Catholic Tradition M ount de Sales Academy was founded in 1852 for the education of young women by Visitation nuns from Georgetown. As the first Catholic Institution in Baltimore County to offer education to young women of all denominations, Mount de Sales Academy’s earliest students represented nearly all states, as well as several European and Latin American countries. Our school is more than an educational institution; we are a family, rich with legacy, heritage, and deep-seeded Catholic tradition. The Sisters, faculty, staff, and students invite you to take a look at what it means to be a Sailor. 1850 Visitation nuns bought land in Catonsville (76 acres purchased in Mother Mary Cecilia Brooks’ name from William T. Somerville on August 20, 1850 for $5000)
Today, Mount de Sales Academy is administered by the Dominican Sisters of the Saint Cecilia Congregation from Nashville, Tennessee, a community steeped in 150 years of educational experience. Like the Visitation Sisters before them, the Dominican Sisters believe that Catholic education is above all a work of love. Since the arrival of the Nashville Dominican Sisters in 1985, Mount de Sales has experienced tremendous growth and now boasts a current student body of nearly 500 young women. As we reflect on our 160 year history, we are especially grateful for the extensive renovations, building projects, and investments in our physical plant over the past three decades. The focal point and source of strength at Mount de Sales Academy is the St. Francis de Sales Chapel, where Our Lord resides in the Eucharist. Mount de Sales Academy offers opportunities for spiritual growth through Mass, retreats, First Friday Mass, the monthly Sacrament of Reconciliation, other special liturgies, and the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mount de Sales Academy embodies the spirit of St. Francis de Sales and the rich heritage of Catholic education for young women. It is a place where old meets new, where the teachings of Christ take root in the hearts of future leaders, and where the spirit of St. Francis de Sales meets the Dominican charism of charity and truth. Academic Excellence T he first priority at Mount de Sales Academy is the spiritual growth and total formation of each student. Critical thinking skills are fostered in each student and the classroom is a place where knowledge becomes wisdom. In keeping with our mission of Academic Excellence in the Catholic Tradition, academics are the focus of the instructional work at Mount de Sales Academy. The curriculum is college preparatory and carries with it high expectations and a challenging workload. In addition to completing the course requirements for graduation, students must perform community service and attend scheduled retreats during their four years at Mount de Sales Academy. Each student is also expected to complete annual summer reading requirements.

The Sacred Heart Program T he Sacred Heart Program provides academic supports and instruction to meet the specialized needs of collegebound students with identified language-based learning disabilities and ADHD.
DESCRIPTION This program is a four-year program that addresses the individual needs for each of

During this session she will report to a learning support center to meet with program staff for individual and/or small group instruction. Sacred Heart Program staff will construct weekly lesson plans for each student, addressing each student’s individual needs. The focus of this class time will be individualized to each student and will include working on improving academic skills, remediation, assistance with class work, study skills, time management, organizational skills, and test-taking strategies. ACCOMMODATIONS Accommodations provided will be individualized to the needs of each student in
the program. Accommodations include but are not limited to additional time to complete tests and in-class assignments, using a computer for tests or to take notes, oral testing, having a “note buddy,� and preferential seating in each class. All students who have accommodations to allow extended time and oral reading of test sections of the tests should take their tests in the Sacred Heart Center. NEW CONVENT Capital Campaign - Phase I The New Convent at Mount de Sales Academy is home to the Dominican Sisters, who teach and administer at MDSA. After residing in the Gatehouse for 25 years, the convent was completed and dedicated in 2011 and provides the Sisters with a comfortable and safe living facility. Careful planning was key to making sure the Sisters were provided with a home that is functional for their community life.

MDSA is a charter member of the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM).
We have a BRAND NEW ARTIFICIAL TURF ATHLETIC FIELD! It includes a softball diamond - the only of its kind in the Baltimore metro area for high school level softball.
The IAAM is made up of 31 private schools and is one of the top high school athletic conferences in the state.
Construction of the new field, an amazing home for Sailor athletes and the student body as a whole, was made possible by generous donors to Phase II of our Capital Campaign.

The Arts Fine Arts students at Mount de Sales Academy are given the unique opportunity to discover their artistic abilities through a variety of avenues, from the beginner’s level to the most advanced classes. We invite the first-time art, drama, dance, or music student to explore her creativity and then continue to unlock and develop her emerging artistic talents through advanced level art electives. The Fine Arts Department is staffed by experienced artists who bring real-world expertise and passion to the classroom!

