Soon, mayhem ensues as each tries to hide their infidelities from the other. DISC

by Scott Gudell

El Rancho Azul Dale Watson (Red House Records)

He’s a time tested, out-of-thepast, cur rent-day lover of his kids and his mom, Texas and the good old USA, whiskey and beer, barbeque joints and dance halls and more...but not necessarily in that order. Dale Watson has been swingin’ and swaying with conviction for a few decades now as he creates spot-on originals with a tip of the hat to hard core countr y vets such as Merle Haggard, George Jones and others. With El Rancho Azul, his latest collection of songs, he keeps on rollin’. Although his music is firmly rooted in the rowdy bars of Texas and his record label calls it “fullon honky tonk.” Watson knows how to shake things up a bit. Sure, if it’s a song about drinking, you can feel the hang over. But if it’s a tender song about giving away his daughter on her wedding day, you can taste the salt in his tears. If it’s a rousing bar ballad, you

can feel the tension building. Add in a waltz or two, and Watson’s latest is a great addition to his catalogue. Dale Watson and the Lonestars are the good guys. They ride into town, crank out an honest to goodness smokin’ show and move on down the road to the next town. In the meantime, we’ve got El Rancho Azul to keep us company.

an Irish ballad before it eventually rises and inspires. The album can be a bit too laid back at times such as in “Sweet Love,” but the heartfelt vocals and incisive lyrics that pervade the bulk of the songs eventually carry the day.

Don’t Call No Ambulance Selwyn Birchwood (Alligator Records)

Angels Jeanne Jolly

(The Foreign Exchange Music) As her quiet, pensive voice begins to fill the room, it’s immediately evident that Jeanne Jolly’s true musical roots lie on the softer side of Americana. She’s a classicall y trained vocalist, but the bulk of Angels is grounded in the folk and country sounds she consistently has been exposed to in her native North Carolina. The opening song, “Angels on Hayworth Street” is delicate and comforting. The lyrics are open to personal interpretation, but it’s a sort of “coming home to rest” song that offers sanctuary, regardless of the type of journey you’ve been on. Later, on “All is Not Lost,” she tenderly offers words of support, followed by “Round and Round Again‚” that calls on detailed memories from her childhood. Another stand out work, “The Kiss,” faintly echoes

OK, in the world of blues, you’re not supposed to have experienced all that much pain and misery when you’re still in your twenties. You’re not supposed to sing and wail with conviction unless, well, you’ve been convicted. With Selwyn Birchwood, you can brush those notions aside. Sure, he knows how to laugh, smile and get frisky, but he also knows how to knowingly describe some bitter exper iences in minute detail and does a fine job with both on his debut CD. “Addicted” (not what you think but definitely a good blues song title) opens the disc with lightning bolt guitar riffs, and quickly segues into the boogie beat of the title cut. But one thing this kid knows is that the blues doesn’t have to only settle into a bass/drum/ guitar rut. Birchwood and company get into the groove by judiciously adding snarling sax, clarinet and flute

to several of the tracks, courtesy of Regi Oliver. Oliver helps the vicious, prowling “Walking in the Lions Den” and the fierce, focused “Queen of Hearts” flare up and catch fire. It’s R and B circa 1955 at its best. Birchwood himself sings and slings the guitar and even has a few go-rounds on lap steel as he draws from the deep well of musical mentors including Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix and even Tom Waits. And, as with Hendrix, Birchwood is confident enough to launch into an extended song such as “Brown Paper Bag” which clocks in at just under ten minutes. The CD wraps with “Hoodoo Stew” and echoes fallen slide guitar masters such as Johnny Winter and nearly forgotten Rory Gallagher. But don’t let the inf luences fool yo u , t h i s is Selw yn Birchwood signed, sealed and d e l i ve re d by Selwyn B i r c h w o o d . Consistently up front and powerful. With a handful of awards to help remind you that he’s already earning well deserved accolades, Birchwood seems poised to confidently take his place among the upper echelon of blues players. Long live the kid. Editor’s Note: Selwyn Birchwood returns to Abilene Bar & Lounge, Monday, August 25.

BOYHOOD

Written and directed by Richard Linklater With Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke, Lorelei Linklater Rated R By Ed Symkus I see a lot of movies. And it’s not very often I get to report that one pleases me, surprises me, moves me, and keeps me absolutely riveted. But that was the case with Boyhood. Having not read a word about it in advance or even seen a trailer, I had no clue that the premise of the film was based on a “gimmick” that writer-director Richard Linklater had planned from the start: to tell the fictional story of a Texas family by shooting little pieces of it for a few days each year over a period of 12 years. It wasn’t till about a quarter of the way in that I realized what was going on. There I was, completely ensconced in the tale of a woman (Patricia Arquette) whose slacker-dreamer husband (Ethan Hawke) had abandoned her and her two kids, Mason and Samantha (newcomer Ellar Coltrane, and the director’s daughter Lorelei Linklater). Then it hit me that every time the story jumped forward, there were the same actors, also having jumped forward, year by year. This wasn’t any makeup trick. This was the real thing. I thought, “This is amazing! Can the director and cast keep this up?” Yes, they could, and did, with flying colors. It’s the kind of ambitious idea that till now has been relegated to the documentary genre. But even though this film looks and feels like real life, it’s – with some improvisation added in during the rehearsal process – completely scripted and acted. Yeah, people have been mentioning similarities with the Harry Potter movies, and following those kids from being tykes to teens, but this is a whole other class of filmmaking. It’s, as the title suggests, a history of Mason growing up, along with everyone around him growing up, growing older, maturing and changing, both physically and

•••••••••••••••••••••

emotionally. There’s no one big event here, but there are plenty of small big ones, eventually forming into the arc of Mason entering grade school and finishing high school. The film runs across the emotional spectrum from happy to heartbreaking, slowing down to let viewers know just where these people are in their lives and what they’re doing, then adding in an extra layer of reality and a sense of time passing by peppering the script with actual events – a casual mention of the war in Iraq, a visit to a late-night book release party for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Oh, that Harry!), people putting up Obama-Biden signs. But Linklater keeps bringing it back to the ever-changing family. It’s fun to see the sweet, young

23

Mason getting into little bickering matches with his older sister, and there will be knowing nods from viewers that are parents when they see how their mom tries to keep peace in the household. But Linklater isn’t afraid to take uncomfortable risks, and doesn’t f linch about presenting ugly abuse in the romantic relationships that mom needs to have in her life. He also shows the struggles the kids’ estranged dad goes through, knowing that he’s been an irresponsible, bad father, but hoping, sometimes naively, to make things better. Time in the film zooms by. Situations go from good to bad to worse to much better. There are boyfriends and girlfriends and marriages and separations and flights to safety. An odd contrast and comparison is that as the two kids mature, so does dad. Yet it’s probably mom who goes through the most changes – enduring a constant struggle, somehow making things work out, always on the alert for the next challenge in her life. The focus is on Mason, and Ellar Coltrane is an absolute wonder to watch, whether he’s a 7-year-old staring at clouds in the sky, or a 15-year old, starting to wonder about the meaning of life. But the toughest part belongs to Arquette, who turns in one of the finest, most nuanced performances of her career. Yet every single actor in this small, big-hearted film is terrific and comes across as completely natural. In my mind, Linklater could easily and successfully have gone on for another year or two, but his cut-off point here works very well. Best of all, he manages to reward viewers by ending it a l l on an upbeat note.
