Auditorium Theatre | thru Apr. 21 Back by popular demand, the cultural phenomenon known as Wicked is in town to conclude a three-week run at the Auditorium Theatre. Dubbed “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” by The New York Times, Wicked won 26 major awards including a Grammy and three Tony Awards. In this tale, long before Dorothy drops into the Land of Oz, two other girls meet there. One, born with emerald green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood; the other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, as these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch. Popular songs include “Popular,” “What is This Feeling” (Loathing), “I’m Not That Girl,” “Defying Gravity,” “No Good Deed” and “For Good.”

Dinosaur BBQ | Apr. 17 Johnny Ra wls, bor n and raised in Mississippi, spent over two decades apprenticing as a sideman to many top masters, and driving millions of miles with his own band - backing up legends such as Lynn White, Little Johnnie Taylor, Z.Z. Hill and O.V. Wright. Rawls has always stayed in demand because of his talent and musical versatility (he’s proficient on guitar, bass, keyboards and vocals). Releases include Can’t Sleep at Night, Here We Go, My Turn to Win, Put Your Trust in Me, Louisiana Woman, Lucky Man, Heart & Soul, Red Cadillac, Ace of Spades, Memphis Still Got Soul and his latest, Soul Survivor.

Crowned with the 2012 American Idol title, singer-songwriter-guitarist Phillip Phillips makes his way to Rochester in support of his debut album, The World from the Side of the Moon, playing April 25 at St. John Fisher’s Student Life Center.

Thirsty Frog | Apr. 18 Boston’s Celtic punk riot folk act, The Swaggerin’ Growlers, come to town. Known for their impressive live shows which they describe as providing “unapologetic anarchistic joy, professionally and shamelessly,” the group has released three full lengths to date, the most recent being Outlaw Waltz...S.S. Web features Henry Berger, David Schuster, Bryan Holiday and Kyle Davis. The Milwaukee-based act released North in 2011. In performance, they like to get their audience up and dancing, drinking, and having a great time.

Water St. Music Hall | Apr. 18 Since their formation in 1994, New Haven CT’s Ha tebreed has grown into one of the most sought after hardcore bands in the U.S., sharing the stage with everyone from Ozzy to Murphy’s Law. Their combination of brutal metallic riffs, gutwrenching vocals and classic mosh parts has catapulted them to the forefront of the hardcore genre. Water St. Music Hall | Apr. 19 The Slide Brothers are standard bearers of the sacred steel tradition; and they’ve now taken their sound beyond – tackling rock, funk and blues; and easily transitioning between genres, incorporating gospel and secular material. They tour in support of their first studio album titled Robert Randolph Presents: The Slide Brothers. The Slide Brothers are Calvin Cook, Chuck Campbell, Darick Campbell and Aubrey Ghent.

A “One On One” Conversation with Lou Gramm, Rochester Music Hall of Fame Inductee - The Class of 2013 By Scott Gudell It’s an elite and difficult club to enter. British bands such as the Rolling Stones and the Beatles have been in “it” for decades. And two U.S. bands in “it” have their roots right here in Rochester, NY. We all know that somewhere… each and every day of the year… the iconic and memorable music of the Stones and the Beatles is being played or heard numerous times. That’s also true when it comes to songs written and sung by Gene Cornish of the Young Rascals and Lou Gramm of Foreigner, two musicians with roots here in Rochester, New York. Gene Cornish was inducted into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame/ Class of 2012 and Lou Gramm is

being formally inducted into the hall/class of 2013. Very few bands are part of “it,” the club in which the music is seeringly memorable, well-crafted and stands the hostile test of time. Influential music that’s heard over and over and instantly recognizable. With his music being heard somewhere, someplace, on a daily basis, Lou Gramm is a proud member of the club. Coincidently, I heard “Cold As Ice” on a nationally televised news broadcast less than 24 hours before I sat down with Mr. Gramm for an exclusive hour-long interview in late March to discuss his induction into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame. But first things first. Let’s rewind some 35 years to when Foreigner first came together as a group. The band with an American born and raised lead singer, ironically, also had its origins when former members of other influential British groups such as King Crimson and Spooky Tooth went in search of a vocalist that would match their new vision. Having heard Gramm’s work with Black Sheep, members including Mick Jones invited him to New York City to audition. “Apparently, they auditioned over 30 vocalists and were still looking when I came down to Manhattan,” Gramm remembered. The tracks had already been recorded and Gramm actually sang

