outcome.

Freemen’s is passionate about providing a holistic education that allows every child to find their path, reach and exceed their potential. Our comprehensive and inspiring curriculum ensures that pupils build strong foundations for their academic and pastoral future and their progression into the Senior School. Thus, pupils thrive without the pressure of exams, allowing them to focus on building their stretch zone without unnecessary time spent in their stress zone.

Our purpose-built Junior School provides a safe and stimulating base for your child, complete with bespoke play areas. These curious and confident young people also enjoy access to the wider campus, including our impressive swimming pool, outstanding sports facilities, and exceptional performing arts departments. Our Senior School pupils serve as fantastic role models and mentors, supporting younger pupils during playtimes, co-curricular activities and beyond.

We pride ourselves on our commitment to co-education, fostering a passionately inclusive environment since our founding. With class sizes of around 20 pupils, we welcome children from a diverse range of feeder schools and backgrounds. Each year, we mix classes to ensure that our children are confident in their abilities to forge strong and varied friendships as well as helping new pupils feel integrated and supported from day one. Every new child is paired with a buddy (another pupil who knows the school well) to help them settle in smoothly. We strongly believe that this environment helps the children in these crucial, formative years to develop their skillset, attitude, and resilience to learn, lead and make a difference.

This friendly, grounded and well-run school takes the pressure off getting academically bright children into senior school and seems to have a knack of making challenging work seem fun.”

THE GOOD SCHOOLS GUIDE

Lower Senior School:

YEARS 7-9

Our Lower Senior School is a vibrant and supportive community dedicated to nurturing every pupil through these crucial years of social and emotional growth. We prioritise getting to know each pupil personally, understanding the significance of this formative stage in their lives, and proactively providing the care and support they need.

Our Lower Senior School is designed specifically for pupils in Years 7, 8, and 9. Here, they will have full access to all the resources of the Senior School while benefiting from a secure and nurturing environment. We guide them through age-relevant topics such as adolescence, building friendships, conflict management, social media, and online safety.

Our broad curriculum ensures that by the time our pupils choose their GCSEs, they are equipped to make informed and sensible decisions. They will have developed the study skills and independence required to flourish as they transition to Upper Senior School.

In addition to the curriculum, our pupils participate in regular, bespoke workshops focused on supporting friendships and relationships. They will have numerous opportunities to develop leadership skills, both in academic settings and through extracurricular activities like Enterprise Day and residential trips.

Small form groups allow our dedicated tutors to provide personalised pastoral care. Regular one-to-one sessions enable pupils to reflect on their progress both inside and outside the classroom and offer a safe space to discuss any concerns they may have.

We are committed to fostering a warm and engaging environment where every pupil feels valued and supported.

“Older pupils offer support to the younger ones, mentoring academically and pastorally, to help build their confidence and skills. The school’s leaders have successfully embedded an ethos of respect, kindness and openness across the school.”

ISI REPORT, NOVEMBER 2022

Upper Senior School:

YEARS 10-11

This is a truly exciting time for our pupils as they become more independent and build upon their strong foundations. During these years, they rise to the challenge of exams through self-reflection and by developing essential skills such as self-care and critical thinking.

Friendly was the single most uttered word used to describe the school by pupils, while parents report that their offspring are happy. Kind and non-judgemental, we also heard, with support on tap.”

THE GOOD SCHOOLS GUIDE

In the Upper Senior School, our pupils enjoy their own dedicated space, designed to support them on their journey to GCSEs. We work closely with each pupil to help them understand how to get the best out of themselves, manage important moments, and equip them with the tools they need to flourish. We recognise the importance of balancing academics with personal interests and encourage our pupils to fully engage in the vibrant co-curricular life at Freemen’s.

Years 10 and 11 offer our pupils the chance to focus on the subjects they love while discovering their true passions. With a curriculum that includes 10 subjects, we ensure that all pathways remain open for entry into our Sixth Form.

Our comprehensive PSHE (personal, social, health, and economic) programme brings in expert speakers and arranges workshops to address the everevolving issues our pupils may face. Collaborations with organisations like Beyond Equality and The Rap Project, and inspiring talks from figures such as Laura Bates, founder of the Everyday Sexism Project, and author Laura Dodsworth, enrich our pupils’ learning experiences.

Small form groups and a dedicated tutor team provide personalised guidance through these pivotal years. Each pupil benefits from bespoke one-on-one sessions, tutorial time, and planning sessions, as well as the support of Sixth Form mentors who have previously thrived under the same guidance.

Located in the charming Stable Block, the Upper Senior School offers a common room where pupils can socialise and enjoy some of the privileges that come with being at the top end of the school, while still enjoying the extensive facilities Freemen’s has to offer.

Sixth Form:

YEARS 12-13

Life at Freemen’s Sixth Form is truly special. We focus on so much more than just exceptional academic achievement. Sixth Formers are leaders in our community, and we encourage all our pupils to embrace this opportunity.

