beer CRAFT
Autumn Is The Season For Beer Lovers by Mark Tichenor Autumn is Western New York’s finest season. The heat grows less stifling by the day, and area residents haven’t yet succumbed to the soul-shredding despair that rolls in with the dreaded winter. The foliage explodes in color, and even our food changes in character to suit the season. It’s also the best season in which to be a beer lover. It all starts with Oktoberf es t . Sure, the real Oktoberfest is in Munich but, ever y September, countless regional fests spring up around the world in homage to the big party. And the sweeter, stronger German Okoberfest beer has inspired a style all its own, which you can find countrywide in locations where beer is appreciated The Irondequoit Oktoberfest, the largest in the area, is taking place on September 18 and 19 at Camp Eastman, under the big tent. This is your chance to buy that leather shorts ensemble you’ve been eyeing. Not only is the beer imported from Germany, so are the musicians. Hope you appreciate a good yodel! Billed as “the fastest growing Oktoberfest in Wester n New York,” the Fairport Oktoberfest happens October 2 and 3 at the Fairport Junction festival site, on Lift Bridge Lane, in the heart of bustling downtown Fairport. It’s located next to Mulconry’s Irish Pub Right now, area beer Mecca The Tap and Mallet is celebrating Oktoberfest in its own way with a German menu from Swan Market and several Oktoberfest beers on
September 16 - September 30, 2015 FREETIME draft. With a rotating lineup of 30 taps, you’ll get a broad range of these delicious russet lagers from both domestic and German breweries. Speaking of domestic breweries, there’s lots going on at Rochester favorite the Rohrbach Brewing Company, who are leading off the fall with their own take on the now-ubiquitous pumpkin ale, as well as an earthy harvest ale which is probably the closest thing you could get to a comfort beer on a cool Autumn day. It’s also the season for CB Craft Brewers’ Autumn Festival of Ales, a much-loved annual happening that has grown into a destination event over the years, attracting several thousand people. It takes place on October 10 in Honeoye Falls. If you’re going on a fall foliage tour through the Finger Lakes, you can begin with a stop at the VB Brewing Company in Victor NY, then pause in Canandaigua for a tasting flight at Naked Dove. The Dove’s finest seasonals come out in the fall, including the Oktoberfest and their eagerly-awaited Hopulus Localus Harvest ale, wethopped with local hops from Pederson Farms, a mere 8 miles away from the brewery. There’s plenty more. Fall is apple cider season and you’d be hardpressed (ha!) to find a better region for hard cider than ours anywhere in the nation. There are more breweries than can fit into this one brief column, and more on the way. We could also talk about the popularity of area pumpkin beers, even though the enjoyment of a pumpkin beer is a serious character flaw that should at minimum be punished with a civil fine, and possibly a short but difficult-to forget detainment in an unmarked facility. But you’re only human and it would be irresponsible to attempt to persuade you to cram any more alcohol into your system. At any rate, you don’t need the help of a magazine column to do that; you’ll manage just fine on your own. So break out that flannel, lace up those hiking boots, and settle in to enjoy autumn beers in the region where autumn shines the brightest. The season doesn’t last very long and...wait...are those... snowflakes?
