She also recieved critical acclaim as a director , before heading off to NYC to perform her award winning solo show Fried Chicken & Latkes at the Actors Temple Theatre. Pryor is a headlining stand-up in her own right. Rain, is not the “drop it’s like it’s hotâ€? kind of comic, no sir. She fills her own shoes where stand-up is concerned and is not trying to be her iconic father Richard Pryor. Her comedy attracts everyone from surburban housewives and their husbands to hardcore comedy fans making them fall in love with her ability to open up her life and talk real talk.

BOBBY COLLINS Bobby Collins is always the funniest guy in the room. With more than 200 stand-up performances around the country each year, he is a show-business institution who has made millions laugh. While other comics have left stand-up behind, Bobby has kept going, preferring the intimacy and energy he finds in live clubs, theaters and casinos. The audience at a Bobby Collins show is half the fun. Many of Bobby’s enthusiastic fans have been following him for years and know by heart some of his classic bits (â€œâ€Śon the inside!â€?). But Bobby keeps it fresh with new observations based on everyday life and his travels around the country. Over the years, he has hosted VH-1’s Stand Up Spotlight and released six comedy CDs, his most recent is I’m On The Boat.

SCREEN

LABOR DAY By Ed Symkus People look forward to certain films for many different reasons. Sometimes it’s the cast, sometimes the director, sometimes because it’s an adaptation of a popular book. You could say that Labor Day fits all three of these, since it’s directed by Jason Reitman, it stars Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin, and it’s an adaptation (by Reitman) of Joyce Maynard’s 2009 bestseller Labor Day. As far as the cast, it’s doubtful that anyone’s going to come up with any negatives. Brolin continues the impressive roll he’s been on for the past few years; Winslet shows how a character arc is supposed to work; and young Gattlin Griffith is completely convincing as someone who is stuck in a dysfunctional family funk just as he’s starting to go through the coming-of-age experience. Most fans of Jason Reitman appreciate him for the quirk factor in his films. The short list of them is an impressive one: Thank You for Smoking, Juno, Up in the Air, and the underappreciated Young Adult. But Labor Day marks his first attempt at relatively straightforward drama, without any of the odd edges that he’s best known for. Then there’s the novel, an elegant, dreamy piece of writing that captures the angst of growing up, the loss of love and the hope for new love, and niftily blends

together moods of humor and pain, along with hints of danger. Well, two and a half out of three ain’t bad: a great cast, a smooth move to "normal" filmmaking, and (here’s the half) a not-totally successful adaptation of a strong book. Set in 1987, the film introduces us to a tight twosome, depressed, silently pining Adele (Winslet) and her loner 13-year-old son Henry (Griffith). They’ve become very close since their dad ran off with his secretary to start a new family. But Adele has decided to deal with the situation by making them real homebodies, meaning they hardly ever leave their house. They’re not hermits; Henry goes to school, and Adele drives Henry to stores to do shopping. But that’s done in bulk, about once a month, and antisocial Adele sits in the car while Henry gets what’s needed. It’s during a rare shopping trip during which both mom and son enter a department store that Henry is approached by a stranger, a man who is quiet and polite, who is non-threatening but a little desperate, who is bleeding. He’s Frank (Brolin), and he’d appreciate some help, like a ride and, it turns out, a place to rest up for “a few hours. The fact that neither Henry nor Adele even blink, but go ahead and bring the guy home, no questions asked, suggests that I might be wrong about that lack of quirkiness. And I might lose all credibility when it turns out that Frank admits he’s an escaped

But except for the fact that his escape is big news on local TV, he was in the hoosegow for murder, and police cars are patrolling the neighborhood, the weirdness of the situation is almost forgotten, almost right away. Those few hours stretch into a day, and then another. Frank and Adele and Henry subtly become a family unit. Frank does some home repairs, and turns out to be quite the cook (a couple of scenes involving food prep are reminiscent of Eat Drink Man Woman); he gives some pitching tips to hopelessly unathletic Henry; and there are quiet talks between him and Adele, the words of which we (and Henry) can’t quite make out. Is Frank the husband/dad they’ve been longing for? Reitman has caught much of the book’s dreaminess, and has managed to put across both the story and the essence of its characters without a lot of dia-

logue. But while it’s a good idea not to dwell on changes made in book-to-movie adaptations, there are going to be questions about what he’s stripped away and what he’s added, as well as why a few ingredients in the book that didn’t work were left in the film. The argument in cases like this is that changes are made to help the film dramatically. That makes sense, but it can be problematic when eerie music takes the place of silence when tension is building. And it can confuse viewers when easily understood plot points are presented as brief glimpses of initially unexplained flashbacks, or when too much drama is added, resulting in unnecessary shock. Yet there are plenty of people who will see this film without having read the book, and it will likely stand on its own with no problem. And even though the climax isn’t exactly satisfying, and feels a little rushed, the coda following it will leave at least some viewers warm, gushy, and teary-eyed.