to the pre-recorded tracks. Later, “Mick asked me if I would consider staying around a couple days and trying to write with him so he could see how that went.” But that “went” on for almost a week. They got together with other members of the band… had more rehearsals… Eventually, just before yet another rehearsal, Gramm politely asked “Look, am I in?” The response was “Oh yeah, you’re in, didn’t you know that, you’re in!” So Gramm moved from Rochester to the New York area and started to practice and write songs at the regal sum of $125 a week. But the record deal certainly didn’t instantly drop into their laps. “When we had about seven songs written and rehearsed we started making calls and inviting A and R people from different labels to come and listen to us… we were turned down by every one of them.” Although the two people from Atlantic Records “passed” on the group, there was still some interest. “We more or less edited this, we made things a little more concise, a little more dynamic… and we we’re signed.” Sales were steady and momentum kept building and building beyond belief. But for a band that sold 80 million records, and counting, including monster hits such as “Hot Blooded,” “Feels Like the First Time,” “Juke Box Hero,” “Waiting For a Girl Like You” and many others, their first number one hit did not come until close to a decade after the release of the first LP. When “I Want To Know What Love Is” climbed to number one, Lou remembered “I was thrilled. A few years before that, the only songs that were number one were ballads, and we weren’t writing ballads to shoot for number one. We most always had a strong ballad on each of our albums and this one just happened to be strong at the right time, the right place. We had a couple number twos, a few threes. I think we had over 20 top 10 songs. One of the number two songs was kept off by (Olivia Newton John’s) ‘Let’s Get Physical.’” But eventually Gramm wanted to try solo projects. “I just released my second solo album. Mick was out of the country. He went on a cruise. I had song ideas and I just didn’t want to wait anymore.” There was a slot opening for Steve Miller who was going on the road, so Gramm eagerly accepted the opening slot. “We were about a third of the way into that tour and suddenly I hear that Mick comes home. I was informed by management to drop everything,

what I was doing, and come and work on new songs and get ready to go into the studio.” Gramm said that the answer was simple. “No can do. When the tour is over, I’ll be glad to get right down to work.” The rest is history as Jones and Foreigner found another singer. But personal stor m clouds were forming and Lou Gramm’s world was about to explode with a thousand shards of pain. “My operation was in March of ’97. We were just about to do a tour of Japan. About two weeks before we were set to do that, I started waking up early in the morning, woken up by a headache I never had before. It was so painful, it was debilitating…” Although it would ease up for part of the day, it always returned. A non-cancerous brain tumor was soon discovered. Gramm met with several doctors and there were several long pauses as Gramm recalled the various conversations and ultimately the one doctor that said the tumor was inoperable. “At that point, I assumed I had just been given a death sentence,” Gramm said ver y slowly and quietly. “In this frame of mind, I happened to be watching 20/20 one evening very shortly thereafter and saw a segment about Dr. Black.” He was a neurosurgeon based in Boston, a very knowledgeable surgeon about brain tumors. “At the end of the segment, they gave his office number. I was on the phone at 7:30 the next morning. I flew out the next day… at four o’clock in the morning the following day, I was being wheeled into surgery because there was no time to waste.” Although the operation was a success, Gramm remembered that “From 1997 to about 2003, my life was a living hell.” Motor skills were off, it was difficult to complete a thought or sentence, “I was finding that I would be exhausted at night, I would go to sleep and wake up the next morning feeling more tired than when I went to sleep.” He was in three auto accidents, including two head-on. “One with my twins in the car, when they were about three years old,” Gramm said. But three miracles as well, no one was seriously hurt and he turned in his license for a year. He was in a fog for years and continued to perform, even if he had to tape song lyrics to the floor. When he sang, he remembered hearing shouts from the crowd such as “‘Hey, you’re hitting the pasta a little hard, aren’t you Lou?’ and stuff like that. Really cold,