Art students are offered an in-depth Foundations class that prepares them to understand basic artistic elements and principles.
Fine Arts students have several opportunities to display their talents. These occasions include musical performances, drama productions, and dance recitals. Throughout the school year, our school hallways are lined with student artwork and continuously updated with new masterpieces.
The Mount de Sales Academy Orchestra and Concert Choir have received national recognition and are often invited to perform at events throughout the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Mount de Sales Academy graduates attend some of the nation’s most outstanding art institutions such as Rhode Island School of Design, Pratt University, and Maryland Institute College of Art.

The Campus Ministry Office in partnership with the Administration gives students the opportunity to serve others inside the Mount de Sales Academy community, in the surrounding region, and beyond our borders through a variety of service projects. Students serve in local soup kitchens, homeless shelters, nursing homes, local schools, and many other venues. Every summer, the week long work camp trip is an exciting event that fosters a dedication to service in many Mount de Sales Academy students, including incoming freshmen and alumnae. Charity is the greatest of all virtues, and we encourage every member of the Mount de Sales Academy community to give of themselves in order to draw closer to the heart of Christ.

Admissions Policy Mount de Sales Academy does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or national and ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policy, athletic, or other schooladministered programs. All acceptances are conditional upon the successful completion of eighth grade. As a condition of acceptance, students may be required to complete remedial summer math and/or reading programs prior to admission. All decisions regarding the acceptance of a student into Mount de Sales Academy are done with the highest emphasis placed on what is in the best interest of the individual girl. Mount de Sales Academy may be able to accept transfer students for admission to grades 10 or 11. Financial Info TUITION
Tuition for the 2012 - 2013 Academic Year is $11,950. A non-refundable deposit of $350 is due with the signed Letter of Intent in order to secure enrollment.
SACRED ♼
The 2012 - 2013 cost of the Sacred Heart Program is $2,500. This amount is in addition to the current tuition of $11,950.
APPLICATION
The $50 application fee is only for new students.
UNIFORMS
Uniforms are purchased from Flynn & O’Hara Uniform Co. Order forms with price information will be mailed with acceptance letters, and may also be obtained from the Admissions Office.
ATHLETICS
The $100 Athletic fee is billed per sport, per student athlete.
BOOK FEE
Includes $175 textbook rental fee plus medal, locks, media and retreat fees as applicable per grade. Consumable books are purchased separately from an online vendor.
GRADUATION
A $185 Graduation fee is billed for all seniors.
FINANCIAL AID
Limited grants are available to students in financial need. Families wishing to be considered for financial aid must annually submit an application, due each February. Contact the Business Office x110 for specific information.

