folk punk, or grungegrass, taking American roots music to new and exciting places. The North Carolina band is led by two brothers, Seth and Scott Avett, who play the guitar and banjo respectively. In a live setting, The Avett Brothers showcase their impressive harmonies and southern rock vibe. Their 2008 release, The Gleam II, was followed by I and Love and You, and the Grammy-nominated 2012 release, The Carpenter. Their new one is titled Magpie and the Dandelion.

Since leaving the RPO, he has written a book, Inside Conducting, and has been freelance conducting worldwide. The program of music by Berlioz, Beethoven and Bruckner selected for this performance features pianist Jon Kimura Parker whose extraordinary career has taken him from Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House to Baffin Island and Zimbabwe. Mr. Parker has given two command performances for Queen Elizabeth II, special performances for the U.S. Supreme Court, and he’s played for the Prime Ministers of Canada and Japan. Bop Shop | Mar. 7 Guitarist Michael Musillami has had a successful career that spans more than twenty-five years and includes work as a solo performer, bandleader, composer and educator. His Trio has been together for more than a decade and has earned international acclaim. Spring Is Almost Here, and That Means Bockbier by Mark Tichenor It sure doesn’t seem like it, but spring is almost here. We’re on the cusp of trading ice scrapers for umbrellas, of shedding downfilled parkas for hoodies and, whatever light outergar ments women wear. Anyway the point is that the onset of spring is, in many ways, the start of the new year in the beer world. Historically it marks the beginning of the agricultural season. It is when ever ything around us comes back to life, including the brews we drink. Most famously, spring is the time for Bock beer, a sweeter, stronger cousin of German Helles. It was originally brewed as an ale in and around the town of Einbeck, and later transmuted into a lager by Munich’s brewers once the appropriate yeast for that purpose was discovered. The word ‘Bock’ in German means ‘goat,’ so, as you can imagine, there exist all sorts of origin legends likening drinking it to being kicked by a goat. You’ll also see plenty of caprinate imagery on Bock beer labels as well. Bock beer is difficult to codify as a style; it can be slightly on the dark side, or brewed as light as a Munich lager (Helles Bock). It’s usually quite malty and sweet, but can also take the form of a more aggressively hopped festival beer (Maibock). What all good bock beers have in common is a

pleasantly substantial body and a nourishing caramel, bready character that cheers the spirit after months spent trapped in a frozen wasteland. For some reason, Bock is a relatively overlooked style in the USA. Genesee offers Genny Bock, an Americanized take on the style, the local love of which has as much to do with its whimsical packaging as with its flavor. Shiner Bock by Spoezl Brewing Co. is also tasty and locally available. For the German stuff, you’ll probably need to make a trek to the beer store to pick up a case of Einbecker, which is malty, complex, and pretty much the true embodiment of the Bock style. More commonly available in the USA is Doppelbock, which is like Bock, but stronger, breadier and sweeter. This is the famous strong lager of Bavaria, with an alcohol content roving north of 7% AB. It was originated by Bavarian monks, who brewed it as sustenance during fasting periods, yet were somehow still able to remember their chants and prayers after drinking the stuff on an empty stomach. You can generally tell a Doppel by its name; they traditionally end with the suffix -ator. So you get beers like Spaten Optimator, Paulaner Salvator, and Ayinger Celebrator. Unlike regular ol’ Bock, Doppelbock is enthusiastically replicated in American craft breweries, and many are excellent. A great example is Trogenator from Troegs brewing of Hershey, which is available year-round but seems to taste best in the early spring. Locally, Naked Dove is releasing their Exposinator Doppelbock within the next couple of weeks, and will ser ve as the true harbinger of spring, since the weather seems unlikely to cooperate anytime soon.

Directed by Teller With Tim Jenison, Penn Jillette, David Hockney, Martin Mull Rated PG-13 By Ed Symkus Texas inventor and computer whiz Tim Jenison didn’t know much about Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675). Neither do most folks, as his life is shrouded in mystery. But of the three dozen or so Ver meer paintings that remain in museums and private collections, one thing is sure. He was brilliant in his use of light, specifically the way he had it come pouring in through windows, illuminating the subjects in his oil paintings with a clarity that was just short of photorealism. Through the years, art scholars have gawked at and argued over his small output, and many have asked, “How the heck did he do that?� After reading a couple of books suggesting that Vermeer might have had a bit of 17th century technological help in making his paintings, Jenison, who had never even picked up a brush before, began wondering about that, too. So he tinkered around, and created an optical device made of mirrors and lenses, similar to a camera obscura, that allowed him to grab some paints and brushes, and just about perfectly copy a

black & white photo of his fatherin-law. Then Jenison set out to paint a Vermeer, to recreate what he hoped would be an exact copy of the complex, light-drenched study of a young woman and her teacher, titled The Music Lesson. Things got complicated when Jenison decided it wouldn’t be enough just to use a print of The Music Lesson as a guide. The plan was to redesign and rebuild a warehouse space into a replica of Vermeer’s Delft studio, windows and all. That included finding or making objects that appear in the painting, and getting people, in costumes and wigs, to stand in for Vermeer’s models. Then he was going to sit down with paints, brushes, canvas, and that optical gizmo. The idea wasn’t to debunk Vermeer. It was just to see if he could do what Vermeer did, in the way he might possibly have done it. At dinner one night a few years ago with his longtime pal Penn Jillette – the vocal half of the magician duo Penn and Teller – he

was discussing the project, when a light bulb clicked on over Jillette’s head, followed by an excitable blurting out of something like, “We’ve got to make a movie of this!� Apparently you don’t say no when Penn Jillette gets an idea. So Jenison got to building his studio, and learning how to grind lenses and mix paints, while Jillette, after a series of unproductive meetings with producers and directors, decided to take on producing chores himself, and convinced Teller, who has directed stage plays, as well as the Penn and Teller shows, to direct the film. The result is a study in fascination, frustration, and obsession. There are chats with British pop artist David Hockney, who wrote one of the books Jenison had read, and with Jillette’s musician pal Martin Mull, who is actually quite a formidable artist. But this

is mostly a film of Jenison at work in his small studio, encountering problem after problem, figuring out how to solve them, then painting and painting, and painting some more. Nine cameras were on at all times, so there’s no Penn and Teller fakery happening here. That is really Tim Jenison putting the brush to the canvas, slowly and painstakingly getting the minutiae of Vermeer’s masterpiece, from the black and white marble floor, to the delicate f lowers and seahorses on the virginal the girl is playing, to the busily decorative Persian carpet that covers a table. Jenison takes his project very seriously, and he finds out soon enough that it ain’t easy. But there are plenty of opportunities for some humor to peek through, as when he picks up a viola da gamba that sits in the painting’s foreground, and starts plunking out Smoke on the Water. So, does Jenison succeed? Sorry, that answer won’t be revealed here. What about Vermeer? Did he paint with a technological assist rather than just with his eyes? Does that really matter? I mean, Vermeer did, indeed, make all those works of art. Who cares how he did it! Jenison gave himself one rule to follow: “Paint what you see in the mirror.� He did just that. You’ll have to buy a ticket to find out how he fared.
