It’s always interesting to work with fabric that is a little outside your standard design aesthetic. It challenges you to find different ways of thinking about color, scale design, etc. I thought a lot about the push and pull of dark and light. Often the worst times in our lives lead to some of the brightest, I wanted the colors to help find that balance.

Unfinished Block Size: 121⁄2" x 121⁄2"

Fabric Requirements:

Fat Sixteenth:

Fabric B Fearless PWVW031.AUBERGINE

Fabric C Illuminate PWVW032.LUSCIOUS

Fabric M Curious PWVW038.PLUM

Fabric N Curious PWVW038.TANGERINE

Fat Quarter:

Fabric H Mindful PWVW037.GOLD

Fabric J Mindful PWVW037.TEAL

Cutting:

Fabrics B, C, M, & N, from each cut:

(2) 31⁄2" squares

Fabrics H & J, from each cut:

(1) 71⁄2" square

(2) 4" squares

(2) 31⁄2" x 61⁄2"

Sewing Instructions:

Note: All seam allowances are 1⁄4". Sew fabrics with right sides together.

1. Draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of all the Fabric H 4" and 71⁄2" squares. Draw 2 lines, 1⁄4" on each side of the first line.

2. Arrange a marked Fabric H 4" square right sides together with a Fabric J 4" square aligning all edges. Stitch on both outside lines. Cut the center line creating 2 units. Trim each to 31⁄2" square. Repeat to make a total of 4 Unit 1. Fig. 1

3. Repeat Step 2 with Fabrics H and J 7-1⁄2" squares. Do not trim. Make 2 Unit 2.

4. Draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of 1 Unit 2. Draw 2 lines, 1⁄4" on each side of the first line. Align both Unit 2 right sides together, alternating Fabric J triangles. Fig. 2

5. Stitch along both outside lines. Cut along the center line. Press units open. Trim to 61⁄2" square. Only 1 Unit 3 will be used. Fig. 3

6. Draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of all Fabrics B, C, M, and N 31⁄2" squares.

7. Arrange a marked Fabric M 31⁄2" square on 1 end of a Fabric H 31⁄2" x 61⁄2" piece. Stitch along marked line. Trim seam allowance to 1⁄4". Press corner out. Repeat on opposite end with a marked Fabric N 31⁄2" square. Make a total of 2 Unit 4 (31⁄2" x 61⁄2" unfinished). Fig. 4

8. In the same manner, make 2 Unit 5 with the fabrics indicated. Fig. 5

9. Arrange 4 Unit 1, 1 Unit 3, and 2 each Units 4 and 5 in 3 rows. Fig. 6 Stitch into rows. Sew rows together to complete Block 5 (121⁄2" square unfinished).
