Eddie J. “Son” House was the blues personified. The degree of his obscurity, contrasted with the lasting and far-reaching effect of his musical influence, is probably unequaled by any other artist in any art form. It just so happened that the “locals” he was content to play for included two teenagers, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson, who would carry his musical style to future generations worldwide. Blues radio program host Richard Shade Gardner was intrigued by Son House’s lifelong fight with personal demons through cotton fields, churches, pulpits, prison, juke joints, and working for the New York Central Railroad in Rochester, New York. In 1981, he finally caught up with the legendary octogenarian in Detroit.

August 19 - September 2, 2015 FREETIME
VIEW
Idina Menzel A conversation about her music and her scheduled upcoming Rochester area appearance By Scott Gudell Setting her sights on performing at a very young age, singer/ actress Idina Menzel has certainly flourished, beginning with her mid-1990's appearance in the cutting edge Broadway smash, Rent. By the early 2000’s, she was back on Broadway with her name topping the marquee as the green witch of an equally iconic musical, Wicked. A decade later, she conquered the music charts with songs from Disney’s new classic film, Frozen, which, of course, included the inter national hit “ Let it Go.” Since the film was animated, her contribution was made via a recording studio, which certainly must a have a bit less demanding than the grueling 8 performances a week of Broadway. But then in 2014, it was back to hitting the stage day in and day out in the Broadway production of If/Then. So Ms. Menzel has proven herself a woman with a strong work ethic. Although the American portion of her 2015 summer tour is averaging about five shows a week, it still takes incredible determination, stamina and focus to sustain the required energy level, similar to any successful Broadway run. Ms. Menzel is scheduled to appear in the Rochester area toward the end of the tour on Sunday August 30 at CMAC in Canandaigua. We had a chance to talk with her, joining in on a tele-conference in mid-May that included reporters representing domestic newspapers and magazines as well as one or two from overseas. With about a dozen different writers politely taking turns, Ms. Menzel answered a number of questions during the forty-five minute conversation. “I’ve never done this before,” Ms . Menzel conf ided as the free-for-all started. “The thing that I’m most proud of in the past with all my touring is my ability to give a very intimate perfor mance and for people to really get to know me when they leave the venue.” She then acknowledged that it’s a greater
challenge now. The venues are bigger and she’s bigger, in great part thanks to her high profile songs featured in Frozen. “Although ‘Let it Go’ is my only quote un-quote hit song, hit radio song in my career, I’ve noticed that I could consider other songs such as ‘Defying Gravity’ (from Wicked) and songs from Rent to be my other hit songs because my barometer on that is if I can put my microphone out and the audience can sing every word than that’s my hit song. So I make sure that I include those songs that people really want to hear.” “I really feel that there’s a common denominator and that is me. Whether I’m in green makeup as a witch or just standing there in my jeans and bare feet singing my songs, as an artist, I still have to take a risk and make

myself really vulnerable in front of a live audience. And allow myself to be seen. She added that “it’s still the soul of who I am that’s behind it all and connects it all.” With over 40 domestic and overseas shows planned for the summer and early fall of 2015, Ms. Menzel ref lected on her numerous past theatre performances and how they helped her prepare for a concert schedule which essentially focuses the spotlight on her from start to finish. “People in the theatre are like athletes. We have to train and stretch and build up our endurance ,” she confidentl y stated, certain that she’ll have both the sustained energy and interest during her tour. When a writer from the United Kingdom asked whether Ms. Menzel was planning any elabo-

rate costume changes, she reminisced about seeing Diana Ross in concert when she was a girl, and confided that she doesn’t like leaving the stage. “ I don’t want to lose the momentum so I never leave during the performance.” But she hinted that the audience should watch for a dress that may have several looks and variations. When my turn for a question came ‘round, I mentioned the fact that her local appearance was toward the end of the tour and rather facetiously asked if she should save her voice. She confidently stated “By then I’m stronger than ever. As long as you stay healthy, knock on wood. By then, I can sing for days.” I then went on to ask her how it all started. How did she and Taye Diggs, her ex-husband who was raised in Rochester and attended the School of the Arts, prepare for life in the world of entertainment? “We both had very supportive parents that believed that we were truly talented and that we should both go for our dreams. I think we had great teachers. I always say that when I look back at my younger self I had more courage or belief in who I was back then. I just knew that I was going to do something special with my life and that people were going to know who I was because of my singing and my acting. As you get older, it almost gets harder… maybe you’re more aware of the world and the things people say about you. It can be more paralyzing than when you’re a young kid and you just believe. I try to harness that younger self of mine sometimes and remember that she wouldn’t have taken ‘no’ for an answer and she just knew she was good at what she did.” So you can be sure Ms. Menzel will bring experience and energy to her show. Looking at some of the songs from the tour, you can probably expect to hear “Defying Gravity,” “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” (made famous by Barbra Streisand), “River” (Joni Mitchell), a song or two from Rent, probably an a capella selection and then everything coming in for a landing with “Let it Go,” plus an encore or two. So get ready for a classic one-two punch of soaring songs and intimate revelations from a dynamic, confident performer, Ms. Idina Menzel. Editor’s Note: Idina Menzel performs at CMAC in Canandaigua, Sunday, August 30.