We offer remarkable opportunities to develop knowledge, skills and expertise in our pupils’ chosen subjects. We support their choices and encourage independent decision-making. Our aim is to enable them to learn, develop life skills and cultivate a positive mindset that will enable them to go out into the world as confident, empathetic and socially aware adults.

We want our pupils to find the path that’s right for them. Most of our pupils go on to their first-choice university, whether at home or abroad. Our Future Pathways team guide them through the application process in the UK and offer specialist guidance for those wishing to study at Oxbridge, medical schools and abroad. We also offer guidance on apprenticeships, gap years, vocational courses or employment. With interview practice and connections to professionals and alumni, we provide superb in-house careers advice to support all pupils’ aspirations.

To ease the transition to Sixth Form, we provide bridging courses and induction days. Our Independent Living Programme offers the chance to experience living independently (with friends) before leaving home.

Freemen’s Sixth Form experience extends beyond the classroom. We nurture skills through co-curricular activities such as CCF, Duke of Edinburgh, Societies, Clubs, Sport, Drama, Music and Art. There are opportunities to become part of an orchestra, choir or band, star in one of our big school productions or stage manage at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

We also offer opportunities to develop leadership skills, through mentoring, acting as an open event ambassador, leading societies, giving talks and assemblies, fundraising or becoming a school prefect. Our Sixth Form pupils contribute to and shape school policy on important areas such as sustainability, equality and diversity.

My form tutor is amazing. She doesn’t just listen to me, she actively gives me steps that I can take to improve myself and help myself.”

SIXTH FORM STUDENT

Boarding:

YEARS 9-13

The quality of teaching is so good at Freemen’s. I don’t think I would have been able to get to the university I did without Freemen’s.”

ALEXANDRA, FORMER BOARDER

Boarding at Freemen’s is a home away from home, where we create a safe and happy environment for our pupils to learn, achieve excellent exam results, and forge lifelong friendships.

Nestled in the heart of our 57-acre campus, our modern and purpose-built Walbrook House warmly welcomes pupils from Year 9 and above. This inclusive space embraces a diverse community of full and weekly boarders from both the UK and around the globe. Our boarders stay in single or shared rooms, each equipped with a desk, ample storage, and a basin. Each pod, shared with up to ten other pupils, has a bathroom and social area, fostering a sense of community. Additionally, Walbrook boasts spacious open-plan areas with a TV, computer games, a pool table, and board games. There’s also a device-free ‘chill out zone’, a creative hub for arts and crafts, a music practice room, and two kitchens for making snacks.

As a small boarding house, our staff get to know each pupil well, ensuring every boarder benefits from individual attention and care. Our boarding house parents play a pivotal role, building strong relationships with each pupil and cultivating a calm, caring, and supportive family atmosphere. They are always ready to listen, supervise prep, run activities, and ensure that bedtimes are adhered to, focusing entirely on the safety, happiness, and potential of each individual.

Our dedicated graduate assistants are present every day, offering both academic and pastoral support. You can often find them engaging in friendly challenges with pupils at table football, chess, or FIFA!

Whenever our pupils come home to the boarding house, there’s always someone ready to support them, study with them, advise them, and cheer them on. We promote mutual respect, good behaviour, responsibility, and self-discipline while helping them develop independence, integrity, initiative, loyalty, and leadership skills.

House System

Every pupil becomes a member of one of our three vibrant houses: Gresham, Hale, or Whittington. These houses form the heart of our school community, providing a sense of belonging and camaraderie from the very start.

Our fortnightly house assemblies are a highlight, bringing together pupils to celebrate their house’s achievements and embrace the school’s mission: ‘to learn, lead, and make a difference’. These gatherings are not just about recognition but also about fostering unity and school spirit.

In our Senior School and Sixth Form, form groups are organised by house, further strengthening house spirit and sparking friendly competition. Pupils have numerous opportunities to take on leadership roles such as house captains, vice captains, and competition captains. These positions cultivate responsibility and leadership skills, essential for their personal growth.

The excitement of house events is palpable throughout the year. Junior School pupils vie for the prestigious Kemp House Shield, while Senior School pupils compete for the coveted Cockhouse Shield. Our array of annual competitions – from sports and music to drama, art, photography, STEM, debating, and even culinary skills – ensures that every pupil can shine and contribute to their house’s success.

House points are awarded for merits and distinctions each term, adding an extra layer of motivation and achievement. Whether it’s House Chef or House Drill (Combined Cadet Force), every event is eagerly anticipated and fiercely contested, making the end-of-year house cup awards a momentous occasion.

Co-curricular: A World of Opportunities Beyond the Classroom

Our mission is simple: we want every pupil to learn, lead, and make a difference . Our co-curricular programme is key to this vision, offering a wide array of activities that go beyond the academic curriculum to enrich our pupils’ lives.

