CRAFT

If You Can’t Beat ’Em, Buy ’Em By Mark Tichenor International brewing megasaurus A-B Inbev just revealed its new brand, and it is Blue Point. “Wait a second,” you’re probably saying as you wipe the coffee off your screen. “Blue Point is a small, cuddly craft brewery from Long Island! A-B Inbev, the folks who bring us Budweiser and Stella Artois, have nothing to do with it!” Well it turns out that Blue Point isn’t so tiny anymore, but the notion that it grew to the point where a major global brewing conglomerate would want it seems absurd, until you look at a couple key points. Craft beer, once disregarded by large national breweries, proved to be a major market force. At a time when mainstream beer was losing 2% share every year, the craft share grew by double digits annually. While the big boys repeatedly launched “crafty” brands to try and compete, they never quite grasped the mentality of indie beer’s customers, or the nuances of operating in tiny, disparate regional marketplaces. We beer dorks thought that was just dandy. We’d sit in our posh little gastropubs, chortling into our imperial porter as we watched AB and SABMiller stumble into every gopher hole in the garden trying to compete with the little guy using bikini models and badassery, instead of trying to make awesome beer. Turns out we were not the smartest guys in the room. One thing AB Inbev has is scads of money, and all the time in the world. By Ed Symkus

beer

Nope. Nothing to do with Shakespeare here. That’s called The Winter’s Tale, a story of love and jealousy and infidelity and sheep shearing. Winter’s Tale, based on the 1983 Mark Helprin novel, is solidly set in the realm of fantasy. A quick warning: People with cold hearts need not buy a ticket to this extremely warmhearted movie. Adapted from the book by veteran screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, and directed by him (his debut in that seat), the film provides a brief

www.FREETIME.com •

The bulb began to flicker to life in 2011, when they purchased beloved Chicago brewer Goose Island, with the public assurance that the regional brewery would be left as a standalone, albeit with the benefit of AB’s distribution network. Up until now, the suits have been true to their word. Goose continues to issue forth from its own brewery, but the other shoe could drop at any time. That same promise has been made about the Blue Point sale. Supposedly, nothing will change, not even Hoptical Illusion, far and away Blue Point’s best beer. But it’s clear the megacorp is primarily after the brand and the shelf space. And, ultimately, that is what Blue Point and Goose Island are destined to become, not so much regional points of pride and passion, but examples of IP in a brand portfolio, and powerful competitors to the nation’s independent breweries. Fair enough. That’s business. What’s scary is, the founders of many more of the nation’s most successful craft breweries are approaching retirement age. After busting one’s ass in a hardscrabble business, building from the ground up, Big Beer buyout cash must look awfully tempting; the grandkids need their tuition paid and Boca is beckoning. More breweries are opening every day, but they are tiny operations compared to what could potentially sell to the big players. This could be simply a ripple in a pond, or it could signify a disturbing change in the industry. The craft beer honeymoon may not be over, but we just might be at that part where we’re packing up and heading back to the airport narrated intro that tells us how “we’re all connected,” then settles down to jumping about in time, but not place. The setting is always New York City, but it’s seen at different points in 1895, 1916, and 2014. Most of the story happens in that middle year, where professional thief Peter Lake (Colin Farrell) breaks into houses to get by, but is on the run from someone who’s much further out on the wrong side of the law. At least Peter is human. His adversary, Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe), at first seems to be the head of a New York crime syndicate, always followed by his faithful band of black derby-wearing, gun-toting minions. But he’s revealed to be something more than that ... something less human than Peter.

A clue: Pearly took in the orphaned Peter a long time ago, taught him everything bad that he knew, then freaked out when Peter decided to head out on his own. You just don’t do that to Pearly Soames. Another clue, one about a big difference between the two men, revealed in two pieces of dialogue: Peter proudly mentions to a new acquaintance, “I’m a thief, and a damn good one.” Pearly, in a frightening, whispery voice, tells another, “I love blood on the snow, especially if I spilt the blood.” In short, Pearly is hunting Peter; Peter – really a good man – meets and falls for young, beautiful, wealthy, and dying Beverly (Jessica Brown Findlay); Pearly believes that Peter might be able to work a miracle and

save Beverly. Pearly cannot let this happen. What, you might ask, the heck is going on here? An explanation, without giving too much away: It’s already been established that Peter is a human. Pearly? Why, he’s a demon, and in this story, a demon’s purpose in life is to “blacken souls and crush miracles.” There’s also a certain fellow making sure that Pearly does his job properly. That would be the “man” Pearly casually calls Lou, which is short for Lucifer (Will Smith, quite good, in a role we’ve never seen him do before). The script is filled with lots of talk about life and death, light and dark, love and hate, good and evil, magic and miracles, and spirit guides

