The young performer hails from Kansas City where she’s been knocking ‘em dead on the club scene for some time. Fish has toured with Cassie Taylor and Dani Wilde as part of the Blues Caravan Tour; and has appeared across North America and Europe as well as at sea on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise. Her latest release is Runaway, which features members of her popular group, Girls With Guitars.

He led the MSO to Cuba in the ‘90s, the first major American orchestra to perform there in 37 years. Kilbourn Hall | Mar. 22 A concert featuring the works of legendary jazz composer Marty Paich will feature his son, David Paich, keyboardist/singer/ composer and member of the rock group Toto; and drummer Dennis Mackrel, leader of the Count Basie Orchestra. David is known for writing such hits as “Hold the Line,� “Rosanna,� and “Africa.� He’s arranged music on the movies First Blood and Shirley Valentine; and composed the music for Dune. Mackrel has played

with the American Jazz Orchestra, the Vangurad Jazz Orchestra, and the Dizzy Gillespie all-Star Big Band, as well as his own group - The Manhattan Symphony Jazz Orchestra. He became leader of the Count Basie Orchestra in 2010.

There’s something in the American psyche that makes so many of us gravitate to the grandiose. Some view it as a great national trait, others a curse. No matter where we are, no matter what our tastes, there’s a compulsion for more: more money, a bigger house, hotter chicken wings. Of course, that also applies to how we we approach craft beer, and the alcohol content therein. An appreciative palate is not instantaneously for med, rather it starts roughhewn and gets chipped away at until finer f lavors blossom. Hence the common gravitation of new craft beer lovers to comically bitter and insanely strong beers. That’s a lucky thing, because beer is fundamentally a roughhewn beverage, and these insane and comical beers are some of the best in the world. That’s why it’s so easy to fall in love with craft beer, you don’t need years of poring over vineyard geography and grape grafting notes to have a decent conversation about the stuff. One thing you don’t want on any palate however, even in beers of considerable might, is the taste of alcohol. Ironically, the methods used to avoid alcohol flavors play a large role in why big beers taste the way they do. To get more alcohol into a beer, you need more fermentable sugar. To get more fermentable sugar, you need more malt. That’s where those robust, bready and sweet tastes come from. Of course those flavors need balance and that is why God invented hops.

To balance a big, high-gravity beer you need a lot of hops, strong ones, with high alpha acid content. This is one of the areas where big beers diverge; those made with roasted malt and minimal aroma and bittering hops go on to become imperial stouts, and others comprised of paler malt and heavily hopped, there’s your India Pale Ale. The first thing beer neophytes fall in love with is hop flavor. That enticing blend of citrus, earthiness and bitter draws people in and provides a convenient scale for how hardcore a beer lover one has become. A broader range of taste is developed with time, but even longtime craft beer lovers proudly wear the label “hophead.” It’s ironic that, as beers get more powerful, so much more attention must be paid to that kind of misdirection of the palate, a sleight-of-mouth tr ick tha t distracts you from alcohol flavor by hammering your tongue with big hop and malt taste and tons of aroma. Not all beers successfully pull it off. It’s not at all uncommon to feel an alcoholic burn in some of the bigger styles. It’s also safe to assume that beers will continue to push the extreme envelope, because that’s the American brewing way. Brooklyn Brewing Company brewmaster Gar rett Oliver is famousl y quoted as saying “The hoppiest beer? It’s a fairly idiotic pursuit, like a chef saying, ‘This is the saltiest dish.’ Anyone can toss hops in a pot, but can you make it beautiful?” The same goes for the strongest beer, and, to many craft breweries, the idea doesn’t seem so idiotic anymore. Written by Karen Croner; directed by Paul Weitz With Tina Fey, Paul Rudd, Lily Tomlin Rated PG-13 By Ed Symkus There will be a lot of people lining up to see this new comedy just because Tina Fey is in it. Being a famous TV star tends to draw people in when they make a movie. But there will also be a lot of folks buying tickets because they read and loved Jean Hanff Korelitz’s popular 2009 novel, on which the film is based. Fey fans will be happy, if not quite delighted, as her performance is pretty good, but too bland which, to be fair, is what the character calls for. But there’s going to be a problem, if not a furor, among readers who have been waiting to see how the book fares onscreen. The problem is that there’s not much resemblance between the two. The stor y, about Princeton admissions officer Portia Nathan (Fey) having some difficulties concerning Jeremiah (Nat Wolff), a bright outsider sort of high schooler who’s applying there, is at the center of the film, as it was in the book. And there’s John Pressman (Paul Rudd), who runs the developmental high school that Jeremiah goes to, also right from the book. And for the feminists out there, don’t worry, Portia’s mom, Susannah (Lily

more than an emotional catfight with a coworker. You want to feel for these two nice, caring people, but it’s difficult when they’re so uninteresting. Then there’s Lily Tomlin, who absolutely lights up the screen as the feisty Susannah, a single mom and an independent spirit who was likely right up in the front lines when the women’s movement got its start, and has never backed off. One of the film’s best – and most meaningful – sight gags is the tattoo of Bella Abzug on her shoulder. (Those of you too young to get it should Google her.) Director Paul Weitz is a little too loose with the film’s moods, as they change, from way up to way down, too quickly. But neither he nor scriptwriter Karen Croner can be blamed for the hard-totake, not-very-believable ending. That problem rests solidly with Korelitz, and is the way she ended the book. Why couldn’t the filmmakers have changed that? Tomlin), has some screen time. But, without giving anything away to those not familiar with the source material, some changes have been made. Some big changes. Changes in structure and plot development and message and eventual outcome that are likely going to disappoint many, and outrage others. Of course there’s the argument that the book is the book, and the movie is the movie, and I am one book- and movie-lover that accepts that. But sorry, even though this still remains a study of parent-child relationships, the tampering committed in adapting it goes far beyond anything that’s called for. OK, with that tirade out of the way, and for anyone not familiar with the book, the film stands on its own, but it doesn’t stand very tall. Both Fey and Rudd – thank goodness they’re not portraying opposites who attract – really underplay their roles. Rudd is usually good at this kind of thing, letting a mischievous glance reveal exactly what he’s planning to do, or putting on a blank expression that really lets you feel his character’s exasperation. But this time he comes across as a shy dullard, a guy who wants to do the right thing – help get this kid into college – but doesn’t know where to begin. Fey appears to be the victim of a director who’s told her to hold back, until it’s time to unleash her inner self, which she gets to do a couple of times in what amounts to nothing