January 22 - February 5, 2014 FREETIME

VIEW

ROCK OF AGES By Rex Rutkoski Rochester rocks into 2014 with a tasty blast from the past. Keeping the buzz of New Year’s celebrations going a few more weeks is Rock of Ages, taking up residence in the Auditorium Theatre Januar y 30 and 31, for a high-energy, fast-paced immersion into the 1980s. The five-time Tony nominated musical finds a smalltown girl meeting and falling in love with a big-city dreamer in a legendar y rock club in Los Angeles. Their arena rock love story is told against the soundtrack of 28 of the most memorable classic tunes of the decade. It does not surprise Rochester’s Shannon Mullen (in a lead role as Sherrie) that it is being greeted worldwide by enthusiastic audiences. “I’m not surprised at all. This show is smart. Chris D’Arienzo (book writer) wrote such a witty story line that has such a huge heart,” she says. The way that Kristin Hanggi (original director) and Kelly Devine (original choreographer) intertwined the movement of the 80’s with the storytelling is quite clever, she adds. It has an element where the audience is constantly caught off guard, Mullen explains. “Whether it is a certain song that starts playing or a cast member that just appears in the audience, or the best mullet wig you have ever seen, the show keeps topping itself without losing the simplicity of the story,” she says. Some of the comments she hears from the audience: “The show brought back so many memories of my prom!” or “I first heard that song driving my first car when I was 16 years old!” or “OMG-I showed up to college in an outfit that looked JUST like that!” Rock of Ages has an exceedingly loyal fan base. “We have groupies who have seen it sooo many times. One man has seen it over 400 times! My mom has seen it quite a bit too. She’s quite the fan,” she says. Reviewers seem to have been

Shannon Mullen falling all over themselves in “singing” its praises: “Absurdly enjoyable!” (the New York Times)‚ “The most remarkable Broadway experience I’ve ever had” (The Village Voice)‚ “A Must See!” (Spin) ‚“A sexy, feel-good romp!” (NY1) ‚ “More fun than it has any right to be” (Entertainment Weekly). It works its magic over 2 hours and 15 minutes, including a 10minute intermission, as the hits just keep on comin’ from Joan Jett (“I Hate Myself for Loving You”); REO Speedwagon (“Can’t Fight This Feeling”); Jefferson Starship (“We Built this City”); Styx (“Renegade”); Journey (“Don’t Stop Believin’”); Bon Jovi (“Wanted Dead or Alive”); Poison (“Every Rose Has its Thorn”); Foreigner (“I Want to Know What Love Is”); Pat Benatar (“Hit Me with Your Best Shot”) and so many more. Mullen agrees that there is just something about the music of the 1980s that strikes a chord with so many people, even those who were not alive during that time period. “The music is iconic. It brings people back to good memories of their past. This is the time period of trying to stand out and make statements,” she says. “Everything was in a heightened state of reality and people can’t help but

look back with admiration of tha t time . Those who didn’t live through it are fascinated to even believe that i t wa s t h e way it was.” She believes Rock of Ages has the potential to be an evergreen in show business , one of those timeless p ro d u c t i o n s that can run for many years. “I would like to think so. The m u s i c n e ve r gets old and the stor y is funny. It’s a great night out for people and they truly feel immersed in the show,” Mullen explains. It is a story to which many people can rela te , she be-

lieves. “Rock of Ages is all about having a good time, she says. “It’s a simple story line about boy meets girl, boy loses girl, and in the end, on their way to achieving their dreams, they realize what is most important for them in their life,” she says. People should be prepared to laugh‚ a LOT,” she adds. “It is a little show with a big heart that doesn’t take itself too seriously,” she explains. “We break the fourth wall and interact with the audience a lot. She was drawn to the fact that she does not consider it a typical musical “The music never gets old and the story is a lot of fun to tell. I love this role. Sherrie has the sweet naive side to her yet is sexy and confident at the same time,” she says. “There are not a lot of female roles that allow an actress to have the best of both worlds so this role is absolutely perfect for me. I love the comedy in the show and being able to make the audience laugh every night.” She has been with the show for two years. “526 performances later, I still love it as though it is the first time,” Mullen says. She considers herself quite similar to her character of Sher-

rie. “I am a huge dreamer. I have big aspirations for myself and I truly believe that if you want something‚ you’ve got to just take it,” she says. Sherrie, she says, wears her heart on her sleeve. “She is naive, innocent, fun-loving, determined and free spirited. I like everything about this role. She is spunky, funny and of course, sexy!” While in Rochester, she says she learned that all she wanted to do was sing and dance. So she attended Pittsford Sutherland High School’s music program, one of the Top 12 in the nation. She also spent four winters performing with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra at the Eastman School of Music. She earned a bachelor of fine ar ts in musical theater from SUNY, Buffalo. She toured nationally in Legally Blonde (Brooke Wyndham/ dance captain) and Hairspray (Tammy). Mullen says the cast of Rock of Ages brings more to the table than singing, dancing and acting.” Each person plays a critical role in this production and brings his or her own individuality to the show. Everyone is a stand out. I couldn’t possibly say enough about the amount of talent that comes together on stage and off to make this show as amazing as it is,” she says. It is definitely a musical with a stor y to tell, she explains. “However we have a live rock band on stage with us throughout the whole show and we give you authentic 80’s rock style in all of the music. For those that want it to be a concert, they could pretty much interpret it as such if they wanted,” she assures. “The songs are not just sprinkled in at random. They do help to tell the story. Again, it is very smartly put together.” “Don’t Stop Believin’ “ is the song that ever yone waits for, Mullen says, and everyone is on their feet at the end of the show and dancing in the aisles. She adds: “My hope for anyone coming to see Rock of Ages is to not take life too seriously, to truly never stop believing in what makes them happy and to always follow their heart because it won’t ever lead them astray. To never stop believing is the message of our show.” Editor’s Note: Rock of Ages runs January 30-31 at the Auditorium Theatre. For the complete InnerView please go to freetime.com