American Idiot’s Casey O’Farrell By Scott Gudell I reached out to current American Idiot cast member Casey O’Farrell (via e-mail) as he and the others work their way toward our cold community. So how did Mr. O’Farrell prepare? “I’ve been a fan of the music for sure. Although I never saw the Broadway show, only the first national tour after I booked the job.” While the members of Green Day were certainly aware of other highly charged musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Tommy and, to some extent, Jersey Boys when they were creating their show, there is a distinction between rock operas and juke box musicals according to Mr. O’Farrell. “Well a rock opera is just a label for the type of music and suggests there isn’t much dialogue. A juke box musical is going to be like a ‘best of’ mix tape of a style or artist. The rock opera doesn't have to have the same writer for all the music. American Idiot just happens to have both. A great album, written by one group and sung through. The difference is Idiot was a concept album to begin with, with a very clear opinion.”

Drop Us A Line: Mail the details to us at 1255 University Avenue, Suite 270, Rochester NY 14607; or email to freetime@frontiernet.net.

Editor’s Note: Check out the full InnerView online at freetime.com. American Idiot will be at the Auditorium Theatre for one show only, Thursday, February 27th.

(could someone please cue the white, winged horse?). Some of the complaints I overheard at an advance screening concerned the fact that parts of the script veer right to the edge of becoming saccharine. Yes, they do, but they never go all the way. Besides, all of that is counterbalanced by the parts of it that jump out at you with a burst of chilling, jump-inyour-seat malevolence. There’s a nice combo of acting and writing shortly after the charming but thieving Peter starts to fall for Beverly – and she for him – then has to meet her dad, the wealthy newspaper publisher Isaac Penn (William Hurt). Farrell and Hurt are casually electric together. But soon after that, just past the film’s halfway point, there’s a plot turn that will stun some viewers into

silence, while making other’s think, or possibly blurt out, something to the effect of, “WHAT???” That’s OK, because the second half has plenty more to offer, including a jump back to present time, pulling along some of its apparently ageless characters with it; an appearance by the (in my opinion) always-welcome Jennifer Connelly; a tying up of all loose ends; and the possibility of a cinematic record being set when one character gives someone else five vicious head butts in a row. There are also a whole lot of soaring strings at the end, accompanying a conclusion that complements them. I’ve got no problem with soaring strings. Only those cold-hearted people do.

18 FREETIME February 19 – March 5, 2014

by Sue Cannon As February nears its conclusion here in the Finger Lakes region, our thoughts begin to wander. We’ve been enjoying our share of cold weather fun in these parts - everything from skiing and ice-fishing to snuggling by the fire. Right about now, however, we start to crave a different sort of adventure...something that breaks with routine. How about planning a surprise late winter getaway for you and that certain someone? In just a few hours, you can be enjoying New York, Boston, Toronto or Montreal. A special three-day weekend could be just what you both need to recharge! Take advantage of winter rates and find a great, centrally located hotel. Then, plan a driving route, search out nearby restaurants, museums, and clubs – and let the fun begin. Is your travel partner the spontaneous type? You could hide the bags in your trunk and pretend you’re just heading out to a movie! Or...maybe that’s a little too much. Then, schedule your itinerary for a future date, and slip it under a wine bucket at dinner. Whatever your style, a weekend together is always a great idea! A recent surprise trip took us to Montreal, which seems a world away but in reality is only a 6-hour drive from greater Rochester. Following my own advice, I found a great deal at a classic boutique hotel in Old Montreal, a location that allowed us to park the car on arrival and explore everything on foot, even in the cold weather. By simply drawing a circle on the map and then exploring the options, I came up with an itinerary that included restaurant reservations, museum visits, sightseeing opportunities, even a spot to hear a little light jazz. Old Montreal, with its cobblestone streets, quaint gift shops, rustic waterfront, and restored historic buildings provides a taste of Europe close to home. French is, or course, the first language of its residents and my high school language classes are just a distant memory. So I practiced phrases like “Jen ne pas parle Francais” (“I do not speak French”) before we left, but found that most of Montreal’s citizens also speak English. So, no worries.

