During his growin’ up years in Kentucky Vic began entertaining audiences at home and church. Spending much of his adult life as a professional speaker, speech coach and adjunct college professor, Vic has had audiences across the country on the edge of their seats laughing. As one audience member put it we were “wondering what he was going to say next.

Tom produces quick and quirky musical impersonations of Elvis, Elton, Springsteen and countless more. But it is off-key creativity that spawns his usual standing ovation. His Bruce recites the alphabet (to the tune of “Born In The U.S.A.â€?), his “Pinball Wizardâ€? is sung opera style.  You’ve seen him on America’s Funniest People and the Showtime Comedy Club Network. In addition, he has been profiled on radio’s All Things Considered. He has performed at the Tropicana Hotel and in more than 40 states.

DISC

Do You Wanna Play, Carl Carl Palmer (MDV Audio) By Scott Gudell Subtitled‚ Anthology‚ this is indeed a comprehensive, in-depth collection of drummer and composer Carl Palmer’s recorded work from his early days in the 1960’s, through his often classical music inspired work with the iconic Em-

erson, Lake and Palmer, to more recent Palmer creations. Since the vast majority of his work was with that seminal band, the majority of the first disc of this generous two disc set is devoted to ELP while the second disc is a grab bag of various pieces from the distant past to up-to-the-minute present. Being a good and true British citizen, Carl Palmer was one of millions of passionate music lovers who had little choice but to listen to classical music since that’s what the BBC force fed its listeners for decades. But innovative bands such as ELP, Yes, King Crimson, The Moody Blues

www.FREETIME.com •

and even The Beatles took that as a starting point and created amazingly innovative works. As a group, ELP always strived for pristine, crystal clear recordings (and live presentations), so disc one is dynamic and sparkles throughout. The trio created complex yet intricately constructed structures such as the incisive, The Enemy God Dances With The Black Spirits‚ (written by Prokofiev) and other pieces such as‚ “Toccata‚” (Ginastera,) and “Fanfare for the Common Man‚” (Copeland) as well as group originals. All instrumental, it’s up to the second disc to introduce some vocals. The second disc is literally a continuation of the history of British rock. There’s the frantic Who-like “Must Be Mad,” a song Palmer recorded with one of his first, and short lived, groups, Craig. That’s followed by an early progressive rock song by his next group, Atomic Rooster, complete with a swelling organ and aggressive drums. Those are followed by a song Palmer recorded with Mike Oldfield and then a trio of songs by the mighty Asia‚ “Heat of the Moment,” “Wildest Dreams‚” and “Time Again,” which collectively confirm the grand, majestic approach they took to music. A few songs with the group 3, a pair of solo credited songs and a final improv piece in which a young fan named Carl Palmer sits in with legendary jazz drummer Buddy Rich and the collection comes to an end. Editors Note: Rochester has a rare opportunity to see Carl Palmer play in a club setting as he’s scheduled to perform at Water Street Music Hall on Saturday, July 12.
