Great No-Hype Beers For Summer by Mark Tichenor This week we’re going to get back to basics. There will be no talk of fancy collaboration brews, nary a mention of barrel aging, and a total absence of discussion relating to rare wonders of the beer kingdom. This is because I looked outside for a brief second and noticed it was nice out. Nicer than usual. Nice enough to sit on the porch with a brew that’s down-to-earth and delicious. While the beer press falls all over itself to laud Heady Topper and its artisan ilk, a bunch of good breweries are quietly releasing some excellent, unpretentious craft beers. Let’s Continued on pg. 22 >>>

22 FREETIME May 14 - May 28, 2014 talk about a couple of those. Victory Hop Ticket is the Downingtown, PA brewer’s latest take on session IPA, a recent style designed to deliver India pale ale’ s aromatic and alimentary punch, but without the accompanying hefty dose of alcohol. Hop Ticket succeeds admirably in this mission. Intriguing hop flavor and a huge hop nose provide a ton of the sensory pleasure, and the 4.5% abv clocks in at less booze than you’ll find in a can of Genesee. Perfect for a summer day, Hop Ticket takes the concept of a quenching “lawnmower beer” and adds complexity, body and elegance. It would also pair amazingly well with curry, chili, or anything involving Sriracha. If your tastes run in a more Belgian direction, Ithaca Brewing Company offers Ground Break, an elegantly crafted, yet unassuming take on the saison style. “Saison” means “Season” in French (I know, I have amazing linguistic skills) and, as folklore tells, this is the type of beer given to Belgium’s farmhands to nourish them as they gathered the harvest. Ground Break’s rustic character and distinctively spicy flavor notes nicely evoke the fields of Flanders (minus all the unexploded artillery shells), while maintaining a distinct, grassy, new American hop character. Ground Break pairs well with game meats, chicken, pork and and light sauces. Ithaca Ground Break and Victory Hop Ticket are all over Rochester right now, on draft at beer bars and cocktail haunts, so it’s easy to get your face into a pint. They’re also available at most of the constantly expanding number of beer retailers throughout the city. There will always be a place for the “innovative” beers, the rare, whimsical and powerful high-end limited-release brews that capture the hardcore beer lover’s imagination. However, creating something delicious and interesting within the tighter parameters that define the palate of the everyman is also a sort of innovation. If every poem were beatnik free verse, we’d lose the definition of poetry. Sometimes you need a good oldfashioned ode as well, if only as a reminder of why beer is so amazing in the first place. GODZILLA
Written by Max Borenstein; directed by Gareth Edwards With Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Juliette Binoche, Elizabeth Olsen, David Strathairn, Bryan Cranston • Rated PG-13 By Ed Symkus I’d been waiting a long time for this updated reinvention of the greatest monster the movies had ever produced. What I got was disappointment. The first Japanese one, Gojira, came out in 1954, and was a grim, straightforward horror film in which the monster was a metaphor for America dropping the bomb on Japan nine years earlier. I saw it when I was 7. But it wasn’t till many years later that I found out I had seen the “Americanized” version, in which Hollywood bought the rights to the Japanese film, inserted the American reporter played by a pre-Perry Mason Raymond Burr along with some new scenes, and dubbed it into English. Still a great film, but not as good as the first. Due to the original’s popularity back at home, there were to be a couple dozen more in a series that turned Godzilla from a villain into a protector and then back into a destructive monster again. The American reboot, in 1998, had good moments, but was slaughtered by critics and generally ignored by viewers. So here we are with another stab by Hollywood, and the resulting proof that some folks out there did not learn a lesson in ’98. Oh, there’s a big charcoal gray dinosaur-like creature knocking down buildings and going up against other big creatures that are knocking down buildings. In a direct nod to the original there’s a scientist named Dr. Serizawa, and there’s plenty of talk of atomic power gone awry. But Godzilla doesn’t even make an appearance in this film until the one-hour mark. Hold on. What, then, is that “massive terrestrial creature that has taken to the air” near the beginning of the film? It most likely came out of that giant egg shell that was found near an old, abandoned nuclear plant where “electromagnetic pulses are happening again, just like 15 years ago.” But the creature, of whom
•••••••••••••••••••••
we get a glimpse, is too sleek, and is like something of a mix between an insect and a dinosaur. Hey! That’s not Godzilla. That, it’s later revealed, is a Muto. No, there are two Mutos. They run around absorbing radioactive fuel, which makes them grow. And ... are they kissing? Are they going to spawn? Where the hell is Godzilla? Oh, he gets there, and he does battle with the big, nasty Mutos. But this long movie (it’s just over two hours, but feels like one of Kevin Costner’s ’90s films) has too much talk, too many side stories, and too much exposition before it gets down to the real nitty gritty. There’s an unnecessary intro at a nuclear reactor that introduces Dr. Serazawa (Ken Watanabe) as well as two mar ried scientists , Joe and Sandra Brod y ( B r ya n Cr a n ston and Juliette
Binoche), and features fossils, high radiation levels, and a great deal of panic. SPOILER ALERTONE THAT YOU REALLY SHOULD KNOW: Fans of Br yan Cranston and Juliette Binoche shouldn’t blink. Cut to 15 years later, say hello to our military hero Ford Brody (a disappointingly bland Aaron Taylor-Johnson), the son of those scientists, who has come home from war to his nurse wife Elle (Elizabeth Olsen). Then get ready for some convoluted stuff about the old supposedly irradiated nuke plant being rebuilt, and how some atomic tests in 1954 weren’t actually atomic tests, but something to do with killing a big creature, and (in another nod to Gojira) talk about a secret government project that wants to study the new creatures but not destroy them. Things finally do get around to Godzilla, who comes ashore preceded by a tsunami that puts kids and dogs in peril! There’s a report that he’s heading toward Las Vegas, but we only get to see the remnants of Sin City, accompanied by Elvis crooning “(You’re the) Devil in Disguise .” And there’s Dr. Serazawa insisting that “Godzilla is here to restore balance. He can defeat the Mutos.” Of course, Godzilla and the Muto couple finally go at it, and all kinds of real estate goes down during the fray. But it all comes much too la te in the film. The new Godzilla can move around at a pretty good clip, but the movie plods, like the old Godzilla.
