Help young children accept no and respect personal boundaries
We Accept No
by Lydia Bowers, illustrated by Isabel Muñoz with song from Peaceful Schools Perfect for read-alouds, the fourth book in the We Say What’s Okay series follows Jamin as he learns to accept his friend’s no and respect her boundaries while learning how to cope with the feelings of rejection. The We Say What’s Okay series continues to build the foundations of consent through stories children find relatable and fun.
But this afternoon, when Jamin leaned in for a great big extra-squeezy hug, Zakiya held out her hands and stopped him. She said, “I don’t want to hug you today, Jamin.”
Jamin shrank back. His face felt hot. He scrunched up his eyes, confused. Zakiya’s mom nudged her toward Jamin. “He looks sad!”
Lydia Bowers is a speaker, consultant, and trainer. After spending almost two decades working directly with children as a classroom teacher, she now teaches families and educators how to talk to children about subjects like gender, reproduction, and abuse. Teach consent in a child-friendly and developmentally appropriate way
Centered on a class of preschoolers, this series helps teach young children the social and emotional skills they need to understand the complexities of consent. Each book covers a consent theme, such as how to recognize the physical sensations that emotions create, look for body language cues, ask for and listen to choices, and know that our bodies have value. With believable, everyday situations and diverse characters, children can see themselves and others reflected in each story—and develop a vocabulary to communicate consent and feelings. Every book in the series is accompanied by a song from Peaceful Schools with downloadable audio files and sheet music.

Jamie’s Class Has Something to Say
A Book About Sharing with Grown-Ups
by Afsaneh Moradian, illustrated by Maria Bogade Jamie is excited for Family Day and all the visitors that will be coming to the classroom. As the class prepares, they share how they feel when adults don’t listen closely enough to what the kids want, need, like, and don’t like or when adults place unfair, often gendered expectations on them. Together, they decide to use their Family Day celebration to help the adults in their lives understand them better.
Jamie was listening to the others and thinking about how Jamie’s mommy listened to what Jamie had to say, even when she didn’t agree. At circle time, Ms. Jones told the class about Jamie’s idea. As a special surprise, they were going to make “This Is Me” posters to share with their visitors that afternoon.
Then Jamie had an idea. “Why don’t we tell them more about ourselves at Family Day?” asked Jamie and went to find Ms. Jones.
