Helping Young Children Build Their Social Emotional Skills

by Lindsay N. Giroux, M.Ed., with foreword by Mary Louise Hemmeter, Ph.D. An emotion-rich classroom intentionally surrounds children with social emotional learning experiences and supportive interactions. It’s about teaching emotional literacy and vocabulary with explicit lessons, but it’s also about responding when a child is upset, modeling how to cope with frustration, discussing emotions in storybooks, and asking children to share examples of emotions from their own lives. This book provides frameworks for planning and implementing strategies to support emotional development in children.

Lindsay N. Giroux, M.Ed., specializes in coaching preschool teachers on implementing the Pyramid Model to promote social emotional development and prevent challenging behavior. She is currently the Social Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (SEFEL) Coordinator for the Wake County Public School District and a North Carolina Preschool Pyramid Model Expert Coach. Lindsay is a contributing author of Connect4Learning®: The Pre-K Curriculum and the ChooseFi Pre-Kindergarten financial literacy curriculum. She resides in Raleigh, NC.
