DESIGNER SECTION #4

Giuseppe Ribaudo

@giucy_giuce

My block is directly inspired by a project I am working on for Quilter’s Affair for next year. I don’t want to say too much more about it because I believe when you talk too much about an idea its energy dissipates instead of being used toward your project. Suffice it to say I am overwhelmingly excited about what I will be working on up until July of 2024. Val is in no small part responsible for it. I am filled with gratitude.

1. Make Unit 1 using preferred foundation paper piecing technique, or as briefly described here. Fabrics will be arranged on the side of the paper template without markings. Sewing will be done on the side with the marked lines. Stitch along lines and extending 1⁄4" beyond stitching line on both ends.

2. Start by placing a Fabric E 2 1⁄ 2" x 12" piece wrong side down on the Unit 1 template over position 1 (shown in gray). Be sure it covers position 1 completely, and 1⁄4" around for the seam allowance. Fig. 1.

3. Arrange a Fabric J 21⁄2" x 12" piece right sides together with the Fabric E piece. The Fabric J piece will overlap position 2 by only 1⁄4", but once sewn will fold over and cover it completely including a 1⁄4" seam allowance in all directions. Stitch along the line between positions 1 and 2, extending 1⁄4" beyond stitching line on both ends. Fold the paper template away and carefully trim the seam allowance to 1⁄4". Press to the most recently added piece of fabric. Fig. 2

4. Arrange a Fabric E 21⁄2" x 12" piece right sides together with the other fabric pieces. The Fabric E piece will overlap position 3 by only 1⁄4", but once sewn will fold over and cover it completely including a 1⁄4" seam allowance in all directions. Stitch along the line between positions 3 and 1-2 extending 1⁄4" beyond stitching line on both ends. Fold the paper template away and carefully trim the seam allowance to 1⁄4". Press to the most recently added piece of fabric. Fig. 3

5. Continue to add fabrics until Unit 1 is completed. Trim Unit 1 using the outside line around the template (71⁄2" x 101⁄2" unfinished). Use Fabric E 3" x 12" pieces as needed in place of the 21⁄2" x 12" pieces. Fig. 4
