ZERO DARK THIRTY

Written by Mark Boal; directed by Kathryn Bigelow Columbia Pictures • Rated R By Ed Symkus The preview trailers for this slow-moving but gritty and eventually quite intense thriller suggest that it’s all about the 2011 raid that resulted in the killing of Osama bin Laden. Yes, it is about that event, but viewers are going to be disappointed if they go in thinking that it’s an action film, and that’s all it’s about. In fact, the film covers the eight years of often frustrating operations – the story here, after a brief, voices-only, 9/11 intro, begins in 2003 – that led up to the Navy SEALs’ late-night assault on the Pakistani compound where bin Laden was hiding, and apparently still ran his terrorist operation. The title, for those who need to know, refers, in military terminology, to the exact time – half-past midnight – that SEALs stepped off the choppers outside of the compound. But that part of the two-and-a-half-hour film takes up only the last half hour. Those first two hours focus on the CIA operative known here as Maya (Jessica Chastain), who is, in reality, an amalgam of a few agents, but for dramatic reasons is presented as one person. At the film’s start, she’s on her first assignment, just settling in at a CIA black site (OK, let’s just call it a detention center)

•••••••••••••••••••••

in Pakistan, where suspected terrorists are routinely chained up, waterboarded, stuffed in small boxes ... yes, tortured, in order to get information out of them. The sessions are run in a routine manner by another CIA man, Dan (Jason Clarke), who is cold and mostly calm, and just there to do his job – get answers to his questions. But far from the recent claims of U.S. senators, from both sides of the aisle, who claim to have seen the film, and are slamming it for its inaccuracies in portraying what went on at those black sites, the film neither promotes nor celebrates torture. It’s there, all right, and it’s tough to watch, and in a couple of cases (according to the film), it resulted in some solid leads. For the record, the senators – former POW John McCain among them – are demanding that a disclaimer be added to the film. Yet all they had to do was stay for the end credits, which already have exactly what they want, a statement admitting that certain incidents are there for dramatic purpose, and aren’t intended to

www.FREETIME.com •

reflect actual history. The early torture scenes are used here to provide a jumping off point in the telling of Maya’s story. When she first sees what’s going on, she’s appalled; she can’t even look. Later on, she’s one of the people doing the questioning (but not doling out any punishment). Still later, years later, she has transformed from a meek newcomer to a hardened operative – some call her the “agency expert” – on what sometimes seems like a onewoman campaign to hunt down and find and kill bin Laden. But it’s not only her. There are plenty of people around her, many of whom meet their demise during the search, much of which is shown in talky, behind-doors sessions, some of which is out in the field. Years go by, with specific dates and locations flashing up on the screen that will alert students of history about what’s going to happen. Of course, ever yone knows how it’s going to end, and when the familiar-looking compound is finally shown, the slow pace and the endless talking make way for some tense action. The final section of the film is done in real time, and presented in something close to documentary style. The sight from behind green nightvision goggles is creepy, the atmosphere is cramped, the absence of soundtrack music is unner ving. It’s easy to forget everything that led up to this point, and then you’re left with feelings of excitement, exhilaration, and exhaustion.
