14 FREETIME April 15 - April 29, 2015

inner VIEW

A conversation with Ron Carter, Class of 2015 Inductee, Rochester Music Hall of Fame By Scott Gudell When you def tl y balance “quality” with “quantity”, you’ve successfully walked a creative tightrope that few artists have ever navigated to the extent Ron Carter has. Although he is well known to millions of passionate music fans as the jazz bassist on numerous recordings as a session leader, Mr. Carter was also part of the seminal mid-sixties Miles Davis group, and has been the bassist of choice on well over 2500 other recordings…and counting. The list of artists he’s worked with is a who’s who of the entertainment world, including jazz legend Chico Hamilton, Davis alumni Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams, and pop artists Billy Joel, Paul Simon and even Grace Slick. Mr. Carter will be inducted into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame on Sunday April 26, 2015. In anticipation to the celebration, we had a chance to talk with Mr. Carter by phone a few weeks ago. Ron Carter’s connection with Rochester began in the late 1950’s when he migrated east from

Michigan to attend the Eastman School of Music. Although he was passionate about classical music, he quickly discovered that the potential for a black artist to be fully assimila ted into a classical orchestra was still years away at that point. There was limited interaction with the school’s imposing director, the long-tenured Howard Hanson. “I knew him and I would see him in the halls and we would say hello, but that was about it. We never had any real ‘how you doing my friend, how can I help you?’ I was just one of the guys,” Carter recalled. Although we didn’t discuss it this time, Carter has spoken about when the renowned conductor Leopold Stokowski visited the Eastman School of Music, and although the famed conductor was impressed with Carter’s skills, he stated that he didn’t believe he could successfully bring a black musician to Texas since they probably weren’t ready for it yet. To the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra’s credit, Carter was able to work with them for several years before he embraced the jazz world in the early to mid-1960’s. “I’m always available to do it (perform classical music), but I think the classical community may know my name but they may not call because they think I’m too busy, but that’s a mistake. When I get those kinds of calls, I’m always available.” One of the first musicians Carter worked with after leaving the Eastman School of Music was jazz drummer Chico Hamilton. I asked Carter to compare the style of the veteran to the much younger Tony Williams when Carter and Williams joined forces in the Miles Davis’ group shortly after. “Tony was 16 or 17 when I knew him in Miles’ band and Chico was probably in his late sixties or early fifties when I first met him. They came from different eras to begin with. One of the things I learned

•••••••••••••••••••••

from both of them is their passion for music…Tony stopped playing for years to go to school to learn arranging, and of course Chico (worked with many artists) and had been performing way before Tony was ever born. They were both really complete musicians and to me even more complete people.” After reflecting back on his tenure with the veteran jazz artist Hamilton, Carter stated that “It’s kind of hard to ignore history when you’re playing with people who are part of it.” Some of Carter’s earliest recording sessions were just across the river from New York City, at Riverside Records in New Jersey. Along with companies such as Blue Note and Verve, Riverside, with the help of Orin Keepnews and Rudy Van Gelder, was one of the companies to work. “Well, you know, the sessions haven’t changed despite the time frame involved. Working with Orin, he kind of let the musicians do what they did and he stayed out of the way. He’d make suggestions…but basically he was like a monitor. Rudy Van Gelder was a different person because he was concerned with how the record actually sounded. He was also up on the latest equipment, the latest gear, the latest microphones and turntables…high end recording equipment. He was really on top of all those things and so much that he set the standard on how jazz was recorded back in those days, and they still sound like they were recorded ten minutes ago.” When asked about the balance between the rhythm section (bass and drums) and the rest of any ensemble, Carter stated that he really felt that many bass players tend to get a late start. “Bass players generally don’t start taking lessons until well into their professional career. They’re not encouraged to, and they kind of learn as they go by. If no one takes them under their wings, they are the last ones to make progress. When I get this kind of question, I always tell them that you have to practice every day and to get a wonderful teacher to help you on your instrument.” Editor’s Note: Read the complete Ron Carter InnerView online at freetime.com - Ron Carter will inducted into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame on Sunday, April 26 at the Kodak Hall at the Eastman Theatre alongside Wilmer & The Dukes, Gap Mangione, Henry Juszkiewicz, and William Warfield.

CRAFT

Kentucky Breakfast Stout by Mark Tichenor It’s dark and rich, full of toffee and vanilla; a beautiful onyx-hued stout, aged in bourbon barrels for over a year and released annually at the end of March. Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout, is generally regarded as one of the finest beers in the nation, and every spring, the Michigan brewery rolls it out in limited release to discerning pubs and beer retailers across the country. And you can’t get any of it, because of the beer nerds camped outside of stores, waiting for the delivery truck. In most locations, the stuff stays in stock for less than a day. For many craft beer hobbyists, KBS release day is practically an annual holiday. Frankly, there are worse things in life to celebrate. Fear not, that was just for the initial release. No one lines up at the Apple store for the newest iPhone on the second day, and it’s the same with beer. KBS will soon

be out in general release, not in any great quantity, but available to those who search. The Tap and Mallet in Rochester will have it on draft for certain. In an era when every beer issued forth from a small brewery is elevated in the eyes of the public, Kentucky Breakfast Stout stands out as a true “craft beer. Founders Brewing, of Kalamazoo Michigan, went through considerable expense procuring the bourbon barrels in which it is aged, and does not rush the aging process. The result is an absolutely decadent beer - luxury in a glass. On first pour, one is struck by how black and viscous the beer seems, absolutely opaque with a russet head. As you’d probably expect, it is absolutely bursting with aroma; vanilla, mocha and a hint of coconut all blending, yet individually discernible. The first sip is sublime. it’s not as thick as you’d expect, yet possesses a heavy enough body to wrap the complementary vanilla, coffee and caramel flavors around the palate, giving the taster the opportunity to clearly pick out each flavor, and savor the way they blend together. The swallow brings out the bourbon notes, which sit prominently on the tongue, but not in a harsh home opener in Sahlen’s Stadium, 460 Oak Street. For this match, which starts at 2:05 p.m., their opponent is the New York Red Bulls. Call (585) 454-KICK or visit www. rhinossoccer.com. KNIGHTHAWKS PLAY FINAL HOME GAME OF SEASON The Rochester Knighthawks, our indoor professional lacrosse team, will take on the New England Black Wolves on April 25 at 7:30 in their final home game of regular season play at the Blue Cross Arena, One War Memorial Drive.
