32 FREETIME September 17 - Ocotber 1, 2014

The Films of Fall (and Beyond)

By Ed Symkus

Recent circumstances have put me in the enviable position of having been able to catch screenings of a bunch of upcoming features films well before their release dates. The phenomenon is called the Toronto International Film Festival, where I watched movie after movie (after movie). Some will be in theaters in the coming weeks, some will take months to hit the screens, some will never be heard from again. Along with a couple of non-festival films that I caught early on, I thought this would be a good place to preview what will and might be heading your way. They’re in alphabetical order.

Big Game

Action-packed and kinda silly, this has Samuel L. Jackson playing the POTUS, who, f lying in Air Force One to a conference in Finland, is shot down by terrorists. Wouldn’t you know it? A 13-year-old Finnish kid, hunting alone in that wilderness to pass a traditional coming-of-age test, finds and attempts to rescue the Prez as the bad guys close in. Pure popcorn delight.

The Boxtrolls

All Is by My Side

Stop motion animation is still cool, in this Dickensian-like tale of a young boy who lives underground with the title characters, but pops up into the British streets where he meets a curious young girl, a bunch of wealthy wankers who dote on smelly

All Is by My Side

Andre Benjamin aka Andre 3000 dons a fright wig, plays guitar upside down, and becomes Jimi Hendrix in this dramatic interpretation of Jimi’s early days, when he was still struggling for recognition. It focuses on his time in London, where former Animals member Chas Chandler discovered him. Don’t listen for

The Equalizer (or something like it) guy played by Denzel Washington. Action, violence, vicious bad guys, and a strong reteaming of Denzel and director Antoine Fuqua, who last worked together on Training Day.

Hector and the Search for Happiness

Simon Pegg is the psychiatrist named Hector who just can’t grasp the concept of happiness or why his patients want it so

The Box Trolls cheeses, and some ver y bad guys with dastardly plans. Based on the book “Here Be Monsters,” from which it veers in a big way.

The Equalizer

Remember the’80s T V show about the former British intelligence agent who now is content to help regular folks right the wrongs in their lives? That agent is portrayed here as a mild-mannered retired black ops

The Judge badly. He sets out on a far-f lung journey to figure it out, meeting up with everything from his target emotion to some really awful situations. A charming movie with some tough edges.

The Judge

Love & Mercy any Hendrix hits; this all takes place before those happened, when he was still playing other people’s music. Written and directed by John Ridley, who wrote 12 Years a Slave. Hector and The Search For Happiness

Whiplash title. The lawyer must return home after a death in the family. Let the dysfunction begin. Great story, terrific acting, but it goes on a bit too long.

Kill the Messenger

The true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative jour nalist Gar y Webb, who broke the story of the CIA-crack cocaine scandal in the mid-1990s, then paid dearly for it by feeling the wrath of our government as well as other journalists who tried to prove him a fraud. A stunning performance by Jeremy Renner in the lead.

Men, Women & Children

creepy but fascinating look at the underbelly of contemporary nighttime L.A.

The Theory of Everything

The brilliant Stephen Hawking (played by Eddie Redmayne) was still in college when people took notice of his intellectual capacities and when he contracted Lou Gehrig’s Disease, which landed him in a wheelchair, and took away control of his body and his voice. But it didn’t prevent him from marrying his sweetheart (Felicity Jones) and becoming a father and writing groundbreaking books on physics.

Director Jason Reitman bounces back from the misfire of Labor Day with this complex ensemble piece that shows all sor ts of rela tionships: some between high school kids, some between those kids’ parents, some between the parents and their kids. It also explores the highs and lows and inherent dangers of today’s social media and how those damn gadgets and devices are making all of us less human. Mr. Turner

In America, our view of the Germans is a dichotomy. We either see them as jolly, beer-swilliing partiers in leather shorts, or as efficient, humorless automatons with penchants for being on time and taking over Europe. For the sake of this column, we’ll deal almost exclusively with the former stereotype rather than the latter. The reason we’ve come to know the Germans as such a fun-loving culture is because of the Bavarian Oktoberfest, held every autumn in the city of Munich, and pretty much acknowledged by everybody, except for those Burning Man weirdos, as the world’s greatest party. With over 6.5 million attendees every year, it’s also overwhelmingly the biggest. Oktoberfest has its own style of beer, imaginatively called “Oktoberfest.” It’s a darker, malty lager, slightly stronger than Munich Helles, that’s traditionally brewed in the springtime, while it’s still cold enough for the yeast to work it’s magic. A good Oktoberfest beer is sweet and slightly nutty, with almost no discernable hop bitterness and a “rye bread” character that varies in prominence from brewer to brewer. It should be substantial enough to have a thicker mouthfeel, yet light enough to not fill the drinker up after just one measly liter. You’ll be SHOCKED to learn that it pairs well with sausages and smoked or roasted meats, like the famous Haxen (roast pork knuckles) of Munich. It may also pair well with green vegetables, but there are no documented cases of this ever occurring At the big Fest, only the big six breweries of Munich are allowed to serve their versions. Each brewery sponsors a comically large tent holding upwards of 6000 drinkers, most of whom choose to consume their Festbier by the liter in those famous big glass steins. Plenty of beer gets consumed in American versions of the festival as well, although they are less overwhelming in both scale and level of debauchery. Similarly, American Fests aren’t limited in

the beers they can serve, and it quickly becomes evident that the Oktoberfest style has a firm grip on our consciousness as a seasonal special here in the USA. The Boston Beer Company makes Sam Adams Oktoberfest, which has the advantages of being: A: Popular, B: very good, if not quite on par with the Bavarian stuff, and C: on tap at whatever airport you’re stranded in. Locally,The Naked Dove Brewery is the most faithful replicator of the Style; their Oktoberfest should be on tap around Rochester and the Finger Lakes just as this is going to print. So, this September, why not have fun like a German? Pull on your tight leather shorts and suspenders, join some friends at a communal table and swing your liter of Oktoberfest beer wildly to and fro. It’s a good way to remind yourself that even the most businesslike of cultures can still teach us a thing or two about having fun. In other beers: •A big welcome b a c k to one of the more respected b r e we r ies in the Northeast! Allagash Brewing, of Portland, Maine is returning to the Finger Lakes Region after a multiyear absence during which they had their hands full supplying all those parched Wall Street tycoons in New York City. •Known for their homages to Belgian brewing tradition, Allagash makes an excellent witbier, and their Curieux bourbon barrel-aged Tripel is world-class. The return of our friends from Down East is bound to pump new life, and new choices, into the Rochester beer scene. Mark owns a laptop and likes beer.
