as being completely expected and conventional. But I have in the past received scripts from people who say I wrote this with you in mind, and I’ve absolutely hated them. It’s not something I find particularly attractive to be told (laughs). Is it true that you like being unprepared when you begin a project?

A TALK WITH JEREMY IRONS By Ed Symkus There’s no mistaking the rich, melodious voice of actor Jeremy Irons. Though he first used it busking on the streets of London, accompanying himself on guitar, back in the swingin’60s, then for many years on the British stage and many shows on the BBC, American audiences know him for his feature film work, with roles ranging from Charles Henry Smithson in The French Lieutenant’s Woman to Claus von Bulow in Reversal of Fortune, (for which he won an Oscar), and the voice of the evil Scar in The Lion King. He currently plays Rodrigo Borgia on the cable series The Borgias. Irons recently spoke about his newest part, the mysterious family patriarch, Macon Ravenwood,

in the young adult supernatural romance Beautiful Creatures. What made you want to play Macon? I thought he had a certain sort of wit and charm – an enigmatic quality, which I liked. But I wasn’t very clear about who he is, and why he is. Since he is a man who has power to change a lot about himself and about his environment, it’s fairly difficult to pin him down, which I think is perhaps how he should be. So it’s probably good that I am not able to explain him too much, yet. At what point did you know that you were the inspiration for the character in the novel the film is based on? I can’t remember if it was before I signed or after I signed. Hopefully the writers are happy with what I finally produced. Whether it was something sort of similar to what they had in mind. I rather hope not, because I’d hate to be thought

I used to feel that way. I’m not sure I now feel like that. I’ve just done Henry IV for PBS. Mind you, that’s Shakespeare, and I was completely prepared for that, and I found it a great help. But I think the way I would now aim to be is to be completely ready for anything, which demands a certain preparation. And then just throw it all out. But in this film I had no preparation because I was straight off a picture I was making in Lisbon. The costumes had been made, the accent had been sort of decided on. I asked [director] Richard LaGravenese to tell me all you know about this character.

GENESEO THEATRES Lakeville Rd., Geneseo; 243-2691

Do you have any advice for young actors? Don’t give up. You’re always being slapped down, you’re always being rejected. You’re always being made to feel you can’t do it, and the ones who succeed are the ones who don’t give up.

REGAL CULVER RIDGE CINEMA 16 2255 Ridge Rd. East, Irondequoit; 544-1140

Did you have a mentor who said that to you? I was told that by the principal at my theater school. I was working down at the Old Vic in Bristol. It was around 12 o’clock at night, we were changing over one play, and another set was coming in. It was an old theater, there was a lot of dust, and I was always wheezing. I wasn’t getting any roles onstage. I was doing all this stuff offstage, working very long hours. I remember calling the principal and moaning, saying I’m not sure I can deal with this. And on the other end of the line, he said, “Soldier on, Jeremy, soldier on.”

What have you got lined up in acting? Nothing right now. I’m probably going to do another series of The Borgias. But in the past two years, I’ve made four films, two series of The Borgias, and two documentaries. I’m sort of feeling right now that I’d quite like to stop for a little bit.

SCREEN

BEAUTIFUL CREATURES Written and directed by Richard LaGravenese With Alden Ehrenreich, Alice Englert, Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum, Emma Thompson Rated PG-13 By Ed Symkus For a short while after sitting down to watch this gothic-tinged stor y of young love, you just might get the feeling that you’ve seen it before, in a not very different form. A boy meets a girl, and they’re “different” from each other, but they don’t let that get in the way of romance, even though lots of people around them do their best to break it up. Ah, yes, there was that franchise that started with Twilight. And just a couple of weeks ago, we had Warm Bodies. So yeah, this new one, like its predecessors, also based

on a novel, may sound similar, but it comes from and goes off into many other directions. It’s certainly the most properly supernatural of the bunch. And it’s much classier. When we meet 17-year-old South Carolinian Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich), we find out right away that he’s a voracious reader (Vonnegut’s his current choice), is kind of a loner, and is being brought up by his widower dad. He’s also having some pretty weird dreams about a girl whose face he can’t quite see. Hold on, there’s a new girl in town and at school, 15-year-old orphan Lena (Alice Engler t), who’s come to live with her wealthy, fashion conscious, and very mysterious Uncle Macon (Jeremy Irons) at the creepy old Ravenwood place. She, too, loves to read (Bukowski’s her present fave). Could she be the “girl of his dreams?” There’s nothing like love at first sight between them. He shows some interest, partly because she has an outspoken attitude, but likely because ev-

eryone else in town bores him. But she feigns total disinterest, as if she isn’t supposed to mingle with anyone. After a classroom display of Carrie-like abilities by her, which she never acknowledges, his fascination increases. He even follows her home, only to be told to go away because “my uncle doesn’t like people around the house.” Actually, no one in the Ravenwood family likes people very much, at least not “nor mal” people like Ethan, and everyone else in town. The appearance of Uncle Macon allows Irons to start chewing the scenery early. He’s a dashing figure in white, delivering his lines in a honey-like voice, ever ready to put a spell – or foist visions – upon an unwary visitor. There are lots of spells cast on lots of people in this little Southern town. And while the story is mostly about the slowly forming attraction between Ethan and Lena, the parade of characters around them gives the film an undeniable richness. Viola Davis plays Amma, local librarian and longtime friend of Ethan’s family (separate characters in the book), a woman with plenty of her own secrets. Watch out for Emmy Rossum (currently in Showtime’s Shameless) as Ridley, a slinky sorceress who likes to have her way with unsuspecting men. But the film’s best scene-stealing goes to the ever-surprising Emma Thompson, taking on two roles: the biblethumping Mrs. Lincoln, and the fearsome and extremely powerful Sarafine. Thompson manages to make her parts both frightening and over-the-top hilarious. The plot ends up gravitating toward the always popular battle between the light and the dark, as well as the old Shakespearian chestnut of forbidden love, in this case between a Caster (something that Lena will soon become) and a mortal. Between plentiful doses of creepiness, visual effects, a (literally) swirling sequence about family dynamics, and a quick dip into melodrama, this is a film that will please the young viewers it’s aimed at, and still keep older audiences who couldn’t handle the ridiculousness of the Twilight series happily engaged.