cutting remarks, like I let myself go,” he said. He had gone from about 140 lbs. to 280 lbs. but Lou was determined to come back in a positive way and dramatically reduced his weight. He’s embraced God, recorded new solo material, hit the road again and more. It seems his personal tenacity and determination is stronger than his most dramatic song. 2013 brings gifts that if scripted into a movie, would be hard to believe that they are all happening within several weeks. Within 30 days this spring, Lou Gramm will be inducted into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame, the Song Writers Hall of Fame and release his autobiography, Juke Box Hero. A mere 35 years after the release of Foreigner’s first album. So the final question is as simple as it gets. How does it feel? Again, another long pause before he answers. “That the things I’ve done with my life and career were meaningful to a lot of people. That the artistic side, which I always held in high esteem, is being appreciated, getting the attention that it deserves. I’m humbled by the awards.” There was a soothing tone of serenity in has voice and a look of contentment on his face. A world class musician such as Lou Gramm, and his fellow 2013 inductees, can only be inducted once and the event, based on the 2012 version, will certainly be a memorable one. Be there so you can joyously celebrate the evening and salute some of Rochester’s world class talent. Lambics, More Macho Than You Think by Mark Tichenor I’m writing this column from deep within the man box–you know, that nar rowly defined range of emotions and interests that shows the outside world that one is truly deser ving of being considered masculine. We’re talking things like grilling steak, grunting, and big bitter double IPA. Well it’s a load of crap. Especially when it comes to beer. Sometimes even us manly hemen can appreciate the art, complexity, and downright delishitude an excellent Belgian lambic affords. These wildfermented fruit-laced ales are some of the most unique on the planet, and, ber ries and all, among the most challenging beers to ever cross your uvula. Lambic beers break all the rules. Traditionally they ferment in big open vats, allowing the natural yeasts and bacteria of the Belgian microclimate to settle in and spontaneously ferment. The resulting beer is so throatpunchingly tart that it needs to be blended with older, mellower beer to make ‘gueuze’, before it’s

even potable, and commonly gets flavored with cherry (kriek) or strawberry (framboise) before going to market. Now you can be forgiven if the word ‘Framboise’ conjures up images of Audrey Hepburn goggles and tiny dog snouts poking out of Prada bags, because the framboise you’re most likely to find–brewed by Belgium’s Lindeman’s Brewery–is sweet and fizzy, more soda-pop than beer, with a frilly pink head and comically low ABV. This is a beer designed by marketers to capture the purses of young American urban women and nothing more. REAL Lambic bears about as much relationship to Lindemans Framboise as The Olive Garden’s breadsticks do to the cuisine of Tuscany. The twisty streets around the Gare du Midi in Brussels, Belgium are not tourist avenues. They’re tough and gritty, an immigrant neighborhood with a decidedly northAfrican f lair. Petty crime is rampant; crystals of auto glass lie in curbside piles and the nar row alleys echo with those funny European police sirens. It’s the last place you’d expect to find a farmhousestyle brewery, but Brasserie Cantillon never bothers to do what’s expected. Cantillon is a throwback, and the home of serious lambic. They go heavy on the unflavored Gueze. They make it the real way and they make it sour. In each sip, you taste the must and musk of the

