3. Refer to Figure 3 to arrange and sew the squares into columns. Press the odd columns up as shown by the arrow and the even columns down so seam allowances will nest. Make only 2 of the columns marked with an *; make 4 of each of the other columns, and label with the column number as shown.
If you would like to keep all the directional prints right reading when the quilt top is completed, when laying out any squares showing a directional element, make half the columns with the print right-reading and the other half with the print upside-down.
NOTE: Refer to column #1 for the fabric letters for the general order of all the columns. Not all squares are labeled, as the overall order is always the same. The newest fabric will always be added to the bottom of a column, and the oldest will drop off the top. For example, in column #2, drop the Fabric K square at the top and add a Fabric N square at the bottom.
Make 4 of each column except * make only 2 each.

Cutting
WOF = Width of Fabric
HST = Half-square Triangle
QST = Quarter-square Triangle
• Read instructions all the way through before beginning to cut to understand where cut pieces are used and decide how you would like to cut pieces with alternate cutting methods.
• Press fabrics with starch or starch alternative and allow to dry before cutting fabric.
• Fussy-cut pieces will have bias edges so handle carefully to avoid stretching or distorting.
• Cut fabric in order listed, placing pieces with fussy cut motifs first to take advantage of all motifs available, then cut pieces that do not require specific motif placement.
• If desired, mark all pieces to be cut with a removable fabric marker before cutting.
From Fabric A, cut:
(6) 51⁄2" x 51 2" bias squares, centered on your desired motifs
(2) 81⁄4" x 81⁄4", then cut in half on both diagonals to yield 8 QSTs OR follow alternate QST fussy-cutting method at right if you would like to feature mostly background fabric
From Fabric B, cut:
(4) 51⁄2" x 51 2" bias squares, centered on your desired motifs
(4) 81⁄4" x 81⁄4", then cut in half on both diagonals to yield (16) QSTs OR follow alternate QST fussy-cutting method at right if you would like to feature mostly background fabric
(2) 3" x WOF, cut (4) 3" x 131⁄4" (or cut individual rectangles as desired from remaining fabric)
Friendship Bracelet Quilt
Alternate QST Fussy-cutting Method:
Note: If you would like your Fabric A and Fabric B QSTs to show mostly background as in the virtual image, follow this alternate cutting method, rather than cutting squares and then cutting into QSTs:
• On sturdy paper or template plastic, draw an 81⁄4" square, then draw 2 intersecting diagonal lines from corner to corner.
• Cut on the lines and label 1 triangle as your 81⁄4" QST template. Mark a line parallel to the long side of the triangle.
• Use the template to cut the required amount of QSTs from the fabric after other cuts are complete, making sure to keep the marked line parallel to the selvages of the fabric to keep the long edge of the triangle on the more stable lengthwise grain of the fabric.
From Fabrics C, G, I, L, M, Q, Y, AA, and AB, cut from each:
(3) 3" x WOF; subcut
(8) 3" x 131⁄4"
From Fabric D, cut:
(6) 51⁄2" x 51⁄2" bias squares, centered on your desired goldfish motifs
(3) 3" x WOF, subcut
(8) 3" x 131⁄4" (or cut individual rectangles as desired from remaining fabric)
From Fabric E, cut:
(8) 3" x WOF, subcut
(8) 3" x 131⁄4"
(8) 3" x 11"
(8) 3" x 81⁄2"
From Fabric F, fussy cut:
(3) 51⁄2" x 51⁄2" bias squares, centered on your desired bunny motifs

5. Continue adding 3" x 131⁄4" strips as in step 4, using the fabrics listed in the Column Layout diagram (page 10), to make 2 each of A and B Columns, and 1 F Column.
6. Sew 2 Fabric Z 8" HSTs each to the top and bottom of both A Columns as shown in the Column Layout diagram. Repeat to add Fabric R to both B Columns, and Fabric N to the F Column as shown, keeping directional prints oriented right-reading (or in rainbow order) if you cut the HSTs in that manner. Trim the sides of each column even with the raw edges of the QSTs in the Triangle Units, as shown by the blue line. Each column will finish approximately 141⁄2" wide x 99" long including seam allowances.

Quilt Top Assembly
Follow the Quilt Layout diagram (page 11) while assembling the quilt. Press seam allowances towards the Sashing Strips. Measure the Column height before cutting and adding sashing and adjust measurements if necessary to match your measurements.}
7. Sew the Fabric AE 21⁄2" x WOF strips together end to end and cut 2 strips 99" long for vertical sashing. Repeat with the Fabric AF and AG strips.
8. Fold the vertical sashing strips and the Columns in half through the length to find and mark the centers.
9. Matching ends and centers carefully, sew the columns and vertical sashing strips together as shown, making sure columns are oriented with fussy-cut block centers right-reading. Note: The column edges will be on the bias and are easily stretched. For best results, pin the sashing on top of a column, and sew with the sashing on top against the presser foot, and the column on the bottom toward the feed dogs.
Finishing
10. Sew the 21⁄2" Fabric AH bias binding strips together end-to-end. Press seams open. Press the binding strip in half wrong sides together.
11. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing even with the top after quilting is completed.
12. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew the binding to the top of the quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where the loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding right sides together. Trim seam to 1⁄4" and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt.
13. Turn the binding to the back of quilt and hand-stitch in place.

