20 FREETIME February 4 - February 18, 2015

beer CRAFT

A Rochester Brewery Excursion by Mark Tichenor You can now go on a full fledged brewery tour of Rochester. How cool is that? Five years ago, your tour would have been two stops, hardly worth plunking down the cash for a limo bus. Today, you could visit seven breweries without even leaving the county. If that isn’t progress, I don’t know what is. Let’s take a moment to envision the perfect itinerary. You could start on the west side of town, in Brockport, where the Stoneyard Grill recently took some of their surplus space and went full-on brewpub. It’s the Stoneyard Brewery now, and you can enjoy their house-made beers canalside, which, granted, is way more appealing during the summer months. Currently, Stoneyard features a pale ale, Scottish ale, and coffee stout brewed on-location, as well as a rotating tap list of craft beers from across the country. From Stoneyard, it’s a quick jaunt down the ‘spressway to the brand new Swiftwater Brewing Company, on Mt. Hope Avenue right by the Ford Street Bridge. Swiftwater only opened up a couple of weeks ago, but they’ve already got every ironic mustache in the South Wedge packed into their tasting room. The standout here is the IPA, which punches out strong tropical fruit notes and plenty of hop character, without being astringent or imbalanced. Of course, you can always order a tasting flight which includes a saison, a sour, and the “ThaiPA,” brewed with Thai spices. Next, follow the river north and hop over to Union Street to hit ROC Brewing, perched on the scenic remains of the Inner Loop. ROC has been around for a while now, and owner Chris Spinelli is adapting his business to fit the modern craft beer climate. Last year, he brought in brewer Nick Mesrobian, formerly of Shipyard Brewing and Custom Brewcrafters. Currently, Mesrobian and Spinelli are gutting the brewing area, making room for the imminent arrival of a big 7-barrel brewing system which will dramatically increase their capacity.

Union Street intersects the Public Market, on the other side of which is the Rohrbach Brewing Company’s main facility and tasting room, in a large converted warehouse on Railroad Street. Former brewer Jim McDermott is back at Rohrbach, after a lengthy stint at Genesee, and his beers are as solid as ever. Rohrbach still reigns as the king of craft breweries in Rochester, and their tasting room is a vital part of any excursion to the Public Market. For me, anyway. From Rohrbach, it’s about two miles to the Lost Borough Brewing Company, tucked in behind Sticky Lips BBQ on the corner of Culver and Atlantic. These guys just opened up in November, and they’re settling nicely into the local brewing scene. The one to go for here is the Cream Ale, which doesn’t present like your preconception of what a cream ale should be. It’s got the hop-forward character of a pale ale, with a softer, rounder finish; a dangerous easy-drinker that would deserve a couple pint orders, were we not busy on a brewery tour. If you’re still able to stand, have your designated driver haul you up to Webster and visit Knucklehead Craft Brewing, where owners Len Dunmer and George Cline set up shop in the former Seitz’s Grocery store on the corner of Bay Road and Old Ridge Road. Of the three new breweries to enter Rochester in the past six months, Knucklehead is the strongest across their entire range of beers. Everything in my tasting flight was skillfully made, with no glaring flaws or recipe issues in any of the beers. Next, wind gracefully down to the quaint tasting room of Fairport Brewing Company, unsurprisingly located in the middle of Fairport Village. FBC has been chugging along for a couple of years now, taking a “small is best” approach focusing primarily on in-house retail and taps within the Fairport Village. Owners Tim Garman and Paul Guarracini opened their new tasting room in a converted gas station last year, and really made the place beautiful. Finally, go home. On second thought, with all these breweries, maybe it’s best to tackle the full gamut in two trips for the sake of one’s sanity and liver. Five years ago, you could have accomplished a tour of Rochester’s breweries in an hour. Back then, who would have even thought that Monroe County would one day have too many breweries to visit in a weekend?

DISC

A Little Luck Maria Gillard and Scott Regan By Scott Gudell From dimly lit bars with half empty beer bottles to sunny summer public markets with ripe tomatoes...and hundreds of spots on the map in between...Scott Regan has sung countless songs as part of Watkins and the Rapiers and as a solo artist. He’s also one of the most reliable DJs in the Rochester market as he helms the popular radio show Open Tunings on the NPR-affiliated WRUR 88.5. Maria Gillard, who has a degree in music and teaches at a western New York college, has also performed numerous times in clubs, schools and even nursing homes. The pair recently teamed up to record eight songs and released them on a new CD, A Little Luck. If you’re expecting jaunty, tonguein-cheek songs like Watkins and the Rapiers staples “Monroe Avenue,” “Cheap Motel‚” or “Wilson Farm,” you’ll probably have to wait for another recording that may come somewhere down the road. This CD opens with a laid back after-dinner

back porch sing-along called “Now It’s Gone‚” and sets the tone for an easy going selection of new songs. With the help of Steve Piper, Perry Cleaveland and Brian Williams, the group keeps the mood serene and homey as Maria and Scott both share and alternate vocals. “Blue Ridge Moon” is classic Americana while Maria nails “Jailhouse Baby Jones” with a sad, haunting 1930’s blues style that reveals the darker side of life. Songs like “I Remember You” are delivered as intimate, personal reminiscences that are as conversational as they are musical. This collection is kind of like looking through a shoebox of old photos, revealing snapshots of two sensitive singers who seamlessly complement each other as they offer us eight handcrafted and personal observations. A casual conversation set to music.
