One of the things I miss about being a kid is that loud, colorful ecosystem of toys, food, and TV cartoons in which I dwelt. The TV shows I watched, spawned the toys I wanted, which in turn begat the breakfast cereals I was always pestering my long-suffering parents to buy. For the most part, that cycle is something we outgrow, but there is some deep-rooted part of the psyche which longs to return to that comfortable old habit. There must be, because there is no other rational way to explain the proliferation of theme beers. Theme beers, for the uninitiated, are middle-of-the-road craft beers run through the world’s most cynical marketing departments, and tied in with popular television shows or bands. It’s Smurf berry Crunch in a bottle, and the fact that consumer demand exists for them is enough to shatter all faith in the human species. Let’s start with Warnog Ale, from the Canadian-based Federation of Beer. This marketing company cum brewery with an “official partnership with the Star Trek franchise contracts its ale from a brewery in Indiana, slaps a Klingon logo on the can, and sells it to people who take science fiction way too seriously. In case you’re down on the Klingon Empire, Warnog also offers Vulcan Ale. Either way, it’s probably best not to wear a red shirt when consuming them. If that isn’t enough of a cynical pop-culture ploy, you might want to try Phildeplphia-based Dock Street Brewing’s “Walker, A beer “inspired by hit AMC series “The Walking Dead, and-oh you vegetarians are gonna love thisbrewed with real brains. Billed in their press release as an “American Pale Stout (do styles still exist or are beer terms now put together by pulling tiles out of a Scrabble bag), Walker contains cranberries for tartness and coloring, and uses smoked

www.FREETIME.com •

goat brains added before sparging to “provide this beer with subtle smoke notes. At least Dock Street Walker teaches us that, despite observational evidence to the contrary, goats have brains. Beyond that, this mishmosh of gimmicks promises little of relevance to the drinker, and only the most tenuous connection to the television show after which it is named. Definitely a beer that appeals to zombie consumers. These are but two of the proliferation of theme beers designed to catch consumers’ escapist preferences taking priority over their taste buds. There is also a “Harry Potter beer, a Hanson beer (mmm-hops), and a Game of Thrones beer. I expect ‘50 Shades of Ale’ is just around the corner. Folks, they are laughing a t us . This type of beer m a r ke t i n g n e e d not promise quality beer, or interesting flavor. Craft beer skyrocketed through a dizzying growth cycle with no end in sight, and apparently that is because we will buy anything and consider it amazing, even if it only comes in a can with our favorite spaceship painted onto the side. Cr a f t b re w i n g wa s founded by people who tasted their beer and found it wanting. It was built by people trying to make something better. It has evolved into a series of beers whose flavor profiles are irrelevant. It is the Cola Wars all over again, on a smaller scale. Ultimately, how is this any different from how the much-maligned ‘big multinational breweries’ vie for your attention? Ultimately, we all need to ask ourselves why we buy craft beer. Is it for the contents or is it for the can? Mark owns a laptop and likes beer. For more on beer, check out the beercraft blog, updated regularly, at beercraft. wordpress.com. DISC

Big Station – Alejandro Escovedo

on

SCREEN

(Fantasy Records) By Scott Gudell

Alejandro Escovedo comes from a family of Mexican musicians via Texas, each having chosen a different musical fork in the road. Alejandro tried a type of punk approach in the early part of his career and eventually settled into a more “Americana meets roots rock” style as he developed. After fighting an illness in the early 2000’s, he beat it and returned with several strong solo albums. 2012’s Big Station is his latest. The album opens with an aggressive “spit in the wind” approach, he has an encounter with death on the next track and

deals with an abundance of drugs routinely offered to road warriors on several other tracks. There are songs that reveal his desolation and depth of concerns about the insidious evils of society but then he gets fired up and bounces back by boldly proclaiming that he’ll party with anyone, anywhere, all night long. Although the dominant instruments are understated drums, guitar and bass, there are subtle echoes of trumpet, sax and cello drifting just below the surface. With his assured, focused vocals pacing the way, this is a thick, rich recording that challenges the listener and rewards those who pay attention. Editors Note: Alejandro Escovedo is scheduled to perform at the Zeppa Auditorium on April 8, 2014.

THE RAID 2

Written and directed by Gareth Evans Rated R By Ed Symkus When The Raid, the rabidly action-filled cop versus criminal martial arts thriller, was unleashed on an unsuspecting public two years ago, even hardcore fans of the genre stood back and said, “Whoa! Never seen anything quite like that!” The film turned out to be an unlikely art house hit, and it’s no surprise that there’s now a sequel. What is a surprise is that this follow-up to the simply told and extremely violent original is so different in tone. No, not in the area of violence. In fact, the sequel ramps that part of it way up. There are fights in this film that involve fists and feet and knives and guns and fast-moving vehicles (and two of the characters are named Hammer Girl and Baseball Bat Man). The tonal difference is that in the midst of the carnage, there’s also a terrific, multi-character-driven story being told. The Raid 2 begins on the same day The Raid ended, with exhausted and badly beaten cop Rama (Iko Uwais) being congratulated for his work involving the vanquishing of drug lords and dirty cops in the first film’s scary apartment building setting. But now, in order to keep more bad guys and dirty cops from causing harm to Rama’s family, he’s declared dead (by his good cop boss) and thrown into prison, undercover, in order to get close to much bigger targets. Writer-director-editor-fight

•••••••••••••••••••••

choreographer Gareth Evans, who is from Wales, but made both films in Indonesian language and locales, wastes little time getting to the action, with a fantastic and sprawling rainy day prison yard fight exploding just a few minutes in, involving prisoner vs. prisoner confrontations right alongside guards vs. prisoners melees. But soon after, the story begins to take shape, with Rama getting close to and ear ning the respect of another prisoner, Ucok (Arafin Putra), whose dad is one of the big local crime lords, Bangun (Tio Pakusodewo). This means that, for reasons of loyalty, there’s a syndicate job waiting for our undercover cop hero when he and Ucok eventually get out of the slammer. But, with shades of Shakespearean stor ytelling, Bangun ends up seeing Rama as a better successor to his crown than his own son. Yes, it’s a classic case of a power-hungry son wanting only to be as good as his father, but being spurned. Yet before anything comes of that, there are mentions of trouble in the air among bad guy factions, specifically the Bangun family and the Goto family, both of whom want to be crime rulers. And don’t forget that there are still bad cops out there. Complications pile up in areas of plotting, and there’s an abundance of shifting allegiances among the power players, but the script and story always remains clear and focused. And then the film effortlessly gets back to what made its predecessor so great: relentless action. There’s a brand new revisiting of a sequence in The Raid that had heads bashed into light fixtures, faces smashed into walls,

www.FREETIME.com •

and bodies thrown through windows . But then the ante is upped . E vans has no problem presenting three separate, equally violent and fastmoving scenes happening simult aneousl y, and the fights continually get better and more vicious. There will be much discussion among genre aficionados as to which is the more insane sequence: the non-stop bloody fight in a white-tiled kitchen, or a high-speed car chase that includes all five people in one vehicle duking it out as well as the joining in of various other cars and motorcycles, the passengers and drivers of which are firing pistols and Uzis. What really puts this film over the top is Evans’ stunning editing of these sequences. They’re all filmed in short pieces and brilliantly strung together into lengthy scenes that are absolutely breathtaking. I can think of no better action twin bill than The Raid and The Raid 2. The story in the second one far surpasses the first in scope and depth, but as a pair, they are two of the most exciting films I’ve ever seen.
