CRAFT

Shandy, Shandy Shandy, I Can’t Let You Go by Mark Tichenor So, a couple weeks ago I ponied up to have my broken air conditioning system fixed. My first thought was to save the money and just go without for the short summer, but I’m glad I went with the fix, because it has been absolutely brutal outside. It’s like breathing hot plastic wrap, and I swear one of my Converse All-Stars partially melted to the pavement. When it’s that hot, even beer is hard-pressed to provide actual refreshment. You’re losing pints of water through profuse perspiration anyway, so adding a diuretic like alcohol isn’t doing yourself a favor. Fortunately, though purists go fetal at the very thought, you can make your beer lighter in alcohol and more refreshing by turning it into a shandy. A shandy, or ‘Radler’ as our German friends call it, is nothing more than beer mixed with lemon-lime soda, ginger ale, or (ideally) sparkling lemonade. I know, it sounds disgusting. And sometimes it is disgusting, but it’s very popular in Europe, and not at all hard to make, or have your bartender make, a mix that combines the best of both worlds. If you’re going to do this, use a light lager that’s more on the malty side. . Munich style Helles beers like Spaten work well, as does Hefeweizen. This is also a great occasion to get rid of all that big box beer your cheapo friends bring to your par ties. Avoid strongly hopped beers because hop flavor clashes with citrusy soft drinks and it’ll taste like hell. Make your proportions 50-50, and adjust from there. The shandy should still look pretty much like beer, but lighter in color. You could always buy some of the premixed, commercially available shandies that are sort of faddishly hitting the market, but you really shouldn’t because making your own is so dang easy and the prepackaged stuff tastes like a household cleaning product. Ultimately, shandy is the least snobbish expression of beer

enjoyment, it’s taking the summation of brewer’s skill, farmer’s labor and maltster’s art, and then dumping soda into it. This in its own right makes shandy fun to drink, if only for the opportunity to thumb one’s nose at beer snobs. Still, even the most highbrow Imperial Stout lover would agree, when it’s so torrid out that your sneakers melt to the pavement, a tall, cold, sweaty glass of shandy is a fantastic way to deal with the heat.

DISC

The Mighty High and Dry (self-released CD) By Scott Gudell If you sift through the ashes of the band Street Level, Alan Murphy’s mid-2000’s band, you’ll find a few musical hints of yesterday showing up here and there on his brand new outing with Rochester rockers, The Mighty High and Dry. There are still hints of the driving R and B and funk that bubbled to the surface on that disc from a few years back, but for the most part, this is a new chapter…a new book.

The new project draws its inspiration from classic rock bands such as the Stones and Neil Young, and updates everything with shards of the Black Keys, as well as a few well chosen ripples of Americana through the lens of groups such as The Doors. It’s a confident disc that keeps things moving forward from “Shine,” the opening track to, well, “Shine,” a reprise of the opener at the end of the disc. The next few songs strut Motown, blues, and straight ahead rock, while maintaining a churning, aggressive sound. Of the 14 original songs, there are a few standouts. including “Shine,” an infectious, upbeat cut; “Trust Me Brother,” with its nod to Richie Havens, and “War is It,” an aggressive in-your-face blast of rock. From its salute to such classic acts as Steely Dan and Graham Parker (“You Ain’t Ready”), to its gut bucket blues (“Snake”), the collection succeeds overall. Once you realize that there’s consistency as well as variety, you’ll find yourself wondering what the next track will reveal. Grab a copy and find out. It’s a fun ride! Editor’s Note: The Mighty High and Dry is gearing up for performances celebrating the release of their new disc in August. You can catch one of the upcoming shows at Abilene Bar & Lounge, 153 Liberty Pole Way, on August 2.

SCREEN

RED 2 Written by Jon Hoeber and Eric Hoeber; directed by Dean Parisot With Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, Helen Mirren, Anthony Hopkins Rated PG-13 By Ed Symkus This cracking good sequel to the 2010 action comedy about former government agents who are now “RED,” or “retired, extremely dangerous” does exactly what a film like this is supposed to do. It picks up, at some indeterminate time after the original, and follows the continuing adventures of a group of people we really liked the first time around. They’re pushed off into a new story, but the script switches into comfort mode by getting them to do some of the same quirky things they did before. Yet there’s enough freshness here to make us hope there’ll be a third entry somewhere down the road.

Just like the first one, this manages to be equal parts cute and violent, right from the get-go. Say hello, again, to tough-as-nails Frank and innocent little Sarah (Bruce Willis and Mary-Louise Parker), now a lovey-dovey couple who have become real homebodies. Well, at least he has. Frank is thrilled to have his killing days behind him. But Sarah might be missing some of that excitement she tasted when she first met Frank. Before the film has a chance of turning saccharine, it reintroduces Mar vin (John Malkovich), Frank’s crazy coot of an old pal, who is a brilliant marksman but is still feeling the effects of some long-ago and extensive government-sponsored LSD experiments done to him. Cue the explosions, cue the gunfire, then introduce a plot that makes the government look even worse when our heroes are labeled terrorists who must be hunted down. But don’t let the audience forget, even when gun-crazy Brit MI6 agent Victoria (Helen Mirren) and treacherous Korean hitman Han (Byung-hun Lee, new to the franchise) are hired to do the

hunting, that throughout it all, Frank and Sarah are crazy over each other. This is put to the test a bit when Katja (Catherine Zeta-Jones), a Russian agent and old flame of Frank’s, enters the picture. But that character, along with Zeta-Jones’ flat acting, takes up too much air and space in what would otherwise have been a tighter movie. The film is actually a little more complicated than it needs to be. The central premise involves a decades-old weapon that at one time could have done major damage to the world and, it turns out, still can. Dubbed Project Nightshade, and created by a genius who was either good or evil, the weapon has gone missing, and a whole lot of people, from all different corners of the planet, are searching for it. In a film of this sort, that kind of plotting also means that everyone is trying to kill everyone else, with Frank, Sarah, and Mar vin most often in others’ crosshairs. But the script never strays far from leaning on its comic edge.

Despite the danger, there are plenty of wisecracks, along with some outright loopy comedy from the often confused-looking Mar vin. While he remains the film’s major comic relief, Parker is spot-on in lightening things up just by displaying her misplaced excitement and zeal when, for instance, she gets her hands on a gun and doesn’t really know what to do with it. Any fashionistas in the audience will enjoy the fact that practically everyone in the film (with the exception of Mar vin) is stylishly dressed, and fans of actors who know how to overdo things in exactly the right way will enjoy the spirited, highly energetic performance by Anthony Hopkins as Bailey (especially when he utters the oh-so-British phrase “Jolly good” twice!). There are plot twists galore, many of which get very creative late in the film, and though the story gets overcomplicated, the direction is so fluid, it’s quite easy to take it all in. Yeah, I’m ready for Red 3.
