4. Orient the remaining 16 Small Sash Units so that the outer seams run vertically as shown in Figure 4 a . Pay very close attention to the orientation of the small units in this step – if the units are not oriented correctly, the rows will not fit together correctly when it is time to assemble the quilt top.

Refer to the table below for fabric pairings, placement, and quantity, then sew 3 1⁄4" x 61⁄2" strips to left and right sides of the correctlyoriented units (you should be sewing 2 pieces the same length together, with no seams in the edge of the unit that is to be sewn) to make the Large Sash Units as shown in Figure 4a. Refer to Figure 4b to make reversed units with directional print fabrics, for a total of 16 Large Sash Units, measuring 121⁄2" wide x 61⁄2" high including seam allowances (12" x 6" finished). Label each unit with the number in the table.

Quilt Top Assembly

Note: Follow the Quilt Layout diagram (shown right) while assembling the quilt. Measure the Quilt Center width and height before cutting and adding borders and adjust border measurements if necessary to match your measurements.

5. Referring to the quilt layout diagram for block placement, arrange 4 large columns of 5 Plus Blocks and 4 Large Sash Units as shown. Arrange 3 small columns of 2 Fabric N 31⁄4" x 61⁄2" rectangles, 5 Small Sash Units, oriented with the seams on the left and right sides, and 4 61⁄2" x 12" rectangles as shown, making sure to keep any fussy-cut motifs right-reading.

6. Sew the blocks and Large Sash Units together into the large columns, pressing seams as desired. Sew the N rectangles, Small Sash Units, and 61⁄2" x 12" rectangles together into the small columns. In the small columns, press the seams away from the Small Sash Units so column seams will nest.

7. Sew the columns together, pinning at seam intersections, to complete the quilt center (661⁄2" x 841⁄2").

8. Sew all the Fabric N 21⁄2" x WOF strips together end to end with straight seams into 1 continuous strip. Measure the quilt center vertically through the middle and cut 2 side inner borders to fit (841⁄2" long). Pin, matching ends and centers, then sew to the sides of the quilt center and press. Repeat to measure, cut, and add the 701⁄2" long Fabric N top and bottom inner borders.

9. Refer to the finished quilt image (page 1) to orient the fussy-cut motifs in the Fabric C LOF strips correctly. Trim 2 strips to 105" long for the side outer borders, trim the remaining strips to 87" for the top/bottom outer borders.

10. Mark the centers of the top and bottom edges of the quilt center. Repeat to mark the center along the inner edge of the top and bottom Fabric C outer border strips (this will be the edge towards the feet of the dinosaurs). Pin the top border to the top of the quilt center, matching the centers. Sew, beginning and ending the seam 1⁄4" from the sides of the quilt center. Repeat to add the bottom border. Press the top and bottom borders away from the quilt center. Fig. 5a

11. Repeat the previous step to add the side borders so that the fussy-cut Fabric C print will be oriented as shown on page 1. Fig. 5b

12. Fold the quilt top RST diagonally through a corner, making sure the border seams are aligned from the folded corner outwards. Draw a 45° line extending from the fold on the border piece that is on top, then stitch on the line. Open the corner up to check from the right side that the miter will lay flat when pressed open, then trim seam allowance to 1⁄4". Repeat the process to miter the remaining 3 corners. Press seam allowances open. Fig. 5c

Finishing

13. Sew together the 2 1⁄ 2" Fabric N binding strips end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press seams open. Press the binding strip in half wrong sides together.

14. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing even with the top after quilting is completed.

15. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew the binding to the top of the quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where the loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding right sides together. Trim seam to 1⁄4" and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt.

16. Turn the binding to the back of quilt and hand-stitch in place.
