FURY
Written and directed by David Ayer With Brad Pitt, Logan Lerman, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Bernthal, Michael PeÒa Rated R By Ed Symkus The last time we saw Brad Pitt in a WWII film, Inglourious Basterds, he played Lt. Aldo Raine, and he was killing Nazis, or having them killed, with a smile. In the WWII film Fury he plays Sgt. Don Collier, and he’s killing Nazis, or having them killed, with grim determination. In the film’s opening moments, as a German officer astride a white horse slowly makes his way across the smoke-filled devastated landscape where a battle had recently taken place, Sgt. Collier – let’s just call him Sarge – silently leaps from the top of a disabled tank, and stabs him repeatedly, making sure to get him right in the eye. It’s established right away that writer-director David Ayer (End of Watch) isn’t going to be holding back in the “war is hell” department. Yet even with a plentiful supply of grisly sequences involving bullets and shells and bombs, Fury is not merely an onslaught of physical horror. The story, or what little there is of one, puts us in intimate contact with five members of 3rd Platoon, an American tank outfit that was fighting out the last days of WWII smack in the middle of Germany. It’s a study of the four soldiers – Collier, Swan (Shia LaBeouf), Travis (Jon Bernthal), and Garcia (Michael Peóa) – who have been sharing the cramped quarters of their Tiger I tank, nicknamed Fury, for three years – sometimes cracking jokes, sometimes getting on each other’s nerves – and now have a new recruit, the very green and ver y frightened Nor man Ellison (Logan Lerman) who’s replacing a dead soldier. There’s no back story about them aside from the fact that these guys have been in combat together for a long time. However, there’s also an unexplained look at the horribly scarred back of Sarge, as well as the oft-repeated, nervously delivered statement from Norman that he’s only a clerk typist, and has no idea how he got into this situation, and desperately wants out.
www.FREETIME.com •
But this is about the reality of a brutal war, in which there were no outs. The tank, usually along with other tanks, is sent on a mission. It could be to take over a town. It could be to rescue some soldiers. Then it’s sent on another mission and then the next one. Ayer’s cameras spend a lot of time inside the tank, with the men moving as fast as their space will allow, loading guns, firing them, going after other tanks, blowing up buildings where Nazis are hiding and/or firing from. Ayer and his cinematographer Roman Vasyanov (who shot End of Watch) also regularly look around at the awful beauty of the ruined countryside, some of which is littered with bodies and equipment, some of which has lines of constantly walking German civilians who have lost their homes and have nowhere to go. The images they capture of an intense battle between American tanks and German tanks that are hiding behind a tree line, armed with anti-tank guns, is absolutely searing. But the film keeps getting back to the men inside those heavily armored vehicles. Sarge is an enigma. He keeps a straight face in front of his men, and is almost stoically silent unless he’s shouting out orders of which way the tank should turn and when the guns should be fired. He’s both respected and feared by his crew, and has a reputation among senior officers that he knows what he’s doing. He can be calm and collected when trying to get Norman into fighting shape (“Do what I tell you and you’ll make it through this.”), but he’s wont to slap him, kick him, and scream at him if he shies away after being ordered to shoot a Nazi prisoner (“Do your job!”). It’s a magnificent, wide-ranging performance from Pitt, and a fascinating one by Lerman (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) as he morphs from a wide-eyed and shaking innocent to a hardened soldier, with no acting clichés accompanying the transformation. The film builds up to a mission that accidentally sends Sarge and his men into a situation of “Butch Cassidy”-like impossible odds, putting the five of them up against a battalion of Germans, resulting in an unrelenting nighttime battle that will force viewers to jump in their seats, then leave them in something akin to a state of shellshocked solace. Among the many films in the WWII genre, this is a great one.