Scholarships funded by Mount de Sales awarded to incoming freshmen based upon the High School Placement Test and specialized skills scholarships such as music and arts. Scholarships sponsored by a Foundation or Fund that are generally awarded to freshmen after qualification via essay or academics. Scholarships and/or tuition assistance from independent sources including parishes and independent foundations.
FATHER DUERR SCHOLARSHIP
ST. CECILIA MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
Those applicants who have the top four scores on the High School Placement Test and are accepted to Mount de Sales are named Duerr Scholars. The highest scorer receives a ½ tuition scholarship for all four years. The second, third, and fourth place scorers receive ¼ of the tuition for all four years. Notification included with acceptance letters.
Named for the patron saint of singers and musicians, two Saint Cecilia Scholarships are given to incoming freshmen each year for excellence in vocal and/or instrumental music. The amount of the award is $500 and may be renewed for each of the four years. An audition is required. Awarded: two $500 scholarships to incoming freshmen.
ST. THOMAS AQUINAS SCHOLARSHIP
Recipients must be recommended for acceptance by the Mount de Sales Academy Admissions Committee. An audition is required. A three minute musical presentation consisting of two contrasting pieces of music that best exemplifies their abilities. An interview to determine the extent of their theoretical background.
This was a new scholarship in 2009, awarded to incoming freshmen based upon scores on the High School Placement Test. Three scholarships are awarded each year in the amount of $1,000 and they are valid for all four years. These girls are also notified with their acceptance letters.
FRA ANGELICO ART SCHOLARSHIP Named for the Dominican artist Blessed Fra Angelico, two visual art scholarships are awarded to incoming freshman each year. Submission of a portfolio is required. No framed work or electronic copies are acceptable. The scholarship is for $500 and may be renewed for each of the four years. Applicants must be recommended for acceptance by the Mount de Sales Academy Admissions Committee. Artwork must be presented neatly in a portfolio or red fiber envelope and organized according to size. The artist’s name, date of work, title (if applicable), and medium of work (e.g.. - water color, pencil), should be noted on the reverse of each entry. The basic qualities considered in evaluating each work of art are commitment, creativity, originality, elements of art, principals of design, and technical skill. Decisions will be based on difficulty of music, dynamic contrast, articulation, intonation, tone, knowledge of theory, confidence, stage presence and experience. Applicants for the Music Scholarships must contact the Admissions Office to schedule an audition.
ST. MARTIN DE PORRES SCHOLARSHIP Dr. and Mrs. Ivan H. Garcia established this scholarship for students of Hispanic ethnicity. Recipients are selected based on essay submissions.
GUARDIANS OF LIFE SCHOLARSHIP The Guardians of Life Scholarship is offered to Catholic young women entering Mount de Sales Academy as freshmen and is renewable for four years if requirements are met. Gerard and Maureen Gallagher P’05, ’09 created the scholarship in 2008 to promote a better understanding of the need for legitimate and non-violent initiatives to protect the unborn and help young women in need.
ST. ANNE SCHOLARSHIP
ALMA KINLEIN MCCORMACK ‘36 & MARION KAYE MCCORMACK ‘72 SCHOLARSHIP
Sister Elizabeth Anne served as Principal of Mount de Sales Academy for six years. Upon her reassignment, members of the Mount de Sales Academy community established this need based scholarship in recognition of the growth and accomplishments of Mount de Sales Academy during Sister Elizabeth Anne’s tenure. A financial aid application is required for consideration.
The McCormack siblings, including Sharon McCormack ’77 who serves on the Board of Trustees, established this scholarship in memory of their mother, Alma Kinlein McCormack of the Class of 1936 and their sister, Marion Kaye McCormack of the Class of 1972. Each year, a rising senior is selected for the scholarship based on how they have demonstrated living strong, traditional Catholic values through achievement in two areas: religious activities participation and religion studies.
KATHRYN THERESA KEARNS SCHOLARSHIP Mr. and Mrs. Louis V. Pugliese established this scholarship in memory of Mr. Pugliese’s mother. Mrs. Kearns was committed to Catholic education and her legacy now benefits Mount de Sales Academy students. A financial aid application is required for consideration.
ANONYMOUS SCHOLARSHIP These scholarships are established for students who exhibit a desire to attend Mount de Sales however, circumstances would otherwise prevent the student from attending. These awards vary with each individual and they are awarded based upon a committee lead by the principal and Board of Trustee members. A financial aid application is required for consideration.
MARLATT SCHOLARSHIP FUND The Scholarship is intended to recognize the significant sacrifices made by teachers and administrators who have accepted God’s call to the ministry of Catholic education by providing financial support in the form of partial academic scholarships. To be eligible the student must be a dependent of a full-time teacher or administrator who has worked for three or more years in a Catholic elementary or high school within the Archdiocese of Baltimore AND entering a Catholic high school as a freshman or be a graduating senior from a Catholic high school entering the University of Maryland College Park as a full-time freshman. ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
KNOTT SCHOLARSHIP FUND
New for the 2013-2014 school year, instead of the half scholarship to one recipient, the Alumnae Association will award a $5000 scholarship to two separate recipients. These scholarships will be open to current students and will be chosen by the Administration of Mount de Sales at the 2013 Honors Assembly. In addition to that, the Alumnae Association will be awarding a Book Scholarship that is also open to all students. The winner of this scholarship will be chosen at random and announced at the 2013 Honors Assembly from a pool of all the student volunteers. Every time a student volunteers for the Alumnae Association, she will be added to the pool!
The Knott Scholarship Fund awards four-year, full-tuition scholarships to Catholic students who test in the 95th percentile or higher on the High School Placement Test. The other required criteria are available at www.knottscholar.org or you may call 410-779-1225. If a student does not meet all stated criteria, she should not apply for a Knott Scholarship.
MARGARET SPICER PIEL ‘49 SCHOLARSHIP

Margaret Spicer Piel, of the Class of 1949, was dedicated to the arts and education. When she passed away, her family established the scholarship in her name and memory to recognize both of these loves. Students are selected based on their art portfolio submissions.
The Board of Trustees and Administration of Mount de Sales Academy are committed to keeping Catholic education as affordable as possible. Families wishing to be considered for need based scholarships or grants must annually submit a financial aid application to the Business Office.

Shadow Days Sign up for your Shadow Day at www.mountdesalesacademy.org/admissions/shadow-day and the Admissions Office will contact you to confirm the appointment. Each prospective student is invited to schedule her Shadow Day between September and December.

Open House All prospective middle school students and their families are invited to join us from noon - 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 4, 2012 for our Open House. Families are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to tour the school and to speak with faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumnae.
