Dubbed “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” by The New York Times, Wicked won 26 major awards including a Grammy and three Tony Awards. In this tale, long before Dorothy drops into the Land of Oz, two other girls meet there. One, born with emerald green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood; the other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, as these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch. The Red Room | Apr. 3 The father & son duo of Tim & Myles Thompson features Nashville-based fingerstyle guitarist Tim – a producer/songwriter/educator. He won the International Fingerstyle Guitar Championship in 2008 and has been featured on National Public Radio and with such popular acts as Crystal Gayle and Highway 101. He now tours with his 18-yearold son, violinist Myles Thompson. Together, they’ve appeared at the Montreal Jazz Festival and performed from coast-to-coast as well as in England, Romania, Cyprus, Norway and Canada.

Local fans will remember him from the 2003, 2009 & 2011 Rochester International Jazz Festivals. Stephane’s original theme song for the Woody Allen film Midnight in Paris, “Bistro Fada,” topped the charts. His recent album is Origins.

Among hip-hop aficionados, GZA/Genius is revered for his f lawless technique and lyrical dexterity - considered by many to be the best pure rapper in the Wu-Tang Clan… Fronted by Wiki and featuring MC Hak and producer Sporting Life, NYC’s Ratking mixes youthful hardcore energy with post hip-hop. Roger McGuinn By Scott Gudell The 1960’s are repeatedl y referenced as one of the most fertile decades for music. Recordings from countless artists from that period are heard on a regular basis, and many of those musicians laid the foundation for the rich music that followed. Roger McGuinn was there at the right time…with the right talent. As a founding member of The Byrds, he helped create such memorable songs as “Eight Miles High,” “Chestnut Mare,” and “So You Want To Be A Rock And Roll Star,” as well as presenting definitive versions of songs by others, including Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man,” and Pete

Seeger’s “Turn, Turn, Turn.” Mr. McGuinn spoke with us in late March from his home in Florida, as he was preparing to hit the road to make an appearance at the JCC on April 15. Although The Byrds are considered a rock band by many, the roots of their unique style grew from the band members having started their music careers in the folk world. After mentioning how the group had influenced me when I was young, McGuinn related a memory of listening to the Weavers on the radio when he was just six years old, and singing along with “Good Night Irene.” “I was always a big fan of (leader) Pete Seeger, and then I finally got to meet him years later.” Reflecting back on the Byrds’ original line-up, he said “We all came out of the folk background. I worked

with the Limelighters, the Chad Mitchell Trio, Judy Collins, so I was steeped in folk music. David Crosby was a folk solo artist when I met him...Gene Clark had been with the New Christy Minstrels, and Chris Hillman was from a bluegrass band, so everyone was kind of folky. But we got inspired by the Beatles so we became a rock band.” McGuinn went on to explain that the group’s folk roots were so strong, “that when we tried to play rock and roll, the folk music came out, so they labeled it ‘folk rock.’ The Beatles inspired everybody to break away from the business model of having one or two hits on an album and the rest ‘filler.’ The Beatles made every song a possible hit and sometimes they’d have five of them on the charts at the same time, and that was a breakthrough for songwriters and singers. We were so enamored with the Beatles...we followed that business model.” Eventuall y band members started to come and go, with David Crosby one of the first to exit. “Even the Rolling Stones had members come and go, but they are pretty consistent. They sound like the Rolling Stones,” McGuinn reflected. New members in The Byrds pushed them closer to a country rock sound which helped create the iconic Sweetheart of the Rodeo LP, a “must have” record for Americana artists to this day. McGuinn eventually left the group and recorded several solo albums, including Cardiff Rose. As the title track was influenced by old sea shanties, McGuinn

reminisced on another Seeger influence. “Pete Seeger was the first person I heard do sea shanties back around 1958. He explained how these songs were used on shipboard for work. They would pull up the anchor, raise the sail…I have a tremendous love for the sea. In fact, I love the songs so much that our latest CD is called CCD, and it’s 23 songs of the sea.” This and many other CDs and downloads are available at his web site, and through various other channels. So what can we expect when Roger McGuinn visits Rochester on April 15? Without giving too much away, you’ll hear classic Byrds songs, newer solo efforts as well as engaging stories. Most likely McGuinn will touch on a career-changing encounter with jazz legend Miles Davis, and about how McGuinn came to write the title song to one of the generation-defining movies of the 1960’s, Easy Rider. And for guitar lovers, he’s expected to bring a seven string guitar that he designed for the Martin Company, as well as other Martin guitars, a Rickenbacker guitar, and to round things out, a five string banjo! He’s also working on a DVD that will include inter views with artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, and “a couple of guys from the Byrds.” Seems like everything comes full circle. tor Derek Cianfrance is the same guy that made the muddled, overwrought, and just too moody (but Sundance-praised) Blue Valentine a couple of years ago. This new film is just so much more assured, so much more successfully reliant on storytelling over atmosphere. Yet it, too, sets a tone and holds onto it. Until it’s time to move on to another, related tone. It’s a film that takes a lot of risks, ranging from the honest and daring performances by the entire cast to its physical structure. It’s a sprawling story, told in three distinct, completely separate acts or chapters, and featuring characters whose lives intertwine. As has been mentioned about certain films on these pages (and

websites) before, it would be best to know as little as possible about the plotlines in order to enjoy the experience more. Best to be unaware of the shifts it’s going to take, of the unHollywood-like surprises it features. Some viewers will surely be alienated, disappointed, maybe even upset at the way the film lives and breathes, but just as many others will give it props for the chances it takes. The film begins with a look at Luke (Ryan Gosling) a stunt motorcycle rider in a traveling circus who discovers at a stop in Schenectady that he has a young son, courtesy of Romina (Eva Mendes), the woman he bedded down when the circus came to town the previous year. Gosling’s acting chops have been coming together in recent years, and got a

big boost with his performance in Drive. Here he jumps up another notch, depending more on small things like the way he walks (the camera follows him from behind the way it followed Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler and his silences. He’s aided by a great pouty outing from Mendes, and some very strong support from Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn as Robin, a former criminal who introduces him to the world of the bank robberies that will help support his son. One of those mood changes comes during the robbery sequences, in which the director, wanting a sense of realism, used actual bank employees and customers in place of actors. In an about-face move, he pumps the film up with a super-stylized look and feel of speed as Luke makes his escapes on his bike. The second third of the film concerns the rookie cop, Avery (Bradley Cooper), who finds himself on the trail of the man who’s become known as the MotoBandit. But it turns into a study of his own ambitions, as well as, like with Luke, how he deals with becoming a father. Cooper, too, has made incredible headway into getting audiences to understand that he’s much more than the hunky comic actor they got to know in The Hangover and its sequel. He was very good in The Words and the more demanding Silver Linings Playbook, and he makes great use of his troubled, expressive face here. When the film shifts again, it jumps to 15 years later, and continues with two other characters, A.J. (Emory Cohen), and Jason (Dane Dehaan, who played the most pent-up of the three kids in the terrific Chronicle). I won’t blatantly reveal who these two characters are, as it’s given away soon enough, but suffice it to say that the film continues on with its Shakespearian examination of father-son relationships. A hint is that the camera starts to follow Jason in the same manner that it earlier followed Luke. This all ends up being a story about folks who are haunted by past actions – not every one of them their own – and their resulting regrets. Loaded with guilt and irony, it’s a searing portrait of people who have lost their way, and don’t know how to begin finding it.