farmhouse, and each swallow is tart enough to nearly close your throat. this is unquestionably a macho-ass beer, and the brewery is a mecca among beer tourists. Lindemans and Cantillon are the polar extremes of lambic, with many small brewers and blenders somewhere in between. One of the finest is only recently available in the Rochester area: the Kriek (cherry) from Brouwerij Boon in the original lambic town of Lembeek, Belgium. Boon Kriek is a masterpiece of complexity and balance. Nowhere near as sour as Cantillon‘s beers, with a soft, subtle sweetness, the one sensation a sip of boon provides is creamy. The lactic acidity meshes with the cherries to provide a pillowy, almost marshmallow essence. Heavier in body than most Kriek, Boon’s example is robust enough to pair with game meats (stay away from salty cured stuff), yet strikingly elegant as a nightcap or special occasion toast. The variety of lambic textures and flavors is all the more striking considering the tininess of the region where it is made. To this day, with the exception of Lindeman’s, the beers remain the sort of farmhouse products at which people in skinny jeans would toss the words ‘artisinal’ and ‘curated.’ To thoroughly experience lambics, you pretty much still have to go to Belgium. Fortunately, our beer stores and more enlightened pubs appreciate the place these fine beers have on the table, and, with a little determination, you can find a decent variety right here. With a beer style this special, the hunt is part of the fun, and lambic will provide an adequately sweet, or sour, reward. Oh, and never let anyone tell you your fruit beer isn’t manly. Written and directed by Brian Helgeland • Rated PG-13 By Ed Symkus It was not with much excitement or anticipation that I sat down to watch 42, the bio-pic about Jackie Robinson, second baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and the first black player to make it into the major leagues. I’m neither a big fan of usually over-reverential Hollywood bio-pic fare (my favorite remains The Music Lovers, the lurid and overwrought story of Peter Tchaikovsky), nor of sports movies that all seem to lead up to “the big game” (OK, there are a couple I’ve liked: Friday Night Lights and It Happens Every Spring). Which brings us to the sports bio-pic 42, a movie that, to my surprise, engrossed me, moved me, educated me, entertained me. The title, for those unfamiliar with the man and the story, refers to the number Robinson wore on his back

as a Dodger. After seeing the film, I did some research on Robinson, and found that there were enough exploits in his life, even before he was catapulted from the Negro leagues to the majors in the late-1940s, to provide ample fodder for another whole movie. But believe me, this one will do for now. As played by Chadwick Boseman, a busy background actor (lots of TV, and a part in The Express), here getting his first lead role, Robinson comes across as both uppity and laidback, as a hard-driving athlete and proud man, as someone who knows that he’s making history but in doing so must show a lot of restraint against the personal challenges thrown at him. Boseman is terrific in the part. He’s matched every step of the way in acting chops and character portrayal by Harrison Ford as Branch Rickey, the crusty, determined, business sav vy general manager of the Dodgers who got the idea to bring Robinson across the racial barrier. Packed into a fat suit to bulk him up to the real Rickey’s size, it’s Ford’s best perfor-

mance in years. But acting aside, perhaps the reason the film works so well is that aside from placing Robinson at the center, where he proves himself over and over on the field and at the plate, and showing him as a loving husband and a good man, the excellent script also keeps an eye on the people and events all around him. This isn’t just a biography; it’s an unflinching study of the times. Racism wasn’t thought of as a bad thing; it was an accepted way of life, at least in the world of baseball. Robinson had to keep his cool when dealing with foulmouthed, bad-tempered fans and other players, even some of his own teammates. One of the most difficult parts of the film to take is when Robinson becomes the target of vitriolic Ben Chapman (Alan Tudyk, who played the pilot in the great science-fiction TV series Firefly), the hateful manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, who hurls more N bombs at him than anyone uttered in Django Unchained. Yet writer-director Brian Helgeland, while rightfully keeping scenes like that uncomfortable, balances the movie out with people on the other side of the issue – other fans, other players, folks like Branch Rickey – getting their say, rooting for Robinson to make it. There’s even a sidelight of comic moments, courtesy of John C. McGinley as legendary announcer Red Barber, a man responsible for turning some of the most colorful phrases in broadcast booth history. This is not exactly a feel-good movie, as it covers some emotionally rough terrain. But it’s a class act all the way through, providing plenty to think about along with some great moments in baseball.