14. Cut and piece the backing to measure 85" x 85". Layer the backing right side down, batting, and quilt top right side up. Quilt or tie as desired.
15. Prepare binding from (9) 2 1⁄2" x WOF Fabric T strips. Sew strips together into one long binding strip. Press strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together.
16. Carefully trim backing and batting even with quilt top.
17. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew binding to top of quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where these two loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding together right sides together. Trim seam to 1⁄4" and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt.
18. Turn binding to back of quilt and blind stitch in place.

Cutting
WOF = Width of Fabric
• Read instructions all the way through before beginning to cut to understand where cut pieces are used and choose your preferred cutting methods.
Fabrics A and B, fussy cut from each:
(5) 51⁄2" bias squares, centered on dog motifs shown or your choice

Instructions
Note: Use a 1⁄4" seam allowance throughout. Sew all pieces with right sides together and raw edges even using matching thread. Press seam allowances open or as directed.
Block Construction
2-at-a-time HST Units
1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner across the wrong side of 2 Fabric M 31⁄2" squares. If you prefer to sew on a marked line, draw a line 1⁄4" away on both sides of the first line. Fig. 1
Paws Out Quilt
3. Sew 2 of Unit 1 together as shown to make a Unit 2a, noting placement of solid fabric and orientation of diagonal seams as shown. Press away from Fabric M. Repeat to make a mirrored Unit 2b (3" x 51⁄2" unfinished). Fig. 3
2. Arrange a marked Fabric M 31⁄2" square right sides together with a Fabric AG 31 2" square. Stitch along outer marked lines (or 1⁄4" away from center line). Cut apart on center line to yield 2 identical halfsquare triangle units. Press. Trim each square to 3" square, keeping diagonal seam centered. Repeat to make a total of 4 M/AG Unit 1.
4. Arrange 1 fussy cut Fabric G bias square, 1 Fabric AG 3" square, Unit 2a, and Unit 2b in 2 rows as shown, making sure the top of the turtle motif is oriented towards the solid fabric square, as indicated by the arrow on the diagrams. Stitch into rows. Press away from Fabric M. Sew rows together to make a block (8" square unfinished). Fig. 4a

5. In the same manner, make a total of 50 blocks referring to the Table (page 8 of the fussy-cut motif is towards the solid square when assembling the block.
When the blocks are assembled in quadrants into the quilt top, the motifs will all radiate outwards to the top, bottom, and sides if constructed in this manner.

Press seam allowances towards the Sashing. Measure the Quilt Center width and height before cutting and adding borders and adjust border measurements if necessary to match your measurements
6. Cut each Fabric D 145⁄8" square in half diagonally twice for side setting triangles (there will be 2 extra). Fig. 5
Paws Out Quilt
8. Group the blocks in a single quadrant as listed on the block table (page 8) and assemble only 1 quadrant at time – this makes it easier to make sure all the blocks are oriented correctly in the finished quilt top. Referring to the Top Quadrant Layout diagram (page 10), arrange only the blocks shown, so that the points (the ‘claws’) are pointing towards the outer edge of the quadrant. Add Fabric W sashing strips, Fabric S cornerstones, and Fabric D side setting triangles in diagonal short rows as shown. As Fabric D is a directional print, and the squares were sub-cut to allow for directional print placement, you can decide at this time whether to place the triangles to keep all the goldfish rightreading (i.e, top, bottom, left, and right), to have them flow around the outer edges of the quilt center, or place them based on the how the individual goldfish look best to you. Fig. 7
7. Cut 1 Fabric D 9" square in half diagonally once and cut second square in half diagonally in half in the opposite direction for corner setting triangles. Fig. 6

9. Sew sashing and cornerstones into diagonal rows and sew blocks and sashing strips into diagonal rows by quadrant. Add the side setting triangles to the outer ends of the block rows, following your chosen directionality. Then sew the sashing rows and block rows together, nesting seam allowances, to complete 1 quadrant.
10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 to assemble the remaining 3 quadrants.
11. Make 2 short sashing rows, each using 6 Fabric S cornerstones and 5 Fabric W sashing strips, and 1 long sashing row using the remaining 11 Fabric S cornerstones and 10 Fabric W sashing strips.
12. Refer to the Quilt Layout diagram (page 12) to join the left side and top quadrants, and the bottom and right side quadrants, using the short sashing rows. Then sew the quilt center halves to opposite sides of the long sashing row. Add the Fabric D 9" corner setting triangles, noting directional placement of the goldfish, to complete the quilt center (701⁄2" x 84" unfinished).
13. Stitch Fabric P 31⁄2" x WOF strips together. Cut 2 borders to length of quilt sides (31⁄2" x 84" unfinished) and sew to right and left sides of quilt. Cut 2 borders to width of quilt with side borders (31⁄2" x 761⁄2" unfinished) and sew to top and bottom of quilt. If you need a bit more length, use the leftover 31⁄2" x WOF strip used to cut squares for Unit 1.
Finishing
14. Sew together the 21⁄2" Fabric X bias binding strips end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press seams open. Press the binding strip in half wrong sides together.
15. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing even with the top after quilting is completed.
17. Turn the binding to the back of quilt and hand-stitch in place.
