ST. PATRICK’S DAY

by Susan Mary Margaret Dunne Cannon I say it every year...this is my favorite holiday! In our home, St Patrick’s Day finds the entire extended family and dear friends gathered together. The sound of Celtic music and the smell of Irish cooking fill the air, and all is well with the world. We, however, are not the only ones celebrating St. Patty’s Day. Take a look around you – there are parties scheduled at nearly every club and pub - complete with ethnic food, terrific music, Guinness and green beer! Rochester will host its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 16; but the fun is hardly confined to just a day or two. In fact, it goes on for more than a week and provides concert, Irish theatre, dancing and more. Check it out... On March 8: •Roberts Wesleyan College at 2301 Westside Drive presents a special concert titled WOMEN OF IRELAND featuring talented young female artists from Ireland – singing, dancing and playing traditional instruments. (585-2651616) On March 9 & 10: • Downstairs Cabaret Theatre at 20 Windsor Street, presents FLANAGAN’S WAKE on stage – a place where you’ll join the citizens of Grapplin, Ireland as they pay their respects to the dearly departed Flanagan. beer CRAFT

Double IPA Still Rules The Roost by Mark Tichenor With low-alcohol session beers and delicate, lacey sour ales as its most recent fads, you could be forgiven for thinking the craft beer scene was mellowing out, losing it’s cojones, taking its cues from the first half hour of Rocky III. You’d be wrong though. Still and always, the vital core of the craft beer movement, the beating, booze-sodden heart of what makes American beer exceptional, bombastic and impossible to ignore, is double IPA. And these overdone beer behemoths still register as what many connoisseurs consider the best beers in the world. The name of the style is a bit misleading; the creation of a memorable high-strength hop bomb involves more than grabbing the IPA recipe and adding twice as much of ever ything. When the hop addition increases, the fermentable sugar level inches into the red and the ABV climbs over 7%, things can go horribly wrong. The key to a great double IPA is balance. Hops used in DIPAs are high alpha acid varieties like Cascade, Amarillo and Citra. These hops put out enormous quantities of resin and citrus flavor that spans the gamut of flavor notes, anything from mango or pineapple to, um, substances only legal in Washington and Colorado. But all that hop flavor dissolves into so much bitter fizzwater without an enormous malt backbone to serve as a counterbalance. For one thing, it’s from the malt that a beer derives the sugar which will ferment into alcohol, and for a beer the strength of a double IPA, you need a LOT of that sugar. Just as important, the sweet, hearty, rustic nature of that malt brings out and lifts all those amazing hop flavors and aromas. This kind of beer embodies everything American. It’s very existence as a style is owed to people dissatisfied with existing boundaries; people who couldn’t stop themselves from asking “what if?” The result of that type of curiosity turned out to be more than a strong, characterful style of beer, it was the ethos that revived and grew the comatose US brewing industry.

March 6 - March 20, 2013 FREETIME Although the Pacific coast is the epicenter of Double IPA, home to examples like the Russian River Brewing Company’s famous “Pliny the Younger,” a beer people will inexplicably wait in line for eight hours to purchase. The style, however, has taken root all over the country, and many New York State breweries produce excellent DIPAs of their own. Brooklyn Brewing, Southern Tier Brewing and Captain Lawrence Brewing Company fabricate excellent examples. Also, Three Heads Brewing just released their “Too Kind,” a turbocharged, amped-up version of their popular “The Kind” IPA. My pick for folks in the Rochester area: “OT20.” Originally brewed by CB’s Brewing of Honeoye Falls for the 20th anniversary of local English pub The Old Toad, “OT20” proved so popular that it’s still being brewed four years later. It’s a sweet, grapefruity, chunky assassin of a beer. It will destroy you if you let it (this is the voice of experience talking). “OT20” is also available for sale in only one place on this Earth: The taproom of The Old Toad. That makes it at least as, if not more, exclusive than the aforementioned “Pliny The Younger.” That’s fine, because double IPA is an affordable luxury product and, like all the good things in life, you shouldn’t have to queue up for eight hours to enjoy one of the most flavorful styles of beer in existence. In Other Beers Three Heads “Rochestefarian Wee Heavy” is now out and flowing from a tapline near you. Brewed in the Scottish ale tradition (or at least as close to any tradition as Three Heads will allow themselves to get), Rochestefarian goes down sweet and strong, with a substantial hop kick in the finish. It’s a big, warming beer that should set your palate up nicely for the spring seasonals to come. Oh and the tap handle art is awesome. Mark owns a laptop and likes beer. SCREEN

JACK THE GIANT SLAYER

Written by Darren Lemke, Christopher McQuarrie, Dan Studney; directed by Bryan Singer Rated PG-13 By Ed Symkus My first reaction after watching this engaging and exquisitely made movie was why didn’t they just call it Jack and the Beanstalk? After all, it’s about a poor young lad whose mom sends him to town to sell their cow, but he instead trades it for some magic beans, which grow into a big beanstalk, which he climbs, and arrives at a place where he does battle with a giant, etc. Well, OK, in this version he’s selling his horse, and those magic beans (here referred to as “holy relics”) have a history behind them, and they’ve added a damsel in distress, along with a population of giants up in the sky, not just one. But, c’mon, it’s still Jack and the Beanstalk. My second reaction was that it was so engaging and exquisitely made. But that shouldn’t have been a surprise. Director Bryan Singer has already done a handful of fine films, ranging from offbeat drama (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie) to comic book adaptations (X-Men, Superman Returns), and he knows how to craft a solid movie. His move to the family film genre looks and feels just as good as everything he’s done previously. Yup, this is a family film, replete with heroes and villains and romance and fantastical adventures and, by the way, nasty giants who seem to have the most fun when biting off the heads of people. Wait, it’s OK. It’s a fairy tale. Fairy

•••••••••••••••••••••

tales are often quite violent. But the violence here is done, for the most part, either in the distance or slightly off-camera. Honest, it’s OK to bring the kids (I’d say age 7 and up). The biggest difference in this story and the one we all grew up on is the addition of Princess Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson), the tomboyish, free-spirited daughter of King Brahmwell (Ian McShane), who is being forced to marry her off to the vile and ambitious Roderick (a joyously snarling Stanley Tucci). Upon running away from the castle, there’s no wondering about who she’ll bump into. Very soon destiny brings her to the home of commoner Jack (Nicholas Hoult, currently in Warm Bodies), and then literally gets her tangled up in that infernal beanstalk and soon after, placed inside the cage of a giant. So there’s your damsel in distress angle, one that’s a bit of a stretch since this gal’s so feisty, she likely could get herself out of any jam. Singer and a trio of screenwriters have a good time mixing action and adventure with longings for

freedom and a touch of angst. They have a little trouble when they also throw in some misguided attempts at physical humor, but the actors are all game at line delivery – some of it very funny – and a couple of them take the ball and run with it. Tucci, hidden under a Sheriff of Nottingham wig and behind an over-the-top British accent, is both dastardly and hilarious. But it’s Bill Nighy, in one of those performance capture-CGI outings, who steals the show with both vigor and vinegar in his portrayal the giant General Fallon. Part of the greatness of his character is that he’s presented as a two-headed giant. The small one on his shoulder (voice of John Kassir), the victim of a “failure to communicate,” bears a strong vocal resemblance to White Fang on the old Soupy Sales TV show. Funny stuff. There are terrific visual effects all around, from the look and movement of the giants to the creation of this other world above the clouds. My favorite adaptation moment comes when it’s revealed that four of the General Fallon’s comrades are named Fee, Fye, Foe, and Fumm.
