Aranka Fabian

Hot Mulligan

Flour City Station | Dec. 28 Aranka Fabian, influenced as much by jazz-rock and jam band traditions as modern electronica and post-rock, hails from Cleveland. Since forming in 1999, the band has performed with the likes of Santana, Umphrey’s McGee and Galactic. Releases include Out of Whack and Interpolation.

The Nashvillebased artist is said to “clearly understand that this kind of music was always about having a great time.” Anything For Love is his latest.

•••••••••••••••••••••

w/Kayak Jones

Nazareth College Arts Center | Dec. 31 The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. Regularly featured on NPR, their song parodies and sketches are up-to-the-minute send-ups of all things political - satirizing issues, events and personalities from both sides of the aisle while providing a nationwide laugh for millions. They have recorded more than two-dozen albums, and have performed for presidents and their constituents alike. Their material is updated constantly, so despite the fact that this is their 21st performance at Nazareth, the show will still be fresh and hilarious.

Thea Vidale

Comedy Cub | Dec. 31 Thea Vidale has appeared at major comedy clubs and starred in her own self-titled ABC sitcom, showcasing her harsh, tell-itthe-way-it-is humor. Her performances are not for the faint of heart with subjects that include racism, sexism, homophobia, relationships, and more.

By Scott Gudell The Jack Neelin Band Girls Will Be Girls (self released CD)

Available at Canalside Jewelers 100 North Main Street &AIRPORT .9 s 585.377.4641

The City of Rochester, as with so many other mid-size cities from coast to coast, has numerous workmen-like artists that continuously create intense, top shelf music. Blues singer and harp player Jack Neelin is one of them and he has finally released a collection of songs he actually recorded in 2013, Girls Will Be Girls. Although Neelin and company chart their own musical course by mixing rock and blues, there are welcome hints of late 60s blues such as music created by British imports like Savoy Brown or east coast titans such as the J Geils Band. The Jack Neelin Band proudl y announces its arrival with a gritty, full force blast of the blues with “Another Night in Paradise.” Other stand out songs include “White Trash Girl” with its nod to ZZ Top’s “Legs,” the slow burner “Just a Memory,” and finally “Child of Sorrow,” which pays homage to the indigenous people of Canada since Neelin traces his heritage back to the native people of that country. Although there are a few songs that could use a bit more punch, the bulk of the songs (all originals) add up to a collection of focused blue collar blues. Rory Block -Blues Walkin’ Like a Man -Hard Luck Child (Stony Point Records) Born in the earl y par t of the twentieth c e n t u r y, h e was exposed to gospel and preaching at an early age, sang country and delta blues in the late twenties and early thirties for Paramount Records and then…disappeared. He was rediscovered in the mid-1960s by passionate blues fans that went

in search of him and he enjoyed a renaissance that included new recordings and performances on world class stages such as at the Newport festival. His name was Son House...and his name was Skip James. Both blues titans’ lives and music careers had these amazing similarities. Noted blues singer and guitarist Ms. Rory Block has dedicated years to honoring blues masters (five and counting so far) by releasing a series of tribute “cover” collections. The first one in Ms. Block’s “Mentor Series,” Blues Walkin’ Like a Man, a tribute to Son House came out in 2008, while the latest, the Skip James tribute Hard Luck Child, was released in 2014. Rochester Music Hall of Fame inductee Son House was fierce and he was focused and his slide guitar was sharp, articulate and piercing. His voice alternated between p o we r ful and moani n g as he drew from a deep well of pent up emotion. Rory Block channels all this and more as she’s accompanied by, well, Rory Block. Her all acoustic approach strips the music to its most basic element. Ultimately, the sound soars. Block kicks off the Skip James tribute with an original biographical song that summarizes the life of James (an element that would have been a great beginning to the Son House disc and others). What follows are brisk and precise renditions of James’ songs. A year or two after James was rediscovered, Cream introduced one of James’ songs, “I’m So Glad,” to millions of passionate rock fans, further solidifying his place in history. Ironically, the series is greatly enhanced by the fact that it’s a woman covering songs originally written and sung by men. It’s all too easy to find hundreds of “men covering men” or “women covering women” on tribute collections, so Ms. Block brings a fresh and distinctive angle to these songs. She mines the essence of the originals yet her unique interpretation can draw out haunting, lconic elements as well as spirited and energized sounds, helping to reveal the soul of the men she met and admired.

beer CRAFT

The Most Wonderful Time of The Beer by Mark Tichenor One of the tenser points of debate in the craft beer community is the industry’s relentless seasonality. It seems that every holiday brings with it a glut of targeted, demographically-appropriate ales. It makes one wonder if the beer industry has seasons at all, or just fiscal quarters. Anyway, the Holidays are no different. Around the middle of October, America’s craft breweries, and Anheuser Busch’s craft breweries, release a deluge of heavy, sweet, often potently spiced winter warmers and Christmas ales. Many of these are little more than marketing gimmicks, often sporting a punny name and label art that depicts Santa Claus behaving in a vaguely inappropriate manner. Still it can’t be denied that holiday ale has some traditional basis, or that the colder, darker months are the perfect time to enjoy heavier, darker beer. Some traditions take holiday beers, or at least the idea of spiced alcoholic ceremonial beverages, all the way back to the vikings, who, when not pillaging and discovering continents, would celebrate the “Jul” season. They took this very seriously; the old Norse parliament even legislated compulsory beer parties at which it was required to have at least three farmers present. That tradition filtered its way through the centuries, mingled with Christianity, and remains an important part of Scandinavian culture to this day; many Danish and Norwegian breweries release special “Julebrygs,” or Christmas brews, that satisfy with a syrupy texture and figlike sweetness. At any rate, this concept was heartily embraced by the pioneers of American craft brewing, and are much loved today.

December December 23, 23, 2015 2015 -- January January 6, 6, 2016 2016 FREETIME FREETIME It’s hard to just blithely toss around holiday beer suggestions. There aren’t any real style-defining guidelines, so it’s impossible to evaluate one against the other. Much of it comes down to personal taste. You would definitely do well to try Rochester’s own Christmas beer: Nice and Naughty Christmas Ale from Naked Dove Brewing. It’s dark and sweet, with coriander notes and a gingerbread quality that evokes memories of that perfect childhood Christmas that your neighbor’s kids always got to have. Nice and Naughty has been brewed every year since Naked Dove opened in 2010, and its November release causes considerable anticipation in the Finger Lakes and Rochester beer communities. There’s generally a line-up at the brewery on release day, and each passing year finds the brewery increasing the size of its annual batch. Great Lakes Christmas Ale also continues to grow its following throughout the Nor theast . It takes a slightl y gentler approach to winter spice, relying on a pronounced malt sweetness for flavor, with the gingerbread and allspice gently tickling your nose. This beer is a point of pride for residents of Cleveland, where the brewery is located. It’s actually claimed that, during the beer’s annual release week, it is the most popular beer in the city of Cleveland, surpassing in sales even the big major beers. Ultimately, holiday ale serves as a welcome treat at the end of a long year, and putting one’s feet up with a glass of something complex, appealing, and warming is one of the pleasures of modern life, and a fine opportunity to reflect on one’s fortunes. Whatever the holiday you celebrate, save a glass for something special. Mark owns a laptop and likes beer.
