MUSIC REVIEW

Rochester International Jazz Festival...Pace Don’t Race Day One/Friday, June 20, 2014 By Scott Gudell As we all know by now, there are hundreds of shows and events that you can take in during the annual Jazz Festival. Add area clubs run by veterans (such as Abilene, Havana Moe’s and Temple Bar), enticing food stands, an eclectic street scene and more, and you could find yourself on sensory overload. Take it from one who has been to each and every festival since year one, that the best thing to do is take it a step at a time, and appreciate the events you’re able to attend. Don’t worry about the ones you might not get to. The vast majority of shows are rich, valuable experiences with very few misses, so you probably made a great choice. Check festival coverage in this issue, or visit Freetime.com for updates. Here are two shows from opening night 2014. •Roy Hargrove in concert – Harro East Ballroom He’s still in his mid 40’s but he’s got one foot in the traditional old world style of jazz trumpeters and one foot in the future. Roy Hargrove and his group - sax, piano, upright bass and drums - was one of the first acts to officially open the 2014 edition of the festival and played to a near sell-out crowd at the regal, acoustically rich Harro East. Dressed in a natty suit complimented by a lime green shirt and lime green laces on his sneakers (balanced by his dark shades and severe Mohawk), Roy Hargrove is a small, wiry spirit and is still a “young lion,â€? yet his playing also introduces hints of the “old catsâ€? as well. Playing both flugelhorn and a carbon-fiber trumpet, his sound and tone can be frisky and contemporary yet balanced by understated and pensive tones throughout. Whether he was blasting away at a creative solo or the band was intuitively working with him to weave together a cohesive, collective sound, Roy Hargrove and his group meshed nicely. He didn't talk much, except for the one time he stepped forward and sang a song which added a bit of variety to the set. Overall, the show was a smart combination of classic jazz with an eye to the future. Read a review of the Janelle Monae show online at freetime. com
