20 FREETIME July 23 - August 6, 2014

beer CRAFT

The Best of The Fests by Mark Tichenor Beer festival season is in full swing, and this means different things to different people. Some ( and hopefully you, dear reader, fall into this group) attend beer events to learn about different styles, and get a feel for the innovative ways that the nation’s breweries approach their craft. Others go to get obliterated on whatever is dumped in their shatterproof plastic glass. Now, I’m not making a value judgment here, except that it might be more appropriate to outfit the latter group with a red Solo cup instead of a commemorative tasting snifter. In truth, far more events cater to that latter group rather than those who truly respect beer, so it kinda depends on what you’re looking for. The point, really, is to help beer lovers choose the best events at which to spend their hard-earned money. So how do you separate a true beer event from a mobile happy hour? By paying attention to a few key points beforehand. Do your homework. It isn’t particularly difficult to determine the nation’s top beer festivals. The obvious ones, like the Great American Beer Festival, are practically household names these days. A quick search of Beeradvocate.com will turn up true gems like Brewery Ommegang’s annual “Belgium Comes to Cooperstown” fest, or indeed Beer Advocate’s own line of amazing, thoughtfully executed events. Scrutinize the vendor lists. Are the brewers bringing their special one-offs and seasonals, or merely their best-selling flagship brands? Dumping two kegs of something apricot-flavored into the maw of any plaid-shorted yokel who comes along is different from demonstrating breadth, range, and passion for brewing. Joe McBane, organizer of Rochester’s annual Real Beer Expo, stipulates that each brewer MUST bring something outside of their

principal product line in order to participate. The result? One of the most intriguing and engaging beer events in all of Western New York. For that matter, make sure brewers are actually allowed to attend and exhibit at the festival. There’s big money to be made off your entrance fees, and cynical ‘marketing companies’ have begun holding festivals that are nothing more than partnerships with large distributors, thus locking out the brewers altogether, denying them their prime chance to meet face-to-face with their customers and share passion and ideas. The only purpose of a brewerless festival is to separate you from your wallet more egregiously than even the most expensive craft beer pub ever could. Be willing to travel. The finest beer events may be hundreds of miles away from your home, but what better reason to squander those vacation days? Find your beer mecca, get a hotel, and use the festivals as linchpins for amazing vacations and experiences. It’s about so much more than the sampling; it’s about meeting (and quaffing with) the brewery staff after event hours. It’s about getting that extra time to try the brews you were unable to fit into your glass. It’s about treating craft beer as what it truly is: a part of culture and a sublime component of good living. Really, with the right mindset, any event can be a blast, but why pay high admission fees only to sample two ounces of the same stuff you have at the bar each week? There is still plenty of adventure to be found in the craft beer scene, and the true goal of most brewers who attend these fests is to proudly guide you through their piece of it. A great craft beer festival is more than a fun afternoon; it is a reminder of why you, and your friends, and all these nutty people who hump big sacks of barley into steaming kettles all day, got into this business in the first place. Mark owns a laptop and likes beer. For more on beer, check out the beercraft blog, updated regularly, at beercraft.wordpress.com. Find him on Twitter @beercraft. A MOST WANTED MAN

Written by Andrew Bovell; directed by Anton Corbijn With Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe, Robin Wright Rated R By Ed Symkus Though it made some money a few years ago, the feature film adaptation of John le Car rés Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy left a large number of viewers scratching their heads. The stellar cast, led by Gary Oldman as George Smiley, was excellent, but the convoluted plot and the slow-asmolasses pacing made the film harder to understand than the already over-complex book. The film’s entertainment value took a drubbing because it was too difficult to follow. Well, that’s what often happens with le Carré’s work, both on paper and onscreen. Thank goodness that’s not the case in A Most Wanted Man, a still sometimes confusing but absolutely crackling adaptation of his 2008 novel about changes in the world of spying after 9/11. This is a slow-moving film that has no explosions, one good foot chase, and a lot of people saying a lot of words. Set in Hamburg, it’s a look inside an operation run by chainsmoking Gunther Bachmann (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a man who confides only to those he can trust that he heads “an anti-terror unit that most people don’t know about.” It’s a small outfit, with the dedicated Gunther assisted by his loyal right-hand-woman Erna (Nina Hoss) and a handful of equally dedicated agents and informants.

•••••••••••••••••••••

He’s first seen on the trail of Dr. Abdullah, a Muslim author who might be funneling money to terrorist organizations, even as he calls for peace at his lectures. Gunther isn’t alone in this, although he’d like to be. There’s also interest in Abdullah from the German police and from the CIA. But because this is le Carré territory, and le Carré likes density in his work, we soon meet, or at least catch a glimpse of, a mysterious, scrawny, bearded, hoodie-wearing fellow named Issa (Grigoriy Dobrygin), who has just arrived in Hamburg, is a known Jihadist, and might be there to cause trouble. Either that or, as Issa tells Annabell Richter (Rachel McAdams), the self-appointed do-gooder lawyer who goes around assisting “stateless people,” he’s there because he can’t go back to Russia, where he was tortured. But is she really a lawyer? Or is she, as the usually calm but suddenly irate Gunther describes her, a “social worker for terrorists?”

But there’s no sitting back and wondering about who these people are or what they do; more and more of them keep getting introduced. There’s by-the-books Hamburg bank manager Tommy Brue (Willem Dafoe), among whose safety deposit boxes is one containing a boatload of Euros under the name of Issa’s father, a known terrorist and murder. There’s also CIA agent Martha Sullivan (Robin Wright), visiting from the States and checking in on Gunther, Issa, and Dr. Abdullah. This is a film filled with people following other people, while different people eavesdrop on different people. There’s a lack of trust between Germans and other Germans, and between Americans and Germans, and everyone’s set on finding out who is or isn’t a terrorist. As the story increases in complications, anyone could easily be made anyone else’s pawn. Traps are set, evasions are made, tensions soar. Although the script eventually reveals more about the background of Issa than any other character, the most fascinating person in the film is Gunther, mar velously played by the late Hoffman as an honorable man who is at once quiet but fierce, weary and frustrated, someone who’s tormented by what seems to be a shady past. This is not only a far more accessible film than Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, it’s a lot more entertaining, especially when the supposed “good guys” calmly explain that they do what they do “to make the world a safer place,” no matter how much they have to betray or deceive practically everyone around them.
