Mikkel Borg Bjergsø has come very far, very fast. In 2006 he, along with his partner Kristian Klarup Keller, set out to change the taste of Danish beer, taking their inspiration from the American craft beers of the West Coast. Today their company, Mikkeller, makes some of the world’s most sought after (and pricey) beers. Not bad for a brewer that doesn’t actually have a brewery. Bjergsø is the leader of a trend: the gypsy brewer. Instead of establishing physical brewing facilities of their own, they make beer at other breweries, using their fame and reputation to sell the beer and lend prestige to their hosts. Pretty Things Brewing follows the same model, brewing along the east coast, and churning out daring, highly desirable beers. So does Stillwater Brewing, from Maryland. All of these brewers prove through sales that their business model makes sense. The big advantage is flexibility. Gypsy brewers are not limited, creatively, by their equipment. If Bjergsø has a beer in mind, he can find the brewery with the appropriate facilities to make it happen. That’s not a luxury enjoyed by ‘Brick and Mortar’ breweries, or by brewing companies who contract brew through them. Lower operating costs also help the bottom line. Lower costs mean a fatter bottom line. The cost savings of having basically zero brewing equipment or buildings to pay for lets these gypsy brewers follow their vision in a way most breweries can’t; they have no need to pump out beers for mass market sales to cover expenses. Instead they can focus on fanciful, sometimes fantastic, occasionally ghastly specialty beers. Being a wandering brewer, how-

www.FREETIME.com •

ever, has some inherent limitations. When you’re brewing batchby-batch, brewery-to-brewery, it’s hard to expand your business. Also, there is a real dependence on the strength of the craft brewing scene creating and supporting the brewer’s ‘rock star’ status. Should the beer scene taper off, sales would inevitably follow, and sales are all these brewers have. There’s also the hype factor. While wandering breweries put out tangible product, it tends to be hyper-expensive. Currently An 11 ounce glass of dark, smoky Mikkeller Black Hole goes for $11.50 at The Old Toad, on the same tap line as many excellent $5 beers. Some would say it’s only because of scarcity and faddish hype that the distributor would have the chutzpah to charge that much. For now, however, brewing at-large seems to have its place in our diverse and vibrant beer culture. Really, it’s difficult to find fault with brewers that aren’t afraid to follow their dreams, to whichever brewery they might actually take them. In Other Beers The f irst Rochester Real Beer Week was an unquestionable success, with wholehearted buy-in from stores, bars and restaurants across the county, as well as from breweries and distributors nationwide. Over the course of the week, Rochesterians had access to beers that normally come nowhere near this part of the country. It was a taste of what you might find in Philadelphia or Boston. This is important; it goes beyond enjoying a special occasion. For one week, little, out-of-the-way Rochester, New York had the eye of the best breweries, and it could be a factor when these breweries decide what markets to enter in the future. Rochester Real Beer Week, now to be an annual event, makes a difference and we’re lucky to have it. Mark owns a laptop and likes beer. SCREEN

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

the sky, where we meet the arch criminal Bane (Tom Hardy); are told of the relative peace that’s found its way to Gotham City since Har vey Dent removed the criminal element from the streets; and are then brought up to speed on the Batman-Bruce Wayne situation.

he’s also a rabble-rousing speechmaker. And he talks of reducing Gotham to ashes. Due to the violence that’s visited upon the city, shown in furious action sequences with lots of bullets, and explosions that resemble a sort of ballet, Bruce is convinced that the evil that was

Batman vanished eight years ago, and now a bruised and battered Bruce, grasping a cane, hobbles around Wayne Manor, hiding out from the public like Howard Hughes, refusing to go out or let anyone but his trusted butler Alfred (Michael Caine) in. Nolan’s Gotham City is an odd place. It sure looks like New York ... no, wait, it looks like Pittsburgh ... no ... it looks like a lot of places, with some familiar landmarks, along with buildings that just don’t exist. But there’s an interesting reality brought to the whole affair when the script adds in a contemporary political edge – a question of what happens to one-percenters such as Bruce Wayne when they start having money problems. But first, meet Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) who, for the record, is never referred to as Catwoman, but is, indeed, a cat burglar (who looks really good in tight black leather). The character wants something from Bruce Wayne. The actress manages to be sly and funny and down-to-earth and very convincing in her fight scenes, some of which are done in high stilettos. Then it’s time to learn more about Bane – a large, powerful, intelligent, evil mercenary, whose face is mostly covered by a much scarier mask than the one Batman wears. He’s not just malevolent,

