Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad

Highland Park Festival Site | July 11 Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad released their new album, In These Times, on April 10, 2012. This is the first electric studio album from GPGDS since 2006’s Slow Down. Over the past six years, the quintet has performed 800 shows, put out a collection of live albums, and released a roots Americana record titled Country (January 2012). In These Times consists of 12 tracks that showcase Giant Panda’s psychedelic reggae sound.

Riverside Festival Site | July 12 Indie rockers Young the Giant are the reincarnation of the band, The Jakes, who enjoyed several years of popularity from 2004 thru 2009, performing with Kings of Leon and receiving a great deal of airplay. As Young the Giant, the group has released a self-titled album on Roundrunner Records which features the songs “My Body,â€? “Cough Syrup,â€? and “Apartment.â€? Their melodic rock ‘n’ roll sound features vocalist Sameer Gadhia; Jacob Tiley on lead guitar; Eric Cannata (guitar/vocals); Payam Doostzadeh (bass); and Francois Comtois (drums/vocals)‌ Nashville’s Apache Relay joins the bill in support of their new one, American Nomad. Various Locations | July 12 - 21 For more than a week, Nazareth College hosts their annual Dace Festival, featuring performances by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Rochester’s own Grammy Award-winning conductor, Jeff Tyzik; along with appearances by guest dancers from the West Coast, performances by iconic dance companies, master classes, workshops, outdoor events, and more. Look for appearances by the following… •Beth Gill - Winner of two “Bessie” Awards in 2011, Ms. Gill was recently named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” for 2012. Water St. Music Hall | July 13 The “King of Surf Guitar,” Dick Dale met Leo Fender (Fender Guitars) and began playing the Fender Stratocaster electric guitar early in his career...upside down and backwards! Dale continues to play left-handed, upside down; using the “Fender Tank Reverb” (which he developed) to provide his trademark sound. The first guitarist to perfor m on the Ed Sullivan Show (1963), and the first to be featured in a double page s p re ad i n L i f e Magazine (1963), Dale was named the “Forefather of Rock and Roll” by T hirt y Years of Rock and Roll (1986) and “Guitarist of the Year” by Guitar Player Magazine (1981). Nominated for a Grammy Award for music in the movie Back to the Beach (1988), he received a platinum record for the song, “Miserlou,” which appeared in the movie Pulp Fiction. Dale has been inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame and the Hollywood Rock Walk of Fame, and has been awarded the “Guitar Player Legend” medallion. CMAC | July 14 Formed some 35 years ago, the B-52s are new wave/pop rock icons. Regulars on the 70s/80s club scene, songs such as “Rock Lobster,” “Planet Claire” and “Private Idaho” made the B-52’s an unexpected commercial and critical success. After the death of guitarist Ricky Wilson, the band took a brief hiatus before bouncing back in 1989 with the album Cosmic Thing featuring “Love Shack,” “Roam” and “Deadbeat Club.” Later studio releases include Good Stuff and Funplex; with a live one, With the Wild Crowd, following in 2011…Brit-

Eastman House Exhibits The George Eastman House at 900 East Avenue has a new exhibition on view thru October 21. Ideas in Things offers a gallery of photographs that demonstrate their persistence as cultural artifacts and as a vehicle for memory and meaning. Written by Shane Salerno, Don Winslow, and Oliver Stone; directed by Oliver Stone Universal Pictures Rated R By Ed Symkus Here’s a big welcome back to the directing chair for Oliver Stone, who hasn’t made – for me – a really satisfying film since Any Given Sunday, back in 1999. Maybe it’s the subject matter this time, or the actors, or the combination of uncomfortable nastiness and some very dark humor. Savages is a contemporar y story, set in California, centering on the marijuana trade. Its two heroes (wait, maybe they’re antiheroes) are Ben and Chon (Aaron Johnson and Taylor Kitsch), who are longtime pals but have polar

opposites when it comes to personalities. Ben is a laidback, modern-day hippie who also happens to be a hell of a pot grower. Chon is hottempered and dangerous, and is said to have lost his soul during a couple of military tours in Iraq. But they’re friends and they’re in business together. They also both happen to love, or at least sleep with, the same woman, who goes