My best laid driving plans became a little muddled in the narrow one-way streets of the Old Port region, but thanks to helpful passersby, we soon arrived at Le Place d’Armes Hotel and were greeted by a remarkably helpful doorman, Alexis, who took good care of us throughout our stay – always offering a warm greeting and knowledgeable suggestions. Our room, a Junior Suite, was truly lovely – old brick walls, an electric fireplace for ambiance, a terrific sound system, stereo and flat screen television, and an amazing bathroom with Jacuzzi tub and a huge rain shower. The “step-out balcony” was large enough for six people to enjoy! All in all, this hotel proved to be a find. There’s a game room complete with billiard table, a spa, and two restaurants three, in fact, in warm weather when the terrace opens. Yet, it maintains the intimate feel of a small, historic property. Best of all, it is smackdab in the heart of the old city. Ve n t u r i n g just around the corner, we were awe-struck by the sight of the majestic Notre Dame Basilica and the Maisonneuve Monument. The church stands in Place d’Armes surrounded by historic buildings including the impressive 17th century Saint-Sulpice Seminary and the Bank of Montreal, built in 1847. Dinner reservations pulled us away, but we’d be back! Our getaway happened to be during TasteMTL which offered prix fixe meals at a variety of establishments – from chic fivestar restaurants to cozy bistros; but there are numerous special dining events for every season in this city, famous for its cuisine. Explore your options before you go using location, atmosphere and menu choices - all of which are easily researched on line. An elegant, upscale establishment, Verses Restaurant, inside the chic Hotel Nelligan at the Old Port, was our destination. A very short walk past streets lit by gaslight was rewarded by finding an intimate, upscale, candlelit dining room enhanced by a fireplace and offering French-inspired, refined cuisine.

•••••••••••••••••••••

The every day dinner menu included such items as truffle-crusted beef tenderloin, tuna tar tar, bison, and all manner of market-fresh seafood. Poutine, a Montreal favorite consisting of potatoes, gravy and cheese, took an amazing upscale turn here where it was made with foie gras and aged cheddar. Each item was expertly and creatively prepared and presented by wait staff who attended to every need. The wine cellar at Verses must also take a bow. It is extensive, fairly priced, and varied. Suggestions are made for each entree, both on the printed menu, and by the helpful staff. Day two, our only full day to explore, found us enjoying a lovely late breakfast inside our hotel’s main dining room, Suite 701, before heading around the corner to the Notre Dame Basilica. There are guided tours of the church available, and audio-visual shows in the evenings; but we preferred to wander around ourselves. The massive cathedral has an interior made entirely of wood, but there is not a single nail anywhere – each piece is glued together and intricately inter t wined with massive stained glass windows and re m a r k a b l e statues. The altar and pulpit are extraordinary works of art; and the organ, built in 1891, has four keyboards, 99 stops and some 7,000 pipes! Next, we wandered over to the Pointe-a-Calliere museum, enticed by my desire to see the temporary exhibit, “The Beatles in Montreal,” celebrating the Fab Four’s visit to the city in 1964. It was full of memorabilia – John Lennon’s famous Rolls-Royce with its flowery paint job, guitars, concert clothing, a huge collection of early “Beatlemania” items, multi-media shows, original records, archival photos, recordings, and film excerpts – all great fun for a Beatles fan! It remains at the Pointe-a-Calliere thru March 30. Wandering out of that section of the museum, we quite literally stumbled upon the heart of the museum. The lower level is actually an archeological dig -

www.FREETIME.com •

not a depiction of a dig, but a true crypt that lies beneath the streets of Montreal. It includes the foundation of the historic Mariners House and other buildings. We discovered that we had entered this basement on one side of a modern-day street, and emerging on the other, having wandered beneath the city for blocks – fascinating! After some relaxation time at the hotel, we next headed out to an early dinner at Modavie, a lively restaurant and wine bar that offers live jazz – seven days a week – on Rue Saint-Paul. The stone walls, intimate décor, and delicious menu are complemented by the up close and personal music provided by some of Montreal’s best artists. Sunday thru Thursday, two performers sit among the diners, playing light jazz, R&B, and blues. On Friday and Saturday night, full bands perform upstairs complete with electric guitars, sax, drums, pianos, trumpets, et al. At the dinner hour, you’ll find familiar appetizers like onion soup and fried calamari offered alongside more exotic items like escargot and foie gras with pear and chutney. Main courses include duck confit, trout almandine, several lamb dishes and great pasta – the Sicilian penne was terrific. Prices range from $17 to $30. As an FYI, in general, we found there to be a great deal of seafood on most menus including octopus - which we even tried bar-b-que – as well as a lot of lamb. After dinner on this, our last evening in Montreal, we headed back to Place d’Armes and snagged a horse and carriage ride which took us through the areas of the Old City which we hadn’t had time to explore. The carriages are available everyday of the year and prices are regulated - $48 for a half hour or $80 for an hour. Our driver wrapped us up in warm blankets and off we went, listening to his detailed explanation of all that we would not have time to explore on this brief trip...all the better for planning our next excursion!
