Michael Jackson was once quoted as saying: “I keep on dancing... and dancing...and dancing, because there is only dance.” Thirteen years ago, a group of Manitobans who love to dance came together, with a fiery passion and a dream to preserve the oriental cultural heritage, came together to establish the Manitoba Great Wall Performing Arts. Five years later, in order to allow more children to experience the love of dance, the Great Wall Dance Academy of Canada opened its welcoming doors. For thirteen years, regardless of the weather, winter or summer, our passion and love for dance has never ceased. Regardless of the difficulties during hard times, our enthusiasm never waned. Perhaps we have yet to achieve what the Tang poem described: “beauty of the dancing Lotus as it spins, carving figures the world has never seen….”. Nor can we perform like the Han dynasty queen “dancing on the giant’s palm until the music ceased”. But who can doubt our love of our art? The greatness of an artist lie not in techniques, but in the heart. Dance is like a record, it provide another form of expression of our lives. Dance is like a roll of film, it sealed our emotions. Dance is like a moment in time; it will leave us with nostalgia. The Manitoba Great Wall Performing Arts has seen thirteen years come and go; and thirteen years is a short time for an art organization. Just like the title of that book of dance, we hope we can “Dance Forever”.

NEW YEAR CARNIVAL

Great Wall Insider

A Chinese New Year show overseas – Winnipeg Stop On Mar 7, 2015, the 1400 seat theatre in the new Regent Casino Event Centre is filled to capacity. The “Chinese New Year Carnival” troupe from China landed in Winnipeg for the first time. 95% of the tickets were sold; the other seats were taken by VIPs. The standing ovation lasted for three minutes, and is proof of the calibre of the performance that night.

Chinese culture, multi-faceted yet unique Chinese calligraphy is considered the deepest hiatus of the Chinese mind. It is also viewed as the ultimate art if one must make a comparison among various forms of art. Performed by the Chongqing Dance troupe, “Capturing the scenery in Ink” has successfully combined elements of Tai Chi, Kung Fu, musical instrument, dizi, to paint a long scroll of watercolour scenery within the time frame of five minutes. The musical ensemble from the China Broadcast Folk Company has invited the Canadian guitarist Vito, and bass Frank, and drummer

10

Roberto to performed the “Charles Er Dashi Dance”. There are no less than a dozen times of applause throughout the piece. The contrast and the mix of instruments from two distinct cultures was captivating. We were all surprised by how these instruments could blend in so perfectly without losing their individual character, in the hands of each instrumentalist. The famous er-hu soloist, Ms. Jiang Ka Mei, has been with the troupe for six years. Her traditional, classical, elegant and grandiose style, and her virtuosity has given a life to each of the pieces she played. Yet the audience can feel she has never lost the sense of Chinese culture within the pieces. Many must still hear the music in their heads after the show. In the show piece, “Horse racing”, the employment of the spiccato, pizzicato and Jete strokes has avidly portrayed the racing horse in the Mongolian Prairies. Also notable are the Tang style “Rhythm of Dance”, the military “Parade of solders for the Chin Emperor” and the acrobatics “Yo-Yo” and “Hand in Hand”, all help made the three hours past in the blink of an eye.

NEW YEAR CARNIVAL

Great Wall Insider

First time in the Prairie Provinces after 6 years Chinese New Year Carnival for the year of the Ram is in Winnipeg for the first time. Yet the China Broadcasting Company has tailormade this show for the Western world. Since 2008, the troupe under this name has travelled six times in North America, with a record of 36 performances in 21 cities. They have appeared before 80,000 audiences. The troupe has grown from 20 performers to over 60 performers today. They first appeared in community halls, and soon filled top theatres designed for mainstream society. The Chinese New Year Carnival is a wonderful cultural bridge between Canada and China. The group has contributed immensely to the exchange of culture between the two countries. “I like Chinese culture. I have been to China before, but I cannot imagine I can see such a show in Winnipeg tonight. The performance was magnificent, specially the acrobatics, which I liked the most”, said Mr. Zac Whiteman, an audience member who was blown away by the caliber of the troupe tonight. According to the China Canadian Cultural Development Association, the realization of the Chinese New Year Carnival to appear on a Winnipeg stage was the hard works of the Manitoba Great Wall Performing Arts. Members of the MB Great Wall Performance Arts left no stone unturned to make this show happen. From transportation

to translation, from food to flight, our members have strived to make this event flawless. The president Mr. Gary Liu affirmed “we have focused on cultural exchange for years and we have never taken our sight off our mandate. We insist on a high caliber Chinese New Year show for Manitobans. After tonight’s show I feel a little more at ease, finally.”