Opening July 13 Ice Age: Continental Drift Another one in an animated series that’s getting harder and harder (for adults) to sit through. So, back again are Manny, Diego, and Sid (voices of Ray Romano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo), finding themselves afloat on an iceberg, meeting up with pirates (Pirates???) on the high seas. It should be lots of fun for the kids, though. Your Sister’s Sister Director Lynn Shelton often fills her films with too many words, uttered by actors who aren’t too concerned with pronunciation. This one’s a dramatic comedy about a death in the family, the ensuing gathering of friends and other family members, and the occasion of Jack (Mark Duplass) meeting up with and getting to know Hannah (Rosemarie DeWitt). Early reports say that people either love or loathe the ending, pretty much in equal measure.

Opening July 20 Beasts of the Southern Wild First-time writer-director and Queens native Benh Zeitlin gives

us one of this year’s darlings of Sundance. It’s all about the environment going wrong, a strong father-daughter relationship, a search for a lost mother, life in the South’s Delta region and, oh yeah, prehistoric creatures called aurochs that are unleashed on us. The Dark Knight Rises After taking a Batman break to write and direct Inception, Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale once again team, this time in a story of the Caped Crusader being thought of as an enemy of Gotham City, but still having to defend the place from powerful and evil Bane (Tom Hardy). Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, and Michael Caine are back as Lucius Fox, Jim Gordon, and Alfred. Anne Hathaway makes her first appearance as Catwoman. Take This Waltz The second film from actorturned-director Sarah Polley takes a serious look at big-time problems in a “happy-enough” marriage between Margot and Lou (Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen) when Margot meets Daniel (Luke Kirby). Complications ensue, especially when Daniel discovers he lives across the street from them. Rogen is said to be terrific in a dramatic role.

by the name of O (Blake Lively), and serves as the film’s narrator. It’s O who, offscreen, gives us the backgrounds of Ben and Chon, but reveals little of herself. It’s also O who introduces us to and warns us about Lado (Benicio Del Toro), a very bad guy who serves as a strong arm for a very bad drug organization known as the Baja Cartel, and to the even scarier Elena (Salma Hayek), who runs the cartel. This is actually a business story. The once successful Baja Cartel is seeing some bad times due to the horrors running rampant through the Mexican pot industry. It’s Elena’s decision to latch onto the two Americans’ business, learn how they manage to grow and sell the best stuff around, then squeeze them out. But, as we’ve all come to believe from the real-life news headlines that make it up north, ever ything revolves around threats of bloodshed. There’s plenty of that in the movie, right from the opening fames – an unner ving, jittery sequence made up of a bunch of scared-looking people and the sound on a chainsaw. Bad things are about to happen,

but we’re not sure what. Before long, though, Ben and Chon and O know. They’re sent a video of that scene, and its outcome, and are told that a certain group of Mexican businessmen would like to meet with them. There are fairly clean-cut lines drawn as far as which characters are good and which are not. But there’s also Dennis (John Travolta), a drug enforcement cop who’s taking money from Ben and Chon and in return let’s them do what they do. Is he good or bad? It’ll take you till the end of the film to decide, if you can even then. Stone has always been good about creating intense moods, then sometimes letting things boil over, even explode. His fascinating but flawed Natural Born Killers took that to the extreme. He sure doesn’t hold back here. The intensity button that he regularly pushes often makes watching the film almost unbearable. Yet, as the plot gets complicated with deals and deceptions, and treachery is found to be lurking around every corner, you can’t take your eyes off of the screen, or keep your mouth from hanging open. Everyone seems to be watching and/ or listening to everybody else, on both sides. And things go beyond intense, reaching into areas of violence, bloodiness, viciousness. Backed up, you’ll recall, by that dark humor. The best performance belongs to Aaron Johnson (Ben) who, for the third time in a row, totally fooled me. Meaning that I didn’t even know he was in Savages till the end credits, after seeing him as the young John Lennon in Nowhere Boy, then not recognizing him when he played the lead in Kick-Ass, or in his supporting role as a cad in Albert Nobbs. The coolest part about his Ben in this one is that while watching the character develop, you wonder, worryingly, if he, too, like Chon, will lose his soul.