The co-curricular programme at Freemen’s is a dynamic mix of sports, music, drama, and a variety of elective activities, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) and the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) for senior pupils. Our programme ensures that every pupil finds something that excites and challenges them. We believe in participation, expecting every pupil to engage in at least two activities per week, though many choose to do more.

With around 150 activities each week, there’s something for everyone. From sports team training, drama productions, and music rehearsals to clubs like ballet, debating, fencing, sketching, and photography, our pupils have countless opportunities to develop new skills and discover new passions.

Leadership is a cornerstone of our programme. Senior pupils often assist with activities, providing mentorship and guidance to younger pupils. These roles not only support the Duke of Edinburgh Award but also contribute to the Pupil Leader Accreditation Awards, fostering a sense of responsibility and community.

Our pupils are encouraged to make a difference both within our school and in the wider community. The Eco Committee works tirelessly to promote environmental sustainability, while the CCF plays a pivotal role in school events. Peer mentors and prefects regularly meet to support their peers.

Through our enrichment programme, pupils engage with the local community, visiting care homes, assisting in primary schools, hosting tea parties for the elderly, and cultivating produce in our Bothy garden.

Activities are scheduled before school, at lunchtimes, and after school, with many sports fixtures and special programmes like CCF and DofE expeditions taking place on Saturdays.

Sport at Freemen’s

We are passionate about nurturing a lifelong love of physical activity in our pupils. Sports are integral to life at Freemen’s with most of our pupils participating in organised fixtures. Our extensive sports programme offers a diverse range of activities, allowing pupils to discover and pursue the sports they love.

Our sports facilities include field, track, indoor and outdoor courts, a sports hall, pitches, astroturf, a fitness suite, squash courts, and an award-winning 25m swimming pool. The House System at Freemen’s is deeply integrated with our sports programme, featuring a full schedule of inter-house competitions and challenges throughout the year.

We promote both team and individual sports, encouraging pupils to strive for excellence while emphasising teamwork and sportsmanship. With regular fixtures, tournaments, and inter-house competitions, our pupils have abundant opportunities to compete and develop their skills. Our programme is inclusive, designed to cater to all levels of ability, ensuring that every pupil can enjoy and benefit from sporting activities.

Music at Freemen’s

We firmly believe that music is for everyone. We offer a wide range of musical activities, warmly encouraging all pupils to participate in the vibrant musical life of the school, whether they are beginners or advanced musicians.

Our fully equipped Music School features 4 classrooms, 12 instrumental teaching rooms, a recording studio and a magnificent Recital Hall that seats 250 people.

Beyond the classroom, pupils have the opportunity to learn one or more musical instruments. Those who sing or play an instrument can join various ensembles available throughout the school. We offer choirs, orchestras, brass ensembles, string ensembles, and jazz bands for both beginners and advanced musicians. Additionally, advanced pupils can participate in our extensive Chamber Music

Our Performance Programme provides ample opportunities for pupils to perform in both informal and formal settings. This ranges from our informal Friday Lunchtime Series to choral and orchestral concerts, biennial musicals, House Music Competitions and our end of year finales with the Musical Soirée and Founder’s Day, featuring multiple performances throughout the day.

Drama at Freemen’s

The Drama programme offers an exciting and dynamic environment for pupils to develop their skills as performers. Through a multidisciplinary approach to practical skills, performance opportunities, workshops and the theoretical study of dramatic techniques, pupils are encouraged to explore their creativity and deepen their understanding of the theatre arts. From improvisation to ‘playing the mask’ and script work, pupils gain confidence, learn to collaborate effectively, and refine their ability to express themselves on stage.

Our curriculum is designed to provide pupils with the tools they need to bring diverse and rich texts to life. They engage with a wide range of plays, from classic works by Shakespeare to contemporary pieces that reflect the diversity of voices in today’s world. This exploration not only enhances their performance abilities but also broadens their cultural and historical understanding, nurturing empathy and self expression.

For those with a passion for drama, we offer the opportunity to study the subject at both GCSE and A-Level. These courses delve deeper into the technical and theoretical aspects of drama, including directing, design and analysis and evaluation of live theatre performances. Pupils are encouraged to think critically about the texts they study, develop their own interpretations, and apply the techniques of established theatre practitioners.

Beyond the classroom, pupils have the chance to participate in large-scale musicals and plays, which are a highlight of our school’s calendar. These productions provide a platform for pupils to showcase their talents in acting, musical theatre and in a variety of technical disciplines. In recent years the Freemen’s Drama Department has staged Beautiful Burnout, an outdoor production of Lord of the Flies, Road, A Christmas Carol and Titanic The Musical which was performed at the Leatherhead Theatre. Every two years a cast of Freemen’s Drama students also take a production to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Whether in a leading role, as part of the ensemble or a member of the crew, every pupil contributes to the success of these vibrant performances, making lasting memories and building lifelong transferable skills.