We Change with the times so all can feel at home According to Mr. Jiang Ping, the troupe leader of the show, for 2015, he gathered a small folk instrument ensemble from the China Broadcasting Folk Orchestra, which could perform alone, but can also serve as accompaniment for the Chongqing and Guangdong dance troupe during their dance performances, magic or acrobatics. With the theme of celebration in mind, the performances sought to unify and showcase the esthetics and purity of its Chinese cultural content, without losing sight of the fact that this is going to be presented in front of an international audience. In the end, the Chinese New Year Carnival 2015 is a perfect amalgamation of Chinese music, dance, beauty and form, under the umbrella of the theme to celebrate the coming of Spring.

Greetings received All three levels of government have sent greetings to celebrate the Chinese New Year and included the Premier of Canada, The Right Honorable Stephen Harper; the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, His Honour Philip S. Lee; the Premier of Manitoba, Premier Greg Selinger; the Mayor of Winnipeg, Mayor Brian Bowman; and the Chief Consul from the China Consulate of Toronto, Mr. Bing Xie. Each had only high praise for the contribution of the local Chinese community to the Canadian society at large, and sincerely wished our show a great success.

Nutcraker

Great Wall Insider

Pure Daydream MGWPA Participating in <Nutcracker> performance If the CCTV Chinese New Year Show is considered the highlight of show business in China, Nutcracker is the highlight of the art scene in Winnipeg. This tradition of Nutcracker performance during the Christmas season has taken place for the last 15 years. In the 2014 performance, a new direction was taken — in the dream of the little princess, the Chinese dance is performed by authentic Chinese dancers, and all are members of the Great Wall Dance Academy of Canada. Premiered in 1892, Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker”, “Sleeping Beauty” and “Swan Lake” are the three cornerstones of ballet in the modern world. These are the most pure dreams Tchaikovsky left for the world to ponder. In the past 130 years, “Nutcracker” has been re-choreographed numerous times, with new sets, costumes and more. The music remains the same nonetheless; the captivating tunes by Tchaikovsky never lose its touch with the

28

audience over the years. Accepting the invitation from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, dancers of the Great Wall Dance Academy of Canada were honoured to perform the Chinese Dance, one of the dances among the multicultural dances prepared by the Nutcracker Prince for the Princess in the second act of the Ballet. “It was a mixture of excitement and butterflies. I was excited because this is a great chance to show off some Chinese culture and some authentic Chinese dance moves. I was nervous because if I make mistakes, I would forever leave a lacklustre impression for the audience”, as recalled by one of the dancers, Liu Chenxin, describing her mood before going on stage. “Once I am on stage, however, I just kept going, because there is no looking back”. Liu Chenxin is happy she had the opportunity to perform a little solo as well.

After 130 years, the audience is well aware of the story lines of “Nutcracker”. Many of them have shift the attention to the skills of the performers. Dancers of the Great Wall Dance Academy of Canada are ecstatic to have had this chance to perform in front of the Winnipeggers, which may include a subgroup of a very international audience. “This event is a big success for The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and for the Great Wall Dance Academy of Canada. I am grateful to the dancers of our academy. They diligently came to rehearsals after work every day. They had many late dinners and went home late on many nights. Our school simply cannot do without them”, commented Gary Liu, President of Manitoba Great Wall Performing Arts. The performers were Qian Wang, Yang Gao, Vanessa Leung Shing, Carmen Feng and Ivy Hu. There was an interesting moment in a couple performances, when one of the performers

had brought her little daughter on stage during the performance. The mother, Qian Wang, danced in the Chinese dance, and the daughter was a cute little mouse. Qian Wang found herself in awe afterwards. ”This rare opportunity for both of us to perform on stage together is the most memorable moment in our lives thus far. It will be treasured in my memory forever.” The Chinese folk dance and the western ballet speak different languages. The means employed in their artistic expression are like night and day, yet both yearn for a common dream; the dream for perfection in beauty and art. This joint venture proves that there is no clear dividing line between the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Great Wall Dance Academy of Canada. Not everyone is a dancer performer, but that does not preclude each of us from having a vision of a perfect dance or an innocent dream in our psyche.