once buried is rising again. It’s time to get back in shape and put on the Bat suit. As often happens in comic book-based movies, we also get a science fiction element. This one concerns a fusion project that’s supposed to create free energy for Gotham. But things, as they will, go very wrong. In an understated reference to Batman Begins, in which Batman says to Sgt. Gordon, “A storm is coming,” Selina Kyle nuzzles up to Bruce Wayne in this one and says, “A storm is coming.” Another reference involves the theft of those pearls from the first film. There are also a few character cameos from the earlier entries, some portrayed by the same actors, some only shown in photos. But there’s no mention of the late Heath Ledger’s Joker. Nolan recently addressed that in an interview, saying, “I decided that that would be inappropriate. I felt that someone who was a friend and a colleague had suffered a terrible tragedy, and to try and reduce that to a plot point in a fictional universe felt wrong to me.” Nolan is a class act, and he’s made a great, epic film, a terrific conclusion to the trilogy. Yes, it’s long, clocking in at 2 hours, 45 minutes. But it absolutely flies by. I’ve already seen it twice, and am planning another return trip, big and loud, in IMAX, where it belongs.

Written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan; directed by Christopher Nolan Warner Bros. Pictures Rated PG-13 By Ed Symkus How important is it to have seen Batman Begins and The Dark Knight before checking out what Christopher Nolan has done to cap off his trilogy? I won’t say that it’s essential, but if you’re familiar with those two films, there’s no doubt that you’ll enjoy the superb new one – easily the best of the series – on many more levels than viewers who aren’t. For those of you who haven’t seen them and won’t get to them in time, know these SPOILERS: In Batman Begins, young Bruce Wayne sees his parents murdered by a gunman who tries to take his mom’s pearls. The first person to offer comfort to the distraught lad is Sgt. Gordon (Gary Oldman). In The Dark Knight, good guy District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) goes insane, turns bad, and is killed. Batman takes the fall for the person who really did it. Both are vastly entertaining, expertly crafted films from a man who has a cinematic vision as well as the wherewithal to pull it off. I have only two minor complaints about them. The first suffers from a couple too many bad guys doing too much badness. The “problem” with the sequel is confounding. Heath Ledger gave such a terrific performance as the maniacal Joker, he stole away from everything else in the film. The first one ended with a kind of slightly comic cliff hanger. The second ended with a feeling of doom and gloom. The Dark Knight Rises ends, not only on a note of complete satisfaction, but also one of pure exhilaration. It’s a conclusion that comes swooshing off the screen in a half-hour blast of adrenaline that’s made up of constant furious action and revelation upon revelation about certain characters. But first it concerns itself with a boatload of storytelling. Picking up eight years after the last one ended, we’re initially bombarded by a wild, James Bondian opening sequence way up in

By Tom Cannon & Ed Symkus

Opening July 27 Step Up Revolution Down in Miami, boy (Ryan Guzman), who runs a flash mob dance team, meets girl (Kathryn McCormick), who wants to be a dancer. But his career, as well as those of the dancers in his troupe, are headed for trouble when a wealthy businessman comes to town to redevelop the neighborhood. Oops, that businessman is her dad. What’s a girl to do? Take This Waltz The second film from actor-turned-director Sarah Polley takes a serious look at big-time problems in a “happy-enough” marriage between Margot and Lou (Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen) when Margot meets Daniel (Luke Kirby). Complications ensue, especially when Daniel discovers he lives across the street from them. Rogen is said to be terrific in a dramatic role. The Watch SNL director Akiva Schaffer is promoted to feature films with

Take This Waltz this sci-fi comedy about some suburban guys who get together once a week, but not for bowling or poker. Nope, they’re doing neighborhood watch duty. At least

Total Recall that’s what they tell their families. And they actually do end up trying to protect their streets – from other-worldly creatures disguised as humans. With Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, and Jonah Hill.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days Zachary Gordon, Devon Bostick, and Rober t Capron are back as Greg, his brother Rodrick, and his pal Rowl e y, i n t h e third offering from the series of Wimpy Kid books by Jeff Kinney. This is actually based on two of the books: The Last Straw and Dog Days, and introduces viewers to the family’s dog Sweetie. Total Recall After cutting his directing teeth on a couple of pretty good Underworld films, then proving with Live Free or Die Hard that he could make a really cool action movie, Len Wiseman got the assignment for this sort of remake of the Ahnold scifi film that was based on Philip K. Dick’s We Can Remember It For You Wholesale. Colin Farrell is now the guy who goes on a mind vacation, where, watch out, everything that can go wrong goes wrong.