Great Wall Dance Academy of Canada’s year end recital

Memories of summer are always of ice cream, T-shirts, and music festivals. Summer also has its heavy-hearted moments: mid-terms, finals, and departures. But we shall not equate departure with expiration, for our annual recital is but an annual summary of what took place in the last school year. On June 7, 2015, in the presence of the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, the Hon. Philip S. Lee and her Hon. Anita Lee, students and parents of the entire Great Wall Dance Academy of Canada assembled to celebrate the end of the 201415 school year. This recital was an exhibition of the students’ achievements in dance, and is a welldeserved accolade to all of the teachers’ dedication. The show begins with a speech by the Vice President of Manitoba Great Wall Performing Arts (MGWPA), Rosanna Leung Shing. On behalf of the Board of directors of MGWPA, Rosanna thanked the lead teacher, Yang Gao, who was the professional dance teacher chosen by China’s Office for Oversea Chinese for exchange and directorship, to assist our school’s 2014-15 programs. Rosanna also expressed the delight of the Board in the students’ passion and eagerness to learn this year. Yang Gao recognized the most improved students Vivian Zhao, Kristina Yu, Jacob Anderson, Tianyang Liu, and Jennifer Simcoe. Each had received a certificate commemorating their achievements. This year, our academy has established a new scholarship fund, initiated by our board

member, David Tang. The scholarship recognized one high school graduate of the current year who attended the Great Wall Dance Academy for over five years and excelled in dance and academic achievements. Ivy Hu was the student selected this year to receive this scholarship. The recital program showcased more than the routine Chinese folk dances, traditional dances, ballet and Kung Fu demonstrations. One new attempt was “A dance with My Parent”, where one adult family member was invited on stage to dance with the 3-4 year old child. Another interesting number was the mini-musical, “The night of the cat and mouse game”. This was our first attempt in this style. The rehearsal started only one month beforehand, but this mini-musical had received the loudest applause that day. You must be aware that the musical was a body language interpretation of mind games between the cat and mouse characters. Of special mention, this year the Great Wall Dance Academy has received the highest “Gold Honour” in the 35th Manitoba Dance Festival (May 2015), with the Chinese folk dance “Drizzle memories”. Everyone present at the recital had a hard time parting at the end of the day, but a large number of group pictures were taken before the end of the day. Between departure and reunion, we transcend our emotions into dance, for the sake of dance, through our hearts.

Moon Festival

Great Wall Insider

2015 Mid-Autumn Festival Banquet The moon rises from the sea, heaven and earth sharing this moment Every Mid-Autumn Festival, the sentiment of homesickness prevails. We are hoping to share the moment and unite with our close families. This year on September 25, the Mid-Autumn Festival banquet, organized by Manitoba Great Wall Performing Arts, was held at Kum Koon Garden restaurant in Winnipeg’s Chinatown. We have provided an opportunity for all Manitobans to learn and to celebrate this important Chinese festival.

Frost is white from tonight; the moon is brightest when close to home When we look into the distance of the super moon, our hearts cannot stop but think about our distant relatives. “That is one reason why we hold Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations. I understand there are a lot of overseas Chinese here. I hope this is a chance for all of us to work together, and have a chance to sit down and share each other’s experiences in Canada”, the president of the Manitoba Great Wall Performing Arts, Gary Liu said. In addition to this year’s moon cake and hearty dinner, the former Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba Hon. Philip S. Lee and his wife generously donated $1,000 to support the development of the Great Wall Performing Arts’ activities. Students from the Great Wall Dance Academy also prepared dances for the occasion. The dance “Dancing in the drizzle”, which won the 2015 Manitoba Dance Festival’s highest High Gold honour, helped lift the emotion of the evening to the top.

To meet again despite physical distance Full moon, eating moon cake, dragon dance...however we celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival, we miss our distant family members. When we raised the wine glasses and questioned the moon; we wished for the promise of health and happiness to our family. We longed to see each other many more times, for many years to come, “To meet again despite the physical distance for the moment”. Approximately 400 people joined in the festivities of the evening including former Lieutenant Governor Hon. Philip S. Lee and his wife, Government of Manitoba Minister of Multiculturalism and Literacy Hon. Flor Marcelino, City of Winnipeg Councilor Janice Lukes, and Canadians of Chinese heritage from all walks of life.
